The Great Olm is the final boss of the Chambers of Xeric. Gnomonkey calls it one of the best fights in the game and, from 2023 onward, the hardest part of both the raid and Challenge Mode, and teaches it mainly through its turn cycle: the 3-0 and 4-1 methods, Shadow running, flame wall nulling and acid handling.
Opinion and difficulty
- In 2022 Gnomonkey called the Olm one of the best fights in the game, with so much skill and thought in the cycles, and placed it in lower S tier1. He argued it works because the whole raid is preparation for one final battle, and that in teams it is usually really simple1.
- He considers it by far the hardest part of Challenge Mode, needing a lot of practice2, and in 2024 the hard part of the raid, much harder solo than in teams because teammates can do things that make it easier3. In 2025 he calls it easily the hardest part and says that when soloing "you will die a billion times"4.
- His overview is that if the hammers land it is usually fine, and if not a lot of brews are wasted but he never dies, with about two minutes of variation mostly from hammer RNG5. A low two-minute hand phase is good in his view6.
- Dislikes (2022): teleports that can randomly place the player in a corner in solo, and the melee hand defence holding Olm back if a hammer is missed7.
- He says a lot of players, including himself for hundreds of kills, are scared of the 4:1 because nobody explained it well8, and that Shadow running and 4:1 are not hard once the player knows what to do and is not pulled out of cycle by acid and flame walls9. He advises doing some team runs before solo Chambers10, and that a solid understanding of Olm in solo is all that is wanted before starting Challenge Mode, with inventory management the hardest part11.
Structure and turning
- Olm can spawn on either side of the arena and flips back and forth through the fight; the side it starts on is kept for phases two and three12. In 2025 he gives it as a 50-50 chance and says the sides are very similar, except when shadowing4.
- There are three phases, each with a mage hand and a melee hand. With the mage hand still up, damaging the melee hand makes it cripple, so the mage hand is killed first and the melee hand second, except on phase three where the melee hand does not cripple41314.
- The head only attacks if it can see the player, with a very narrow field of view; otherwise it turns toward the player15. Olm only knows the player is on the far side if the hand on that side is being damaged; if nobody hits that hand and the player is outside his view he turns to the middle16. Attacking the far-side hand makes him turn all the way over17.
- Gnomonkey describes a four-attack cycle of attack, null, attack, special, which allows choosing which attack hits the player; the first attack should be tanked rather than the special18.
- On phase three Olm adds a fourth special attack, a heal aura on the melee hand that cannot be damaged and heals from damage dealt, so the melee hand should be killed quickly19. He also notes Olm can use hand heal after the mage hand dies, and the hand then respawns20. On phase three he advises not killing the melee hand early because it respawns as a phase three special21.
Methods
- Overview (2022): he described solo methods as a 1-4 (or 4-1) melee method, four melee hits then dodging the special without losing ticks, and a 4-0 magic method taking no hits from Olm, including on the last phase by switching gear very fast22.
- Naming (2024): by 2024 he gives the two solo methods as 3-0 with mage on the mage hand and 4-1 with melee on the melee hand, the first number being the hits the player gets in the cycle and the second the hits Olm gets23.
- Shadow running (2023): in the 12:0 method he uses marked tiles numbered by the hit of the cycle (hit from one then run to the side and return, hit from two to be dragged and come back, hit from three, a long range hit from four, hit from five, repeating one to five until the hand is dead, usually about two cycles)24. The 8:1 variant actually tanks a hit, which he says is a lot harder than 12:025. In stream form: hit on three, long range cast on four, hit on five and reset, a five-attack cycle26. See Shadow running.
- Rule of thumb (2024): enter each phase with the hammer on and hammer first, then mage every time except the last phase27. On phase one he later added that dragging into a mage hit at the start, since Olm instantly turns after spawning, can replace the opening hammer, with a hammer immediately afterwards28.
- 4:1 lance method (2023): go to the thumb, tank two hits, then repeat the same cycle on the right tick29. On the thumb there are three outcomes: a special attack followed by another attack and then nothing (wait one attack, then run when he does nothing); two attacks in a row (run immediately and do a three-to-one); or he stares and does nothing, meaning the player is already in cycle30.
- Getting into cycle: wait until Olm is about to turn and click from tile one, hitting a tick after he turns31. If the player loses a tick, go back to one and restart the cycle32. In 2024 he adds hovering by default and clicking when the XP drop appears, returning to the thumb (a 3:0 setup) if a tick off33. Mage running is set up by dragging from the first tile on the same tick Olm does; a 3-0 followed by a hit sets up the 4-134. A Scythe swing on the wrong tick can fix the timing35.
- Reading the cycle: if Olm does two auto attacks the player does a three-to-one36, and the player should attack the tick after he attacks37. He tick eats the teleport by clicking right after it teleports him38.
- Phase three: the melee hand does not clench, so it can be started with the melee hand; with a hammer, hammer, wait for the turn and be in 4:1 every time, tick-perfect with two hammers3940. In 2025 he adds that two missed hammer hits plus a drag on the same tick as Olm is a guaranteed four-to-one41.
- Crystal phase: an L walk, moving every tick and tanking a hit, after which he does nothing and the player is in cycle42. See L running.
- Acid: start attacking and L walk, stepping across, hitting, coming around and hitting twice, repeating43. In the 2024 teaching he steps to a set tile and uses the lance cooldown, doing the fourth hit there so the acid disappears as he arrives44.
Flame walls
- Standing next to a wall or in the dead centre lets the flame skip work45. In the 4:1, standing on a specific tile when tanking the attack nulls the wall, and either side also nulls it when coming back in46.
- In 2024 he says that tanking the hit on the pinky side on phase three leaves too little room for a flame wall, so the attack is nulled47; being in the middle also prevents it48. In 2025 he repeats that standing against the wall on the pinky side nulls it (the animation still plays), while on the other side the player must go all the way to the wall49.
- If flame skips are not yet known, a watering can gives eight flame wall escapes and can save a brew if more than two flame walls are tanked in a kill48.
- Flame walls deal about 60 damage if the player is trapped; on flame phase he dodges from the ring finger side50. On phase three any special or phase-specific attack can come, so a flame wall can be assumed at any time51. Tanking a hit in the middle also nulls the wall during the melee hand52.
Head phase and last phase
- Head phase is the most dangerous part; heal before it rather than during it53, brew heavily and have a lot of health54, and heal at least once between phases below about 40 health, being full before the melee hand55.
- In 2022 he said the player takes a hit about every four turns, or can skip ticks with a Twisted bow to avoid all damage45. In 2023 he describes head running as moving every time Olm turns, tanking a hit every four turns in the middle, which nulls flame walls56.
- On the Bofa head phase (2024) he moves as the head is about to turn, tanks a hit in the middle, waits for the head to catch up and repeats; moving too early takes a hit every time57. Running too fast to the other side makes Olm turn and hit an extra time5859. Falling crystals are a 3x3 AoE to be dodged constantly60.
- The last phase (2024): swap to ranged and summon a ranged thrall, moving the instant the head turns from the side so hits land in the middle where flame walls cannot hit6162. He has never done a solo Olm without a Twisted bow, and being pulled up at the end shortens its travel time63.
Gear, consumables and settings
- Thralls: important while learning, because the thrall keeps the hand turning all the way; if it splashes or stops attacking the hand turns mid-way64. Thralls ignore defence and hit almost every time, so one attacking the hand being killed makes Olm predictable176566. See Thralls.
- Accurate stance: the weapon must be on accurate or the method does not work6768.
- Boots: remove them at Olm if possible, since they give minus 12 mage accuracy69.
- Eclipse Moon outfit: with the full set he found the Atlatl slightly better than a Rune crossbow; the set effect adds burn at 10 damage per stack and per proc7059.
- Brewing and prayer: he tries to brew every 15 seconds to keep stats and HP high5 and uncharges his Tumeken's shadow for the runes needed for Vile Vigor71. With two restores he keeps prayer around 30, since an orb at that level drains 10 instead of 1572. He advises against overloading on entry in the 500 kc range once good73.
- Plugins: the attack timer metronome plugin while learning the turn cycle, and the Cox Editions plugin to see the phase7450. See RuneLite plugins.
Notable runs
- 2023-05: six zeros in a row on the lance phase, which he called possibly one in a hundred thousand odds and which cost four hits of time75; he brewed every tick near the end and called the final kill the freest it has been once the damage landed7677.
- 2023-06: a stream Olm he called about as bad as it can go, each phase 20 to 30 seconds longer than it should be71.
- 2023-12: a world record Challenge Mode attempt failed at Olm; he died close to the door after a head phase with repeated jat attacks and burn and acid, calling it roughly a one in fifty thousand run787980.
- 2024-10: a second solo Olm finished with four brews left and a 4-2 result, which he called good enough81.
- 2025-03: in a duo with Hedron the head phase would not turn, the heal and defence levels kept resetting, which he attributes to the Twinflame staff; after he died to a flame wall with 6 HP they finished the kill and the drop was a Twisted bow8283.
