Eye of Ayak is an item topic that Gnomonkey covers in 2 videos between 2025-03-11 and 2025-03-24. This article is a stub: his statements are grouped by type, repeated ones merged.

Stats and numbers

  • The Eye of Ayak's special attack, magic rending, is a five-tick attack with doubled accuracy, 30% higher max hit, and drains the target's magic defense equal to the damage dealt; it costs 100% special energy.1
  • The Eye of Ayak has three-tick attack speed, a 2 prayer bonus and a range of 6, compared with the Sanguinesti staff's 7 (nine on long range), so the Eye would be eight on long range; each attack costs two death runes and one chaos rune.2
  • In response to concerns about the Eye of Ayak's range of six, Jagex clarified that the staff also has a long range mode of eight, and says it will perform as expected for activities such as the Nylocas room at the Theatre of Blood.3
  • Jagex lowered the Eye of Ayak's special attack cost from 100% to 50% energy, which Gnomonkey calls a slight buff that takes the spec from utterly useless to pretty good.3
  • Jagex clarified that the Eye of Ayak's special attack will not drain an NPC's magic defense past zero and that NPCs will not regenerate the drained stat, which Gnomonkey says matters for NPCs that normally regen stats fast, such as Akkha.4
  • The Eye of Ayak is classed as a powered weapon like the trident, so it will not be usable in PvP.4
  • In Gnomonkey's calcs the Eye's special attack saves about one second on a 500 Akkha, but about 12 seconds on Warden phases 1 and 3, which he says is better than a Zaryte crossbow for much less spec cost.5
  • Gnomonkey estimates the Eye's spec saves about 1-2 seconds on non-melee Vanguards, about 3 seconds at the Vespula portal (but you must enter melee range with the range of eight), and about 1-2 seconds on the Ulm hands, with the saving multiplied by team size in raids.6

Gnomonkey's opinion

  • Gnomonkey finds it odd that Jagex tied demon tiers to runes for charging and thinks the staff should simply require tiers, but guesses they avoided that because players dislike the scythe requiring vials of blood.7
  • Gnomonkey thinks a good weapon used for DPS does not need a spec on top, and that dumping everything on one item is strange when the rewards could be split across different bosses like the blowpipe could have been.8
  • Gnomonkey says the three-tick speed makes the Eye awkward, for example for maging Vespula, because it takes four ticks to run in and out of the portal.9
  • Gnomonkey's main problem with the range of 6 is Ulm: on the melee safe-spot tile you cannot hit Ulm's mage hand with the Eye, and a solo Ulm would lose one or two ticks per mage cycle when dragging.10
  • Gnomonkey says the Eye is an uninspired 'scrambled egg' item and is strangely harder to use than the Sanguinesti staff, even though it is meant to be the mage Bofa equivalent that should be easy and forgiving.11
  • Gnomonkey says at the very least the Eye's range should be 7, which would solve many problems and let it be used on Ulm's mage hand, and he would like to see the spec removed.12
  • Gnomonkey likes the idea of a mage Bofa but is unsure that making the mage Bofa the Nylocas room killer through three-tick speed is the right design; a slower weapon might make more sense.12
  • Gnomonkey thinks the Eye as designed could be added and would not be horrible, but wants range and spec changes and thinks it is trying to fit into a weird slot.13
  • Gnomonkey says the Eye's spec is best on targets with roughly 20 to 50 magic defense; with very high magic defense like Zebak's 225 or very low defense like Akkha's it does little, because draining small amounts cannot go below zero.14
  • Gnomonkey says the Eye's spec typically beats a scepter spec and stacks with it, and at 50% spec energy you can now actually use both, which was not possible when it cost 100%.15
  • Gnomonkey is unsure how the Eye's spec works on Zalra, whose magic defense changes every time she changes form and who regens stats very fast, saying it could theoretically be good there but nobody knows.15
  • Gnomonkey says between five and seven bosses are good for the Eye's spec, which he calls a lot better than zero, and says it is not the best spec weapon ever but is the right spot for it.16

Events

  • Jagex describes the Eye of Ayak as a one-handed mage weapon with a rapid three-tick attack speed that speeds the grind towards the Tumeken's shadow and keeps giving utility afterwards, with DPS stated to be between the Sanguinesti staff and the shadow.17
  • The Eye of Ayak charges passively while in your inventory when defeating the Doom, uncharging returns what was put in, demon tiers are consumed before runes, and the staff is tradable when uncharged.18
