The Twisted bow is a Chambers of Xeric ranged weapon with a relatively low 70 ranged attack bonus, +4 prayer bonus and +20 ranged strength. It cost about 1.3 billion gp in 20201, and Gnomonkey notes that people liquidate their whole bank to buy one and rebuild afterwards3. Its value comes from its scaling: damage and accuracy rise with the target's magic level24. Gnomonkey considers it best in slot for a long list of bosses3 and the most important item for Challenge Mode Chambers5. He also says that levelling stats to max gets a player a free Twisted bow's worth of damage6.

He got his own Twisted bow from the Chambers of Xeric on his hardcore ironman in a duo raid at 115 kill count, which he considers his first Twisted bow7. It let him skip the Bofa grind, with no Confliction gauntlets required8. Hedron was 60 kill count dry at the raid and gave him all her RNG for the drop8. He did not even have a Xeric's talisman to put it on, and viewers joked that sending a raid with his wife may have been the key9.

Mechanics

The bow's damage scales with the enemy's magic level, capped at level 250 in the main game or 350 inside the Chambers of Xeric. This gives up to a 140% accuracy boost and 215% damage boost outside raids, or up to 248% damage inside2. The max hit and accuracy therefore rise with the opponent's magic level, with a higher cap in Chambers4.

Consequences he lists: * It is useless on things with low magic level4. * It has weird damage breakpoints where certain max hits give bonus hits4. * It is better against low-defence targets but can punch through a decent amount of defence4. * In Challenge Mode, monsters have higher stats, so the bow hits harder: it maxes about 96 on many bosses5. * With vambraces and a max-boost divine ranging potion it hits up to 75 instead of 73 in the Inferno10.

Best in slot uses

At release it was best in slot for Giant Mole, Zilyana, Kree'arra, Zamorak, King Black Dragon, the Dagannoth Kings, Chambers of Xeric, Zulrah, Abyssal Sire, Cerberus, Alchemical Hydra and brutal black dragons. Bandos' magic level had to be reduced because the bow was too overpowered there3.

Ammunition

Gnomonkey says users should basically always use dragon arrows over amethyst arrows11. Dragon arrows are about a 4% DPS upgrade and cost about 140k gp an hour versus about 40k gp an hour for amethyst, so about 2m gp an hour is technically needed for them to be worth it11. The one place he uses amethyst arrows is Zulrah, since damage is capped at 50 there and better arrows barely increase DPS11.

Where not to use it

  • Akkha: he says never to butterfly Akkha with a twisted bow because Akkha's magic level is very low, calling it terrible and worse than a rune crossbow12. A player who owns only a rune crossbow and a twisted bow should bring the crossbow swap13.
  • Inferno: a Twisted bow is not needed for a sub 65 Inferno. With a Bofa a player would wear a Slayer helmet and add about five minutes (his sub 53 would be about 58)14. Mage gear can all be downgraded, Masori is not required, and Crystal gear is the next best after Masori, even with a Twisted bow, because of its strong range defence15.

Inferno

In a 2022 stream Gnomonkey did a basic Inferno completion with the Twisted bow, saying he got so much use out of Deviate's original teaching stream that he made his own16. He says the Bow of Faerdhinen is almost the same as the Twisted bow on everything except Zuk, where it is 15% worse, and about 8% worse (not exact) on mages, so the Bofa is totally viable for the Inferno17. Asked whether Ahrim's/Master wand and Bofa is good enough, he says that is plenty as long as the Bofa is owned; it will be harder than with the Twisted bow but definitely doable18.

Challenge Mode Chambers

Gnomonkey calls the Twisted bow the ground floor for getting into Challenge Mode and the most important item for the raid5, and says that without one a player effectively cannot do Challenge Mode sensibly, since the gear requirement is high19. At Vasa he picks up Twisted items dropped in the room, and the bow makes the fight extremely fast. He calls his minute-long kill basically a world-record Vasa20. Shots on the Mage Vanguard can do around 80-90, so the Vanguard's reset threshold must be watched to avoid over-damaging it21.

Other uses

  • Jad Challenge (6 Jad): he highly recommends the bow, though it can be done with just a blowpipe22. He uses it rather than chinchompas to tag healers23. Because each challenge Jad has 5 healers, it is basically impossible to out-DPS them with the bow, unlike regular Jad24.
  • Nex: the bow is way, way better than the Toxic blowpipe against her minions because they have a lot of defence25. Its long range lets Gnomonkey and Hedron do step unders at Kruar and keep Nex stalled26.
