Main source ARAXXOR BUDGET GUIDE - Release Day - OSRS

Araxxor is a Slayer boss added to Old School RuneScape from RS3. Gnomonkey stresses that it is not a backport like Nex was, but an entirely new boss using similar assets.1 It requires a Slayer level of 92.1 It needs a Slayer task, and Spider tasks count towards it, even though originally that was not going to be the case.3

Before release he was disappointed that the OSRS version would not match RS3 Araxxor, which he remembers as one of the toughest bosses: a 5 to 10 minute fight when released, dropping many Barrows-style weapons (he says BYS) including the Scythe.1 After release he treats it as a routine, quick kill with one standard method: Vengeance plus thrall and the best crush weapon.7 Its necklace drop alone he considers possibly more impactful than anything on the proposed drop table of Mokha, which has only a Slayer boss's drops.66

Background and expectations

The blog said the fight is not as difficult as the Awakened bosses or the Colosseum, and Gnomonkey compared it to Alchemical Hydra.8 It was described as primarily a melee fight with a choice system: eggs can be smashed for a slower, easier time, or minions can hatch, which speeds up the fight.9 Gnomonkey found this interesting as a way to balance difficulty for all skill levels but hoped Jagex would not gut the interesting pieces of the fight for mid-level content.10 He wished it were the nightmare-level fight he remembered and hoped at least that it would be more interesting than Alchemical Hydra.11 Because the Noxious halberd drops in pieces, he speculated that the fight might offer choices for different pieces.8

RS3 Araxxor

In RS3 the boss had multiple phases and paths, a second phase that differed by choice, and rare drops determined by the path taken.8 He recalls four phases plus a finale in which Araxxi drops down and devours Araxxor, feeling like a mix of Corporeal Beast and Phase 3 Verzik.12 One phase had an acid pool where the boss had to be lured to collect acid, then lured to a ramp so the acid destroyed it; he would not be surprised if this returns given the halberd's special attack.12 It was terrifying for hardcore ironmen because a mirrorback spider could spawn and make Araxxor return 100% of damage if not dealt with.9

RS3 Araxxor is an enrage boss: loot does not improve with kills, but he becomes harder every kill.13 In RS3 Leagues Gnomonkey pushed him to 80% enrage using a crystal halberd and mostly Bandos gear with his buffed combat relics.13 The fight forced him to learn ability rotations, defensive abilities, prayer swapping and movement; he had a blast but calls Araxxor a joke compared with other RS3 bosses.14 He describes it as some of the most fun he had in RS3 PvM.11

The fight

Araxxor's specials come every three attacks, and new spiders spawn every three attacks after that, so the fight alternates between special and spiders.15 Which special he uses depends on which egg comes first, and there are a handful of different specials.16

Spiders

  • Mirrorbacks: the only spiders worth killing. Run up, one-shot the mirrorback and return to the boss.17 Ignoring them reduces damage against the boss by 25%.18 A primary crush weapon such as the Bludgeon, Maracas or a mace always max hits the mirrorback; a scythe will not work because it is primary slash.19 The white spider egg's mirrorback is the worst, reflecting your own damage back (he took 11 to 13), but venging at the right time avoids that completely.20 Killing a mirrorback gives death charge, which cannot be obtained from the boss himself.16 The boss can also be dragged towards the mirrorback, going under the boss each time before attacking.21
  • Explosive spiders (orange): leave them alone, since killing them explodes into acid.22 They behave like the Tombs of Amascut volley baboon: under the boss they do 80 damage, on the edge less, such as 64.23 They "just do damage for you".17
  • Green and ranged spiders: these can be ignored.17 Praying ranged avoids all spider damage, and the ranged-spitting spider maxes 15 and does not hit often.24

Attacks and mechanics

  • Acid: like Ulm acid, it lasts a short time, but stepping under the boss before attacking avoids the damage.25 The special that puts acid in a corner is very easy to avoid.26
  • Ball special: each splat has an area-of-effect, so move two tiles away; it is very easy to dodge.27
  • Enrage: when the boss curls up his hands he targets where the player was standing when the animation starts, with three splats. Moving each time he raises his hands avoids all damage.28
  • Magic attack: it must be caught before the animation starts, otherwise a lot of damage is tanked. The enraged boss has about 250 health to go through.29
  • Stuck on the boss: damage is not dealt, which he calls new knowledge.30

Vengeance and thrall

Vengeance is worth bringing because of a mechanic where Vengeance nullifies damage. It has to be timed so the minions do not pop it first.31 Spamming it is wrong, since the mirrorback minions hit and pop it; time it with them.23 It can be cast as the XP drop appears and it works, as long as nothing else pops it.32 Losing two inventory slots to bring both venge and thrall plus death charge is pretty worth it for much faster kills, though not a big deal if venge is not possible.31

Preparation

  • Prepotting: stamina, divine and anglers before going in; do not fang the boss.33
  • Typical setup: a Ring of shadows and a Book of the Dead, runes (lava, astral, cosmic, death) in a rune pouch, and dropping four items at the cave entrance, giving vengeance and spellbook swap with thrall and death charge in two inventory slots.34
  • Teleports: the Spider Cave teleport is best but cost about 70k at the time, so he did not use it. The Hallowed Sepulchre teleport is second best, needing a shortcut that requires two long ropes at 50k each (100k total) to open permanently. Sepulchre teleports are incredibly cheap and worth getting by running some Sepulchre.313536

Gear

Araxxor is giga weak to crush, has a fairly low defence level and is giga defensive against stab. Slash defence is not too bad, so burning claws still work.2 Overall, crush is best-in-slot. Gnomonkey recommends Gearscape since it is updated with Araxxor.3

Weapon Position
Scythe of Vitur Better than everything else by quite a bit, about 6% better than the Soulreaper axe3
Soulreaper axe Next, better than the mace3
Mace Next best; the Twisted bow is a bit better than the Bludgeon and much worse than a mace337
Twisted bow Next best option if you own none of the scythe, axe or mace337
Bludgeon Slightly better than Maracas, Zamorakian hasta and Ursine chainmace38
Maracas, Zamorakian hasta, Ursine chainmace Roughly equal slight upgrades38
Zombie axe Worse than Maracas39

Until good weapons are reached everything is about the same.38 A ballista is worse than the normal setup because it is slower and needs a range potion.40

For specs, the Elder maul is best and a big time save; burning claws are second, followed by the Dragon warhammer. The Elder maul is straight better than the Bandos godsword.4 It is good because it is very accurate and the boss has a ton of health, so draining defence is still quite good.7 A Blood fury is very important at the Colosseum, so the amulet of rancour would have to be a switch there, and it cannot be used at Nex.41

Drops and rewards

Araxxor drops pieces of a halberd, and three pieces are needed to create it.5 The halberd is a venomous bonus drop.6 Gnomonkey calls it basically a five-tick weapon like a Sail door and not very good; its one use is as the only melee weapon that can venom without a Serpentine helm. This makes it useful for venoming Tormented Demons and a new best-in-slot melee DPS on Jads, especially for a melee Inferno.542 It may be worth pursuing on an ironman depending on rarity, but for mains he thinks nobody will care.43

By January 2025 he emphasised the other drop, a new best melee necklace with extra strength and a ton of extra accuracy, which he calls really important.6

He dislikes the loot system, in which the loot can be looted or right-click destroyed for a doubled pet chance, and says pet hunting that way feels really lame.41 He would prefer a system where rare drops can still be obtained, similar to Zalcano, noting RS3 has a similar system but lets you see the loot first.44
