The rock block method is a technique for the Doom of Mokhaiotl's car phase, in which the player uses rocks placed in advance to absorb the boss's dash shockwaves. It was developed by Gnomonkey and Hedron, and the rock tile markers were shared on pastebin.1 Gnomonkey says that done properly the player is never hit by a shockwave again and that it is guaranteed safe; shockwaves with no rocks left had been taking a lot of his health.4 It is used on delve 6 and up.2

How it works

The boss's shockwave radiates from its dead centre tile, so if the boss ends dead centre on a rock the rock absorbs the whole shockwave: the player takes no damage and no other rocks are destroyed.56 In the car phase the boss's eyeball spawns exactly four tiles behind the player, and the car comes from the boss's dead centre tile, so the player controls both where the boss goes and where the rocks land.7

  1. Drop rocks at the start of the fight, because the boulders the boss throws land where the player stands.7
  2. After the shield phase, as soon as the car phase starts, stand on the colour-coded bait tile until the eyeball appears behind you, then click out of the way.78
  3. The first placed rock blocks the first shockwave and protects the second. Stay in line with the first rock until the next eyeball spawns directly on the second rock, then sidestep so the boss ends on top of it.9
  4. After the second rock is hit the boss makes one more dash; position so it destroys no rock, go behind any other rock and block that last shockwave.10

The player only needs to be in line with rock one on the axis, not on the exact dodge tile, so the eyeball lands four tiles behind onto rock two.11 The method uses only four tiles; pick the side with the least acid at the start of the cave and use that side's tiles.3 Imported tile markers do not show until delve 6, which differs from lower delves and clears all the acid.12

Placing the rocks

  • On early caves the boss throws only one rock, and the player may have to wait at about 75% health for a second rock before the melee punish.13
  • On cave 8 the boss shoots two rocks, so there is no waiting.1415 Time the placement to the prayer shutting off: click from rock two to just past rock one as soon as prayer turns off, pathing past in one motion while the second boulder shatters over rock one, then pray against the next attack.16 On delve 8 both double-boulder attacks turn off prayer, so he recommends stepping onto a tile where rubble just landed, since rubble cannot land where a shadow was. Both rocks can be placed with one attack, anywhere along the lines.1718
  • Waves 6 and 7 have no double rocks, so the player must stall: the shield phase starts at 75% health, and going below that sends the boss into shield phase with no more rocks.1920
  • Rubble hitting the second rock moves it to a random tile. To avoid it, wait for the rock to explode, step out to a tile with no shadow, then step back onto a tile that had a shadow; the boss cannot place rubble on a tile the player stepped to.1521
  • Grubs must not be alive during the method, since if they die while the boss dashes it destroys the rock.22
  • Overkill as the boss dashes toward a rock, for example by attacking right after sidestepping, destroys the rock. Avoid it by not summoning a thrall (a one-in-four chance of the problem), summoning it only near the very end, and delaying the attack.23

Described above, with the caveat that grubs and thralls had to be managed.2223

Patch and revised tech (31 July 2025)

After a patch, the earlier car park tech still lets the player park the boss on a rock, but the shockwave now destroys the rock under the middle of the boss, so the player can no longer sit there for the whole car phase.24 Dragging the boss south or west always destroys the rock (car park only works on the north and east side), which also applies to the second drag, so Gnomonkey built a new method.19

The modified tech places one rock on the car park tile and one on a "rail" tile at the sides. The first rock under the boss blocks the first shockwave and the second lets the player hide for the next.25 After the shield phase, lure the boss onto the car park rock, stand next to the wall to hold it in place, hide behind the second rock, then drag the boss to the centre of the room and hide behind one more rock.266 Any of the green tiles works for the second rock; green tiles drag the player to the boss's corner, out of range, so a Chally punish is possible, while a Chally punish from a white tile drags the player into melee range, likely in acid.2728

  • The boss on top of the rock means its shockwave does nothing; players are scared of going under the boss, but the shockwave does not hit there.6
  • To bait the second dash, stand against the wall one or two tiles from the boss, or directly under it if acid is a problem; there is no clear cue and the player learns when the boss reads their position.29
  • After the second shockwave, run as fast as possible to the middle, because the further the boss dashes the more damage is done before the phase ends; then hide behind any far rock, often in a corner, while still shooting.30
  • With only one rock placed (shield phase too early), the method still blocks one shockwave and the boss can be dragged to a corner. A badly placed rock can usually still be survived if the first rock is on the right tile.3132

Gnomonkey considers the new rock block better than car park, since the longer the boss is dragged the more Twisted bow shots he gets: about two extra, greatly improving the odds of killing before the orb phase.33 It fits 1 Zaryte crossbow shot and 8 Twisted bow shots in the car phase, with the first two shockwaves in range for Toxic blowpipe or Dragon knife specs; he reached wave 24 with it.34 He says it works on all waves without stipulations like thralls or zero grubs, and that jmods confirmed it is fine and fair and similar to the patched car park tech.35

Later refinements (9 August 2025)

  • Do not kill the boss too much before placing the second rock, as going below 75% sends it into shield phase.20
  • Once both rocks are placed and shield phase ends, get within the quadrant before the eyeball appears so it spawns on the rock, then spam specs.36
  • Since holy water does not work on delve 9 and above, he now drags the boss to a corner or side to maximise dash time instead of the middle. Being dragged 11 tiles out into a shockwave can easily happen, so greed shots only when close.3637
  • Keep the boss in place if the rock is in line with it, since pulling it to a corner would destroy the rock.38
