The Maiden of Sugadinti is the first boss of the Theatre of Blood and one of the harder rooms. Many of her attacks heal her, and the more she is healed the higher her max hit rises for all her attacks, so a bad room becomes a downward spiral and wipes are not uncommon if freezers are off1. Gnomonkey says he really likes her and thinks she may be the best boss of the Theatre, rating her high A tier, not quite S3. Her blood mechanic is annoying because the whole team is punished when one person messes up, but he considers it simple to dodge and says mages have the hardest role4.

Mechanics

  • Attacks. She stays on the west side of the room and throws basic magic attacks at the nearest player, with a chance to drain the stat of the combat style the target is using5. As soon as she begins her attack animation, who she targets and the damage are already decided; if two players share a tile next to her she attacks the one higher in the orb order5. If more than five Nylocas get through she can hit over 30 through prayer on every attack5.
  • Blood splats. She throws blood under everyone and on random tiles around one player. These damage players standing in them each tick and heal her for the same amount, hitting up to one tick after the animation when next to her. She will not throw blood again until at least three attacks have passed. At high healing they can hit in the thirties each tick6. With a scythe as DPS, the player must move every time she attacks (every 10 ticks) to avoid splats, which hit a tick after the animation begins2.
  • Blood spawns. Up to eight spawn randomly, with double spawn chance if someone steps in her thrown blood. They roam leaving a damaging blood trail that heals her like thrown blood7.
  • Nylocas. At 70%, 50% and 30% health she spawns two Nylocas per player (up to ten) that walk to her and heal her for their full remaining health on arrival; each has 200 health. The community labels them north 1 to 4 and south 1 to 4. The goal is to freeze them, in stacks where possible, then kill the final clump with ice barrages or chinchompas while others hit loose ones8.

Strategy

Setup

Gnomonkey starts in full melee gear with the Dragon warhammer spec ready, Piety and Protect from Magic on. BGS users attack with their main weapon until both hammer specs are dumped on her, then both BGS specs. It is efficient to BGS rather than hammer if two hammer hits landed9. If new to the room, switch to the blowpipe for the rest of the fight (removing prims) to give more time to react to blood; the two non-mages should constantly cast Vengeance on the tank and be ready to move whenever she throws blood10. Non-mages stand relatively close to tank hits while the South Mage, first in the party, takes the hits more than 50% of the time. At 75 to 80% the mages switch into mage gear, activate Augury and prepare Ice Barrage11.

A scythe is everyone's best DPS here; the DPS chart shows it beating all weapons regardless of her defence, with the blowpipe and Twisted bow fairly close, and a blowpipe with dragon darts overtaking the Twisted bow at 46 defence123. An easy improvement is to enter in full mage gear (or range gear with a Twisted bow) to fire one free Ice Barrage or bow shot, then switch to melee and hammer while running to her12.

Freezing the Nylocas

Freeze timing is very tight and missing freezes can wipe the team. Common learner mistakes are forgetting Augury or not equipping void gloves13. To avoid splashing the Nylocas the mage needs at least 55 magic attack bonus with Augury on and an avoid setup, reached by removing boots or using an offhand magic weapon like a Book of Darkness; boots on without an offhand can still reach 100% accuracy with an imbued heart boost but only if the player does not tank hits in mage gear14.

  • North Mage: freezes North 1, 2 and 3. North 1 and 2 are frozen outside the clump and North 3 falls within it. Casting barrage ahead on each next Nylocas works if the player clicked North 1 immediately; the window is three ticks, so if timing felt slow, skip 2s and make sure to freeze 3s in the clump15. He freezes a Nylocas twice if the 1s or 2s are missing and the first freeze was well timed, since it is free damage and helps get the 3s in the clump, then switches back to range gear to kill loose Nylocas outside the clump16.
  • South Mage: freezes South 1, 2 and 4. Freeze South 1 immediately, wait until South 2 is closer to freeze it (the 2s and 4s can be clumped on the south side), and freeze the 4s one step from the clump. Missing the four Nylocas clumped in the 4s heals her 800 and dramatically raises her max hit; missing 4s twice almost certainly wipes17.
  • Freeze earlier than you think rather than later. Once everything is frozen, the South Mage runs in front of her to tank and casts Blood Barrage on the clump to heal, or Ice Barrage if at full health since it does more damage18.
  • If a frozen Nylocas takes more than one step, the freeze was a tick off and the player must skip 2s to make up for it. If missing 1s or 2s, time the freeze on 3s so they freeze side by side instead of in a pile, as catching 3s and 4s still needs to be tick perfect19.
  • The ranged DPS throws chinchompas (medium fuse, four to six tiles away for maximum accuracy) at the clump as the South Mage freezes, communicating about whether more Blood Barrage healing is needed. The melee DPS stays on the boss and helps finish loose Nylocas20. A hard-mode-style approach is for mages to freeze the blood tick spawns near 70% while everyone scythes the boss3.
  • If there are more than four blood spawns he starts piping the blood spawns the mages have frozen. After the 30% Nylocas and spec regeneration, switch to melee gear and use a Crystal halberd or claw spec, then pick up food and move to Bloat equipping the salve21.

Team sizes

  • Trio: the machine gun (MG) method: the South Mage freezes every south Nylocas while the other two shoot N1 and N2 twice each with blowpipes, typically nearly or fully killing both. Tile indicators where South 1 spawns help freeze it instantly, but it is very hard for a South Mage with bad ping2223.
  • Four or five players: stacking, where two mages tick-perfect freeze while DPS drop claw specs and barrage the clump23.

Skipping the 30% Nylocas

With a scythe-heavy team, each player uses only one spec at the start to land two hammer specs and two decent BGS specs; the BGSer can throw an extra if hitting below about 40. In a trio the BGSer dumps both specs after two hammers land. Specs are kept so claws can be used later2. When the 30% Nylocas spawn, the mages freeze them all as fast as possible instead of clumping and everyone switches to melee, dumping claw specs. At about 8 to 10% health all four players dump Crystal halberd specs so she dies before any Nylocas arrive; if any get through, usually abort the skip24. A South Mage who freezes the first Nylocas quickly can tell the North Mage to freeze only North 1 and 2 and return to the boss while South freezes the rest, giving two extra scythe swings and a better chance of the skip25.

Solo hard mode

On a solo hard mode attempt in October 2023 the Dragon Warhammer RNG was bad, which he cites alongside misplays26. The room took around seven minutes in the successful run, which he says is unusually long and attributes to unlucky swings27. He says solo hard mode Maiden depends heavily on RNG, with something like a two in three chance of even getting through the room28.
