The Shellbane Gryphon is a mid-level Slayer boss added with Sailing. Gnomonkey considers it maybe the easiest boss ever added, easier than Scurrius, with very simple mechanics and nothing that prepares new players for other content.589 He calls it a nothing burger, as if Kraken had been added again, and contrasts it with Moons (48 Slayer, teaching movement and combat) and Scurrius (prayer switching and small mobs).910
Requirements and access
It needs 51 Slayer and 45 Sailing, and the quest Troubled Tortugans (which unlocks at 45 Sailing); it also needs 60 combat.41 It must be unlocked as a Slayer task, which he thinks costs 80 Slayer points, and can only be killed on task.12 Gryphons can be assigned by Vannaka, Konar, Nieve and Duradel, and the task weight is six, the highest available.32 On average it takes about three tasks to get the new rapier.2
To reach it, use fairy ring CJQ, which leaves the player close to the cave entrance just north of it; a Dramen staff is needed unless the diary is done.1 In September 2025, before release, he called it the lowest-level Slayer boss in the game and at the low end of mid-level content, so probably not very hard.11612
Combat
Before release he said the Shellbane Gryphon, like regular gryphons, was weak to magic (air spells fit anything flying) but could be meleed.411 After fighting it in November 2025 he reports it is weak to stab and brings an Arkan blade.5 It attacks mostly with melee, with an occasional ranged attack, and performs a special attack every seven attacks.118
Weight mechanic
With more than 45 kg equipped the gryphon's knockback is blocked: it is stunned, the player blocks the damage and gets a bonus hit (two swings). Under 45 kg the knockback hits for roughly 10 to 30 damage and throws the player back.131314 Only equipped weight counts, not inventory. Gnomonkey took off body armour and was knocked back for 28.15 Falling short is not a problem: the boss is still easy to kill with a little extra damage.14 Regular gryphons have the same weight mechanic.4 Because magic gear is light, a mager might need extra weight, but endgame armour such as Masori is heavy enough.16
- A steel ring (a drop from the Deranged archaeologist on Fossil Island) is really heavy; mixed hide boots weigh a little more than climbing boots.17
- Disassemble the Slayer helmet and wear a black mask, which is heavier.13
Specials
- Tornadoes are placed near the feet roughly every five ticks (exact timing uncertain); they grow, hurt every tick if stood on, and explode if next to the player.8
- If five stack up and explode they deal about 70 (he saw 60 and 70), the only thing that can really hurt or kill the player, but only if the player falls asleep; moving a little avoids them.1819
- The acid attack is easy to dodge by stepping aside; if it hits it applies corrosion, which hits for 3s with a new hit splat. Removing all armour with defensive bonuses (including the ring) stops it, though this can mean dropping items.2020
Tortugan shield
The Tortugan shield, a quest item, blocks almost all of the gryphon's damage: without it melee hits are basically guaranteed, with it they do not hit at all. Regular attacks do almost no damage, so trips can be much longer.218
Gear and supplies
Gnomonkey approaches it as an Iron Man starting bossing: an Arkan blade (a decent stab weapon and spec from the quest that unlocks Mocha), Barrows gloves, mixed hide boots, a steel ring and Barrows tank armour (rune platebody and legs also fine).55 A Berserker ring is very good but no ring is fine.17 Supplies: supers, some prayer potions, lower-tier food and a teleport.22
Drops
The unique is the gleaming rapier, at around 1 in 440, which many players skip as not worth the time.67 It drops gryphon feathers (tradable, used to charge the Horn of Plenty), and a gryphon pet was added.2324 As a main the drops are probably not worth it; as an Iron Man there are some really good ones.25 He cited the pet jar saying it cannot be stored in the display case as evidence that Sailing was rushed; before release he hoped the pet could fly.2426
