The Doom of Mokhaiotl (also called Mokha, Mocha, "the delve boss") is an endgame boss encounter added with Varlamore: The Final Dawn. Gnomonkey was highly anticipatory before release, became critical of its planned rewards in early 2025, and after launch (July 2025) rated the fights themselves highly while criticising its loot scaling, drop table and bugs.
Overview
The update blog (January 2025) described an Inferno-level difficulty encounter similar to the Colosseum, unlocked by a new quest1. Each time the boss is defeated it descends deeper into its burrow, and chasing it increases the chance of unique drops, with some uniques only appearing at more dangerous levels2. Progress must be made in a single run, since returning to the surface resets the player to delve level one3. The hardest difficulty can be repeated for as long as the player survives, but dying loses everything, a risk-reward system like the Colosseum4. The blog aimed it at players at or above combat level 120 who have or are close to getting an Infernal cape4. Banking between caves is not allowed5.
Deeper delves increase the boss's attack rate, shorten reaction times and leave lingering arena state from previous levels; after level five the environment adds avoidable damaging effects, plus further mechanics and special attacks6. Gnomonkey was pleased that the blog mentioned no max hit, defence or HP increases, calling the scaling pure skill expression, unlike the stat scaling of Tombs of Amascut7.
Delve structure: pre-release expectation and release
- In January 2025 Gnomonkey described eight caves with a boss fight in each, after which the player can keep repeating, with harder, more mechanically interesting content and more loot8. He expected the cave 8 clear to be about Cerberus difficulty, because he said the boss draws on the RuneScape 3 bosses Telos and Arch-Glacor, with the real difficulty coming from going far beyond cave 89.
- In February 2025 he said a moderator had stated that delve 8 is the final delve and that it can be repeated without further increase in difficulty10, and that Jagex had said it would not scale past Delve level 8, making his earlier picture of an infinite-scaling, Telos-style boss inaccurate11.
- At release the boss has eight delves, each harder, faster and with more mechanics, some appearing only on certain delves12. It gains 25 health each delve until delve 8, then loses 50 health, which he says makes delve 9 a little easier than delve 813. Delves above 8 are still pushed very deep: he reports reaching cave 2314 and a delve 31 run off-stream15.
Stats
- Close to 500 health, resetting to a little over 500 in each of the eight caves16; defence resets between phases17.
- 90 defence (drainable to 60 at most; a Ralos special attack drains 27 per hit splat)18 and 160 ranged defence19.
- 300 defence against stab and slash despite being a demon, so melee specs, claws and burning claws are poor; it is weak to crush, making the Elder maul a decent spec2021.
- Melee is not feasible at launch because the boss melees through prayer very hard, so he uses ranged; he left open that it could turn out like Yama22.
- Running caves 1 through 8 is roughly a 10-minute fight23.
Mechanics
Detailed mechanics have their own pages: acid, car attack, grubs, holy water, melee punish, rock block method, shield phase, slam and stalagmite orb and the orb phase.
- Basic attacks: a slow mage star and a ranged projectile, both bright and obvious, dealing no chip damage through the correct protection prayer24.
- Boulders: the boss occasionally shoots a boulder, dark greenish-brown for a following ranged attack or blue for a mage attack. Rubble drops on the player's location, so the player must leave the shadows; the colour gives the prayer for the attack right after it lands2526. The colour matters most by cave 825. On cave 1 there are no special mechanics and attacks are slow26.
- Delve 4 and above: boulder attacks come in sets of three, one tick apart (for example mage, range, mage), and the first hit landing is the cue to pray27. He advises not to greed melee grubs under the boss when a boulder attack lines up, since missed boulder prayers are guaranteed hits that ignore defence and are the main way to die there28. Attack order is fixed: mage, ranged, mage after a blue boulder or ranged, mage, ranged after a dark green one, even on cave 8, so muscle memory can be built29. Melee attacks can appear after the first cave29.
- Cave 7: mage, ranged, mage attacks come very fast, requiring quick prayer clicks30.
- Cave 8: two boulders are thrown, then six attacks in a row, starting with mage if blue (mage, ranged, mage, mage, ranged, mage) or the opposite if dark green31. The sequence can hit for over 60 each if prayers are missed, and a tag with Emberlight must also be landed during it or a 99 damage hit is taken32. Prayers are disabled twice rather than once, so they must be re-enabled a second time33. He compares it to a double Manticore and an extremely high APM part of the fight34, and calls delve 8 by far the biggest difficulty jump, with six continuous ticks of prayer switching35. He pushes the boss to a corner so rocks give cover from the slam, and warns that tanking five slams in the orb phase while the six-attack sequence comes is extremely hard36.
- Shield phase: the boss should not be stood next to except during the shield phase, the only time it does not melee37. If it is not dead after the orb phase another shield phase is needed, costing about a minute38.
- Rock block: after the first rubble lands, step to a tile without a shadow and click back onto a shadowed tile, avoiding all rubble39. The boss never sends the second set of rubble onto where rubble just landed40. Gnomonkey says using the rails and dodging rubble is the biggest factor for very deep delves41. A Jagex hotfix later made the boss destroy only the centre rock, which he praised42.
Strategy and gear
- Gnomonkey says not to come without double Death Charge and to do Yama first, since spec damage is a large part of the damage43. Death Charge can also be triggered from the boss's corpse each cave44, and from a shield phase with grubs17.
- He opens every cave with a Zaryte crossbow spec, then shoots with the Twisted bow and tags with demonbane45; after the shield phase he opens with another spec as the boss turns into a car, which can do about 90 damage optimally17.
- Gear is hard to plan because the melee punish and car phases are 100% accurate and the melee punish also has bonus damage43. Gearscape has the gear, boss stats, 100% accuracy and melee punish calculations46. Top delvers bring SGS, AGS2, Eldritch staff and blowpipe specs and swap between Masori and Void47.
- A budget setup is covered at Ironman Budget Doom Delve Setup and gear and inventory. Gnomonkey says it stays solid to roughly delve 20, and that delve 12 is reachable4849. Deep delves can be done with a Scorching bow and void without a Twisted bow, though harder50.
- Players who cannot clear cave 8 can reach about cave 4 for loot; the boots have dropped as early as cave 351. Caves 6 and 8 ramp difficulty massively, and to make money without clearing them he suggests going through caves 4 to 6 a few times5253.
- Delve 5 is the first really hard delve, comparable to Colosseum wave 654.
Rewards and loot
Rewards
- The third reward blog (January 2025) listed new BIS boots, a slightly better BIS mage necklace and a demonbane crush weapon similar to Emberlight; common loot did not scale with delve level, only rares, and there was no currency55. Jagex announced it would not move forward with the thrall upgrade and instead work on a self-contained in-fight reward56, and that the Eldritch veil would drop guaranteed at delve 8, with the demonic mark and any attachment to the god capes removed57.
- On 2025-02-06 Jagex held off polling the rewards, saying it would redesign them into two new items and a rework of another, all tradable, focused on commonly felt gaps with a particular focus on magic58. See Poll: Mokha rewards, Opinion: Mokha reward design and Update: Doom of Mokhaiotl rewards.
- At release the rewards include a wand slightly weaker than the Shadow with a special attack, new tribrid boots and Confliction gauntlets, which increase accuracy after a miss59. Gauntlets drop from delve 2, the Eye of Ayak from delve 3 and the Avernic treads from delve 460. Gnomonkey later said the rewards ended up decent after Jagex iterated over many blogs61; see also Mokha boots.
- The pet is twice as common as each rare drop, so about two pets are expected before about three rares; he has four, and as far as he knows nobody has received a pet and an item in the same roll6263. Jagex scrapped a planned tradable skip token reward; he was glad, since returning to later caves after dying is part of the difficulty64.
Loot scaling
- Loot has a quantity multiplier: delve 1 half loot, delve 2 about one third less, delve 3 the base loot shown on the OSRS Wiki, rising to 1.2 times the delve 3 loot at delve 965. Quantities round down, so drops that roll under five give the same quantity on delve 3 and delve 9; only cannonballs, Onyx bolts, Dragon dart tips and Aether catalysts increase meaningfully6667. On delves 1 and 2 loot rounds up when it would round to zero68.
- Common loot pool values: delve 3 about 44k, delve 9 about 57k, a 13k increase he calls laughable; Grotesque Guardians pays about 11k more per kill than that69. Delve 9 rare loot is about 800k, about 15 times the common loot70. By delve 125 there is a 50% chance of a rare drop71.
- Gnomonkey called the scaling dumb, copied from Tombs of Amascut, and said delve 3 gives more common loot per hour than delve 9 and beyond7268. He would lower early multipliers and scale up faster, around double or 2.5 times the delve 3 loot at delve 973. He argues uniques should all start at delve 5 or 674, and that drops before completing content are a trend he is sick of75.
- Completion numbers cited: about 16 million delve 1 and 15.3 million delve 2 clears, with 1.5 to 2 million fewer per higher level76; 85% of clears are delve 6 and lower77. See also Update: Sunfire splinters removed from Doom of Mokhaiotl and Sunfire splinter.
Profit
| Date | Claim |
|---|---|
| 2025-07-23 | Boots worth about 1.6 billion gp; he bought his for 1.2 billion; "incredibly good money"7879 |
| 2025-08-09 | Budget setup about 70m for a main; about 30m gp/hr on delves 1 to 8, best money-maker at the time; he expected it to fall over about a month; nearer 50m gp/hr at delve 9+ with about 50% more rare drops8048 |
| 2025-08-22 | Getting close to Theatre of Blood as boot value dropped; Jacko's delve 134 loot about 13 million gp for 3.5 hours versus 14.3 million expected from Vorkath in the same time70 |
Records and milestones
- 2025-07-23: Gnomonkey claims the world's first Delve 8 clear, achieved on his first try on stream8182; he describes it as taking about two and a half hours of constant dying while learning82.
- 2025-07-31: Rock block tech takes him to cave 2314.
- 2025-08-22: A 31-delve run off-stream15.
Bugs and exploits
See Bugs and hotfixes (Doom of Mokhaiotl) and Bug abuse.
- Release was described as having minimal bugs other than the boss itself83. By October 2025 he said unfixed bugs remained, including a shield-phase kill that still lets damage hit the player and a logout freeze that can kill Hardcore Ironmen84. In March 2026 he listed launch bugs: a cave-progression bug, holy water triggering only on the first hit splat, leeches spawning melee grubs in the orb phase, and boulder projectiles lining up for guaranteed damage858687.
- In May 2026 he said that stalling about 10 minutes on the shield phase insta-killed the boss with a massive hit splat; it could have given a delve record around 80 to 90 when the record was about 30 to 408889. A trick of hitting grubs or leeches to reset cooldown allows a three-tick Twisted bow attack; Jagex decided to leave it as emergent gameplay9091.
Gnomonkey's opinion
- Pre-release (January 2025): the most hyped he had been for an update, perhaps ever92; he called an endless kill-streak loot system with only rare drops scaling "the perfect approach"2. After the reward blog he said the changes would gut the boss, with no profit or reason to return and a prediction that it would be dead on release9394. He argued the lack of a currency such as Colosseum splinters would make it dead content95, and that it should be a high-level update for good players with early caves for mid-level players96. He asked Jagex not to rush it97. On 2025-02-06 he called the design process poorly handled but was glad Jagex was asking for help98.
- After release (July-August 2025): very fun, definitely endgame, and way better than Yama in fun and difficulty83; arguably tougher than the Colosseum99. He thinks the clear time and rare grind are fair100, but that it has the Tombs of Amascut effect, on the cusp of the best content in the game but held back by fixable flaws101.
- Combat Achievements: he doubts they can be interesting102. After their September 2025 release he said the Delve 16 achievement and Grub Patrol and perfection achievements are fine, but a one-handed melee-only achievement is too restrictive103104. See Combat Achievements.
- October 2025: he says the encounter had many problems and still does, that the loot table and the way delving works are a mess, and that it was called an enraged boss before release but is not105106. He says an extra month before release would have made it much better107 and that the drop table still has major flaws Jagex has not fixed108.
