The Grotesque Guardians (Dawn and Dusk) are a Slayer boss fought on the roof of the Slayer Tower, requiring both ranged and melee.11 In the guide video Gnomonkey calls them easily the hardest main Slayer boss in the game, and in the tier list video genuinely the most mechanically interesting one, with several phases, lots of gear switching, and last hits with a chally and ballista.14 Their loot is poor, so he judges them only on how interesting the fight is: he places them in high B tier, and in the final reordering below Zulrah in B tier.56

Requirements and access

A gargoyle Slayer task and 75 Slayer are required; he recommends only fighting them at max melee and ranged levels, especially ranged.12 The roof is unlocked by a brittle key dropped by gargoyles at 1/150, after which the boss is permanently accessible.7 To reach them, teleport to the Slayer Tower with a Slayer ring, climb the chain, go up the stairs, then climb the fence stairs; ringing the bell across the room starts the fight.8 The first five kills have a short cutscene; after five kills the bell gets a quick start option that skips it.8

The fight

Gnomonkey starts in ranged equipment.8 Dawn is the female purple flying ranged gargoyle and Dusk is the big orange melee gargoyle; the fight swaps between them over several phases, ending with Dawn killed and Dusk, who has absorbed Dawn's essence, finished off.9 Dusk has a trample attack when fought on his own, so the player should never stand under him in those phases; while fighting Dawn, standing under Dusk is safe.9 He summarises the fight as mostly hitting the boss and moving away from things on the ground: the heal skip is just shooting a lot and hoping, and the end is switching prayer to whatever the boss last attacked with.10

Trip and rates

Because the fight is an instance, loot stays on the ground practically forever, so he picks up only the main items he can carry during the trip and loots everything once out of supplies.11 After a fight he teleports to his house to resupply.12 A standard trip at max efficiency lasts around 30 minutes, with 36 kills per hour.33

Drops

Two rolls are made per kill, with lots of ores, bars, alchables, coins, and combat potions, prayer potions or mushroom potatoes.11 Gnomonkey says the loot is not exceptional because the main rewards are tank gear (granite ring, granite gloves, guardian boots), and in max efficiency gear a player loses a little money here.1 Most people kill them for the pet and the passive granite dust, which is why his guide focuses on max efficiency.2

Drop Rate / value
Granite maul, granite ring, granite gloves, granite hammer All under 150k; unexceptional rare drops3
Black tourmaline core 1/500; creates guardian boots; the only decent drop3
Jar of Stone 1/5,000; about 1.2 million gp3
Pet 1/3,000; about an 83 hour grind at 36 kills an hour33

The pet is a flying purple gargoyle in its noon form or a huge grounded glowing orange gargoyle in its midnight form; he calls it one of the best and coolest pets in the game.23
