The Ice Demon is a room where players fill braziers with wood until he wakes up, so the first half is a chopping puzzle and the second half is a short boss fight1. Gnomonkey treats it as a speedrun room: he wants the Ice Demon to spawn at around the low four-minute mark and uses five minutes as his cutoff when going for a record, resetting if it is slower75. He says the room is more about banking skill and inventory management than anything else8.

Brazier puzzle

Chopping is a five-tick action. As long as the player is at a tree on the fifth tick, wood is received, so the player can move between trees without losing kindling910111. Moving between trees spreads out the chops and lowers the chance of chopping down the tree he wants to keep up, described as the one closest to the bank, the sapling he needs, or the one that would block the exit91011. A player who moves as soon as the XP drop happens can move three tiles per chop and so chop on the way to the Ice Demon12.

The kindling requirement is about 24 to 28 for each of the first two braziers (28 is the most that can be held), and about 10 for the third1314. Gnomonkey aims for 24–28 before depositing, with at least 10 needed, and says the player needs all but three kindling before leaving, which is roughly two and a half braziers' worth1511. In a speedrun it is better to have the south pillar gone and optimal to have both gone16.

Inventory handling

On arrival he drops a few potions (two in the earliest description) on the ground, equips his axe, drops the tinderbox, deposits everything and starts chopping911. The axe goes in a particular inventory corner, which keeps the inventory in place for banking afterwards10. After the third dump he drops the tinderbox and removes the axe, placing it back where it was so the inventory is exactly as it was8. He banks as many items as he can for the Vanguards8, and banks the first chest items, such as the peanuts, after the Ice Demon to make space14.

The Ice Demon drops enough supplies for prepping, so the crabs room does not need farming for supplies17.

The fight

The Ice Demon is on a three-tick attack cycle, so the player moves every time he does the animation, though sometimes the animation does not show. His area attack needs the player to move two tiles23. Players should pray ranged, because otherwise he will sometimes mage them63.

All damage against him is one-third effective, and fire spells deal 1.5 times normal damage, so Gnomonkey says using Surge saves about a minute4. Surge means using daily cape swaps to switch to thralls after the Ice Demon; he says the capes can be used up and the setup still done18.

Elder maul and luring

He uses an Elder maul and lures the Ice Demon by standing two tiles from the exit and flinching in and out. This is the same cycle as Vespula and uses almost no prayer because the 3x3 mage area attack misses19.

Hammer and specs

The Ice Demon's magic defence is affected by his normal defence, so Gnomonkey hammers him to hit more often14. Dragon warhammer on the Ice Demon therefore increases magic accuracy, and missing the hammer can often be the difference between continuing and resetting20. Many of his runs end because he does not hit a hammer21. He runs the Lightbearer partly because it gives an extra Ice Demon spec, using it twice or until he hits721.

If the Ice Demon dies before the five-minute mark, he swaps spellbooks and moves on to the Shamans20.
