This article covers the gear and inventory choices Doom of Mokhaiotl setups use, as laid out by Gnomonkey in July 2025. His setup is max ranged: Twisted bow with Masori armour and a Fulmasori quiver, which he calls the typical max setup and the best known gear at the time.1
Main weapon
He first ran Scythe of Vitur with Ink because it has better DPS than the Twisted bow, but abandoned it because the boss melees through prayer too hard; the Twisted bow is within about 5% of Scythe-with-Ink DPS.56 He uses dragon arrows (p++) because the boss can be poisoned and they deal 4 poison damage as free extra DPS; they cost almost 3k each but he considers the premium worth it for the loot.7 Gearscape (which had added the boss) gives the Twisted bow setup about 11.55 DPS, closer to 12 including poison, which Gearscape does not model.8
| Setup | Relative to Twisted bow | Cites |
|---|---|---|
| Scorching bow | about 13-14% worse | 910 |
| Bow of Faerdhinen | about 26% worse (about 15% worse than Scorching bow) | 911 |
| Blowpipe | about 5% worse | 12 |
The 26% and 15%-plus-15% figures are consistent with penalties compounding.11 He would not do the content with a Bofa and says to get a Scorching bow instead.911 Clears with the Scorching bow are possible, but good DPS is important for killing the boss in time and low damage makes the fight harder.13
A Scorching bow is the only truly required item, as it is the only ranged demonbane weapon and the setup needs three types of demonbane; what matters is having them, not their strength.143 The mage demonbane is Dark demonbane cast from any staff (a Skull sceptre or Purging staff work equally, so a purging staff is not required), and the melee demonbane can be an Arclight, Darklight or even Silverlight, whose job is mainly to one-shot the grubs, which an Arclight does as well as an Ember light.15153 Burning claws are slightly demonbane and also one-shot grubs.16 Dark light is superior to Ember light when stalling the shield phase because it is so weak (about 8 strength bonus) that its damage is irrelevant and the boss is damaged by grubs, and it is cheaper in death costs.17
Without a Twisted bow, his second best setup is a Scorching bow in Void rather than Masori: the Scorching bow has built-in accuracy and Void gives four extra max hits, so it is cheaper and better.218 If using the Scorching bow, the blowpipe is the best option, since the rock block tech lets the player pipe almost the whole time.12 Without a Zaryte crossbow, blowpipe specs are 100% accurate in car phase and give health back; after the second shockwave the Scorching bow goes back on, and the player keeps piping if a rock is close to the boss.19
Masori versus Void
With max ranged, Masori maxes 81 and Void 86 (five extra max hits), but Void gives up about 9% accuracy; Void is better in 100% accurate phases like the car and shield phases.20 By 25 July he favoured Masori, being roughly 12% better overall, because the boss's protection prayers can be partly blocked by armour as at the Leviathan, reducing off-prayer hits (up to about 60 damage). Masori blocks about 10% more mage and 17% more ranged damage than Void, with little difference for melee.2122
Void gives more burst in the car phase, which is why many bring it, but it can low-roll and its low accuracy can leave the player missing and facing the orb phase; Masori's accuracy is better for Zaryte crossbow and Dragon knife specs outside 100% accurate phases.23 By the end of the month he said in the description he was back to Void, because he needs to improve zero-damage prayer flicking and out-DPS the car phase for late delves, though Masori is still great.24
Specials
He brings both a Ralos and a Zaryte crossbow: the Zaryte spec is better on average but the Ralos fits in more specs.25 In later caves he opens with a Ralos spec and uses the Zaryte crossbow later in the phase, because a Zaryte opener can waste spec energy when the phase takes long; this still lands about 80 to 90 damage.25 His ranking in ranged gear is Zaryte crossbow, Ralos, Elder maul, Warhammer, with everything after that very poor.26 The Elder maul is fairly close to the Ralos because it applies a similar defence drain; the Warhammer is decent but less accurate (about 73% against 83%).27 The Ember light spec is a stab spec with 44% accuracy and an average drain of 6, which he calls unusable.26 The video description gives a spec order of Zaryte crossbow, Chally punish, Blowpipe spec, and for the car phase Zaryte crossbow, Dragon knife, Blowpipe spec; a Dragon knife in the car phase passes a Zaryte crossbow when the boss is below 350 HP.28 If players eventually melee the boss he speculates Voidwaker may become the best spec, though he does not know whether melee is viable.26
Many adds can be one-shot and constantly give spec back, and a Lightbearer returns spec energy often during the fight's downtime, so he thinks it is very likely worth camping instead of a Venator ring, which grants no max hit.467 For Iron Men without spec weapons he suggests Desert Treasure 2 rings, but pushing past about cave 4 is much harder without a Zaryte crossbow or Dragon knives; a Warhammer or Elder maul still drains defence with about 80% accuracy in full ranged gear.29
Inventory and spells
- Double Death Charge is insanely important, and the content is not worth attempting without it; there is no better place for it, even better than Kephri or Tombs of Amascut, and he suggests getting it from Yama first. Everything in the fight, including the grubs and the boss's corpse after each cave, gives Death Charge, so he spams it.44
- Buckler: brought solely to raise the Zaryte crossbow's accuracy; wearing the Book of the Dead instead for an extra slot (such as another brew) is also fine.30
- Serpentine helm: he advises against it because of its negative ranged accuracy; Sanfew serum or one anti-venom potion is suggested instead.31
- Surge potion: he does not bring one because the fight lasts only about 10 minutes through cave 8 (at most three doses) and a brew is more valuable; he might change this once the fight is mastered.32
- Ward of Arceus: he was unsure whether it works against all attacks or only autos; if all, it may be worth a slot (with nature runes) over one brew, but he had not tested it.32
