Muttadile is the Chambers of Xeric meat tree room, and Gnomonkey calls it the worst boss in the game. He first states this in March 2022 in a video made partly to rant about it5, repeats it in 20236 and again in 20247, and says he would be happy to see it removed8. He calls it a very high damage room where the player should be ready to spam brew9.

Mechanics

  • The small Muttadile is sporadic: sometimes backing off, sometimes approaching, switching between ranged and melee even while biting, and sometimes not allowing safe spotting around the tree5. Freezing it needs someone beyond Ancient magic, and the big Muttadile cannot really be frozen because of its very high magic level (needing a ZGS). In Challenge Mode at most scales the player just chops the tree while being hit10.
  • Big Muttadile has an instant-kill melee attack and can combo for 60 or more in one hit. Jagex reduced combo potential by raising the minimum and lowering the maximum hit8. The combined max hit of the baby's off-prayer ranged attack and Mama Muttadile's magic attack means the player can take 89 in a single game tick1. Mama maxes 38 with any given attack, so even constantly brewing she can kill the player if she maxes each attack211. In 2024 he warns she can hit for 70 at any moment3.
  • Mama does at least three mage attacks in a row before switching to ranged1213.
  • Muttadiles are four-tick, so the player five-tick steps under it exactly like Nex4. The trees work the same as the Ice Demon trees: every five ticks, as long as the player is chopping when it gets red14.
  • If the Muttadile drops below 50% health it heals off the tree, which the player wants to avoid1516.

Strategy

Basic approach

Run up to the meat tree and chop it down while casting at the baby Muttadile until it is under 50% HP6. In 2024 he runs straight to the tree, drops an item and chops; between each XP drop he throws a hammer-style attack at it (throwing at the baby does not interrupt chopping), and chopping damage depends on Woodcutting level17. Chopping and attacking share the same five-tick cycle, so he casts on every XP drop, trying to get the Muttadile near 50% before the tree falls16. Do not walk into melee range of the mother, who can one-shot12.

Prayer: pray melee when near Muttadile and range when far16, and pray melee when she gets close, expecting a lot of damage from random ranged attacks15. Switch to Protect from Magic when the mother begins maging, since she guarantees at least three mage hits in a row1213.

After chopping the tree, he equips full mage gear and summons a thrall. The walk-under method with offensive prayer flicks reduces damage a little and mostly increases survival odds2. With two throws then stepping under until off cooldown, the player takes one hit to two of his own18.

Supplies

He brews until running low, then sweet tick eats every attack; when one of them falls he grabs brew and revite and moves on19. Burning brews in the room can mean the difference between two and six brews for Olm, and it is completely random1. He equips tank (melee) armour and just the Sanguinesti staff and brews a lot3. When re-overloading, spam brew16. He kills Muttadile first and sips the overload it drops immediately for the rest of the raid, so only one dose of a pre-raid potion is needed rather than a multi-dose20.

Skips and tricks

  • Tentacle skip: wait a tick before the room to run past the tentacles a bit faster6.
  • Tendril skip: click to a spot so the tendril spawns behind the player, then run straight past it14. In November 2024 he mentions it as an option but does not demonstrate it21.

No-prep approach (2025)

In May 2025 he camps Augury for defence, flinches under the Muttadile and keeps health high, one-way mages, and throws on the Zamorak godsword to spec just before it falls below 50% health, freezing it22. This saves brews in no-prep because both Muttadiles are frozen before they reach the tree and killed instead of being tanked throughout23. For the mother, get to the corner quickly; he flicks Bandos to be tankier, which is optional24. If the Zamorak godsword spec misses, stand on a particular tile because the mother gets stuck there when going back to eat the tree and cannot hit the player13.
