Requirements

  • Smoke devils require 93 Slayer and can only be fought on task, unlike Nechryael and dust devils.1
  • Requirements are the same as other burst tasks: minimum 70 Magic for Ice Burst, 94 Magic for Ice Barrage, and at least 40 Prayer because Protect from Missiles must be used at all times.1
  • The dungeon requires a face mask or slayer helmet at all times or it drains the player to one HP; the smoke cannot actually kill you.2

Methods

  • Set up the cannon on the red tile and fire it, then stand in the exact spot behind the skeleton to lure most devils to the opposite side.3
  • After the cannon finishes, walk to a tile on the other side of the skeleton to lure more devils, then click the original lure spot and then another exact tile to lure the final devils.3
  • From the final spot, cast on the middle pile; burst and barrage spells hit through the skeleton so all three piles are hit at once, but attacking from the other side does not hit nearby piles.4
  • While casting, use the time to pick up drops with the alt account; after killing all but two or three devils, fire the cannon for another full volley and repeat.4

Stats and numbers

  • Smoke devils have 1 Magic but 600 magic defence; magic level makes up 70% of a monster's defence and the defence bonus 30%, so players will splash a bit unlike other burst tasks.1
  • Gnomonkey kept wearing basic god robes and prayer boosting gear and hit 80k XP an hour on task; full best-in-slot magic gear would most likely raise the rate by 10 to 20k XP an hour.5
  • Gnomonkey received about 500k loot from 180 smoke devils; the loot is not as good as Nechryael so players typically break even or lose money, but the XP is by far worth the effort.6
  • Smoke devils can drop an occult necklace at a 1 in 512 rate, worth 600k at the time, which can help make up lost GP.6
  • Occult necklace drops from smoke devils help mitigate the cost a little.7

Tips

  • If an alt account lacks the 10 Slayer needed for the face mask, Gnomonkey recommends the gas mask from the Plague City quest, which also works; an alt could technically sit at 1 HP, but the text and hit splats are distracting.2
  • The dungeon allows a cannon, so Gnomonkey brings that instead of darts to tag the devils.2
  • Like all burst tasks, a lot of GP is missed without an alt; without one at least bring an Explorer's ring for alchs. Gnomonkey brings the same equipment as Nechryael tasks but needs runes only for ice spells since he takes zero damage.2
  • Smoke devils are always using ranged attacks, so they are not as simple to kill as Nechryael or dust devils, and auto-retaliate should be turned off to avoid messing up the stacks and wasting runes.8
  • The fastest way to the dungeon is fairy ring BKP; the Castle Wars teleport on a ring of dueling is also close, then run north from the ring or south from Castle Wars to reach the cave.8
  • Right-click the cave and choose smoke to disable the annoying smoke overlay the dungeon generates.8
  • Without an alt, use the time the cannon is firing to pick up the loot; Gnomonkey says smoke devils take a lot of practice compared with most Slayer tasks.4

Gnomonkey's opinion

  • Gnomonkey calls smoke devils the best Slayer task for XP in the game, period, though a task that can cost money to complete; they require some practice but can provide easily over 80k Slayer XP an hour.9
  • Gnomonkey says smoke devils are the best task for Slayer XP in the game, hitting over 90k Slayer XP an hour, though they are kind of expensive to burst since you use a cannon as well.7
  • Gnomonkey says the Thermonuclear smoke devil is pretty terrible for GP and XP unless you have something like a spec transfer alt with dragon claws, but it has a pet if you want it.7
