Verzik Vitur is the final boss of the Theatre of Blood. Gnomonkey calls her by far the most dangerous boss of the raid, with three phases that play more like separate fights: a pillar phase built around the Dawnbringer, a middle-of-the-room bomb phase, and a spider phase that alternates ranged and magic.1 He later describes her as one boss with three phases whose mechanics would take about ten minutes to explain.8

His verdict is that she has to be an S tier fight, especially because of the tornadoes at the end and the amount of skill in not losing ticks, and that she ends up above Nylocas.9 Phase 2 is the least interesting skill test of the fight: a four-tick attack cycle, healing crabs after 35%, and knowing when to ignore the crabs.10

Preparation

  • On a first visit, set up tile indicators for the middle tiles (phase 2) and for the tiles behind pillars (safe from the phase 1 magic attack). Drop potions between a set of pillars as a marked spot.11
  • Have at least one player with a tentacle whip or serpentine helm on each side to poison the purple Nylocas. Keep at least two inventory spaces open for the staff and two-handed weapons.11
  • New players should drop a large amount of potions (all but two brews and two restores), because potions carried to the grave cannot be used by the team. Fewer can be dropped with experience.12
  • Players with Lunars can cast Pot Share on teammates' super restores to save total restores, easiest on off-ticks while attacking or at any time below 35%.13
  • After the kill he considers leaving teammates a single potion rude, and says to take as many potions as possible immediately after the kill ends while leaving more for others.14
  • For the 2023 hard-mode solo he planned five extra prayer doses, a divine potion at the start of P2, three restores for P3, no flicking in P3 and two shield charges for the red phase.15

Phase 1: pillars

Players take turns speccing with the Dawnbringer between Verzik's attacks. Regular attacks are capped at a max hit of 10, while the Dawnbringer spec does 75 to 150 uncapped and cannot splash. Taking damage in P1 is a huge waste because the supplies are needed later.4 Scythe and thralls give the most DPS.8

Her P1 magic attack hits anyone in her line of sight, up to 68 through prayer (he later puts it at up to 60 through Protect from Magic, about every 15 ticks). Standing behind a pillar makes her hit the pillar instead; it collapses after about four to five attacks and deals around 50 to anyone next to it. After the first pillar falls the team moves to the other northern pillar.168 When her HP reaches zero all remaining pillars collapse, so players should be away from them.17

To start, stand on the ready tile and pray Protect from Magic, since an unprotected mage hit can reach 137. The first player in orb order has the spec primed and starts the fight. Nobody should repot or use Piety in P1, as the prayer points are not worth it.18

Each Dawnbringer spec costs 35% special energy. The first player in orb order fires two specs and drops the staff, the second picks it up for two specs and runs behind the pillar, and so on as energy regenerates. Others fit in two whip hits or two scythe hits (one tick of leeway) per attack by clicking Verzik when she spreads her legs wide.5 A later description calls this the 1-1-2 trio order: the first two players do one spec each and the next does two before getting behind the pillar, all tick perfect.19

  • After a pillar goes down you can still attack twice and run diagonally to the other pillar. If forced to use the back pillars, swap to mage for two to three hits.17
  • Without the staff, open with a claw swipe then three scythe hits and be behind the pillar tick perfectly. Four scythe hits do not fit; four whip hits always fit. Alternatively, switch to a staff behind the pillar for a pre-hit, then swap to scythe for two hits. The same pre-hit works with the Dawnbringer after the first four players have used two specs.20

Phase 2: bombs and Nylocas

Verzik fires ranged skull bombs every four ticks that explode on contact with the ground. After every four bombs a lightning ball goes to a random target and bounces up to four times between teammates; if it is not bounced into Verzik, the last player takes about 50, so the attacking position matters.21 Lightning bounces can deal up to about 40 and usually lead to a bomb hit; if bounced, click back on immediately to get back into cycle.22

  • Nylocas bombs target a player and walk toward them, stopping next to the tile and exploding a tick later for up to 64 at the centre, 8 at two tiles and 0 at three. If one is coming, wait until it is one tile away, then run three tiles. Do not run to the edge of the map: lightning then cannot chain to teammates, it hits for 50, and bomb timing slows for everyone.2324
  • Purple orb: a large purple orb at a random player deals over 50 if directly under it and becomes a large purple Nylocas that gradually heals Verzik until poisoned. Poisoning stops the healing and deals a large poison splat; use a free hit with a tentacle whip or serpentine helm.2324

At the start of the phase each player stands on their tile on their potion side and uses the brief window while she moves to the centre to repot and activate Piety and Protect from Ranged. He recommends a whip over a scythe for inexperienced players because timing is more lenient: go in for one hit right after she attacks and zigzag out, using her cape moving as the cue.25 Zigzag toward the centre of Verzik rather than above or below her, since otherwise lightning can bounce to the other side without hitting her.22

Scythe walking. Her attack cycle is four ticks and the scythe is five-tick, so a player stands next to her on any safe tick and leaves only when she attacks, clicking when the cape moves and clicking back onto the bombs when they explode. Visual cues are unreliable when she skips bombs or teammates run far.26 He says a trainer exists, linked in his description, though it does not feel 100% accurate; he suggests practising on bronze or iron dragons near the Catacombs entrance in full tank gear with an anti-dragon shield and a low-damage five-tick weapon, for around 30 minutes first.27

35% (red crabs). At 35% Verzik summons two red Nylocas on each side and puts up a barrier for a short time during which any damage to her heals her fully. The red Nylocas heal her their full remaining health after several of her attacks, and she begins using healing magic attacks while still occasionally firing skull bombs.28 Activate Protect from Magic and attack the red Nylocas only as needed, since they heal Verzik one to one. Scythers return to Verzik after two hits (only two land on the Nylocas) while whippers lower the Nylocas health.29

Phase 3: spider

Phase 3 is the final challenge and a DPS race in which most food is used. She alternates magic and ranged randomly, with damage calculated when the attack hits (as with Jad or Nightmare), so prayers are switched to match the telegraphed attack. Keep health above 60 and recombat pot after brewing.30

She selects a random tank. If the tank is in melee range when she attacks, she can melee the whole team for up to 60, so the tank stays under her or steps away each attack; if the tank is out of melee range for more than two attacks she swaps tanks.3 The attack cycle is seven ticks.31 She makes four normal attacks before each special, always in the order Nylocas bombs, webs, musical chairs (yellow tiles), death ball.3

Special Effect Handling
Nylocas bombs Bombs target players Spread out first to see who is targeted; pull them away from the tank if they target you.32
Webs After four more attacks she goes to the centre and sprays webs; stepping on one stuns and deals around 50 when it disappears unless teammates deal at least 8 to it Experienced teams web run: wait on the tile for her to reach the centre, spam click, hit and wait a tick, then run and hit on each side. Others wear mage gear and staff and hit while running clockwise, freeing anyone caught. The tank can hit twice before going under her thanks to the delay after webs.3233
Musical chairs She is immune; one yellow tile per player; two or more on a tile means everyone takes the full orb damage of around 70 Stay put once on a tile. In a pinch there are about two ticks to tick eat the orb, or chug a bruise.34
Death ball Hits a random player for 474 (the green ball is also described as hitting up to 74) Usually tanked, healing to 115 with a bruise during musical chairs. If a teammate stands on you it bounces to them for small damage to both; bouncing it to three unique players dissipates it, which is rarely practical.3531

Web running is easy, and yellow tiles are mostly about communication.31 Vengeance casters comfortable with P3 can pot share a stamina to everyone before webs so teammates bring more brews instead of stamina. To always reach webs, count four attacks after bombs come out, then stand in the web position. Tanks can one-tick tank by moving away or under Verzik only the tick before she attacks, sometimes gaining an extra scythe swing.36

Below 20%

Below 20% Verzik enrages, which he calls the most dangerous and difficult part of the raid. She summons a purple tornado per player, each following only its owner. Being hit takes half your current HP and heals Verzik (a 30 hit heals her 3% of your total health), and she attacks every 5 ticks instead of 7.2

  • Communicate before starting the phase, and hold off attacking if she is near 20% right before a dangerous special such as musical chairs. Once below 20%, keep moving as the phase starts (a tornado can often be run through without damage) and dump both claw specs; if the whole team does this without taking a tornado, it is usually enough to kill her.37
  • Priorities are, in order: not taking a tornado, not dying, hitting the boss. A tank keeps running from Verzik, getting one hit per her attack, and can run through her if stuck in a corner. Getting caught in a web is a guaranteed tornado.38
  • If only one person web runs, she may shoot in front of them, so run a bit further each hit. For musical chairs, run farther from the yellow tile to lure the tornado away and then run toward it; if timing is off, tick eat the yellow orb and keep moving. This is why the team waits until after yellow tiles to start the sub-20% phase.39
  • He advises stopping worrying about your own health, praying magic without switching, dumping both claw specs and hitting at every opportunity even while healing. Players who run around taking tornadoes and doing no damage would help more by being dead.40

Solo and hard mode

In the 2023 hard-mode solo, P1 is the same as in regular solo ToB; he alternates sides because she drops rocks around the pillars, and a mage hit can exceed 99.41 P2 is very different: her lightning only maxes at 14, so constant tick eating is unnecessary, but her bombs drop poison, so he must avoid the crab pop tile.66 At 35% only one red crab spawns instead of two, so the fight can be done normally for 15 minutes without tick eating.7 He asks Jagex to make the regular solo ToB red crab phase work this way.7 P3 is an extremely long normal P3: mistakes must be minimised so supplies hold out, and he uses ancient godsword effects where possible for health.42 He concludes hard mode Verzik is winnable.43

Two tricks from that run: the green ball can be handled with Redemption, working like tick eating the ball but only with the prayer and not with normal food.44 He removes his Blood Fury while swinging at P3, because healing too much can prevent Redemption from triggering and kill him.44

Regular solo ToB (2024)

In March 2024 he states that lightning hits 50 every time, so it must be tick eaten.45 In a solo, attacking Verzik at any point after she drops under 35% spawns red crabs that heal her indefinitely, so the only way is to wait for purple crabs and poison them while tick eating for 15 minutes. Swinging at her under 35% risks ending the raid.4647 Viewers told him that procing the red crabs is tech because the raid just ends instead of the 15 minutes of tick eating, and he tried it.48 In one room he skipped the scythe and cast, because with a heart and full mage robes casting is slightly better: scythe hit splats are capped at 10, the spell is uncapped with a decent max hit, and casting does not lose ticks.49

After the May 2024 update

After the update, Verzik's max hit exceeds a player's max health, so a P2 mistake means instant death.50 In solo P2 he uses mage and Piety, relies on Blood Fury healing to tank the lightning, and brews or uses Redemption when heals are unlucky. He notes tick eating may not be needed at all.50 Lightning can still occur in solo, but only after four bombs in a row, and her mage attacks do not count toward that, so it is very rare.51 Blood Fury makes the solo P2 change night and day: he no longer has to run away and tick eat and can simply click Verzik.52 Her mage attack drains prayer, which he thinks is about five points per hit, so prayer gets tight and he flicks a bit.50 He used Blood Barrage in P1, calling it tech, and says it always seemed to give three heals.53
