Main source Nex Guide (MASS/TEAMS) Money Making OSRS

Nex is the general of Zaros and the God Wars Dungeon boss that Gnomonkey treats as the best money-maker in Old School RuneScape. She fights in five phases, each tied to an Ancient Magicks spell, and her mechanics (the minion-gated phases, the special attacks, the virus, the ice prison) are built from pieces of other fights such as the Great Olm, the Nightmare and Verzik.11121314155

Gnomonkey knew the boss from RuneScape 2, where she was the hardest and most profitable boss of her day, and had campaigned for her to be brought to Old School.1617 He first covered the Old School version before release (November 2021), then recorded a full guide at release (January 2022). He moved on to team strategy, a duo guide (2023–2024), solo Nex (2024), mage Nex (2025) and the 2025 and 2026 combat changes.1101819202122

His overall verdict has been consistent on money and variable on depth. He called Nex the best money in the game from August 2022 onwards, and says duo Nex has been the best gp/hr in the game since release.2324184 On depth, he called her "high A tier" in March 2022, said in October 2022 that she lacks the depth of any raid, and said in July 2023 that he had come around to her. By January 2025 he described her as a "boss plus" (one step above a boss, not a raid).25242627 In May 2026 he said he no longer does Nex because of the 2025 melee change.28

Requirements and access

Quest and stats

Access to Nex's dungeon requires the miniquest The Frozen Door, which needs Desert Treasure and a message delivered by an NPC, similar to the start of Regicide.1 The miniquest requires feeding each God Wars Dungeon boss for its key piece (or killing their minions for a 1 in 5 chance of the fragment), which in practice means 70 Hitpoints, Ranged, Strength and Agility to reach Nex.2

Gnomonkey's stat advice (January 2022) is as follows.2

  • In masses, Nex can be killed with as little as 80 Ranged.
  • In smaller groups, as high a Ranged level as possible is wanted, ideally in the 90s.
  • High Prayer helps because more prayer points per restore dose lets players stay longer.
  • High Agility avoids the need for stamina potions.
  • High melee stats help for Dragon warhammer and Bandos godsword specs.

The starter cache is a separate requirement. He says roughly 200 million gp is needed for duo Nex, that it is not easy, and that players should not go too early (June 2024).4 The bare minimum gear he gives (2023) is a Fang, an Armadyl crossbow and Karil's armour, which makes Nex doable with a low bank value but very challenging.1829 He says Nex is a good next money-maker after the early bosses, with low gear requirements, and that learner teams of three to five make the best money in the game, even for a newer player (July 2024).30

Kill count and the lobby

Nex uses a kill count like the other God Wars bosses, with Ancient added to the God Wars kill count interface. An ancient item must be equipped in the room outside Nex to avoid the aggression of the Ancient enemies there.31 For kill count at release he recommended killing spiritual mages, or Blood Reavers if you do not have the Spirit level, since each gives the most kill count.32 He dislikes the time this costs, saying he has to spend about ten minutes on kill count each time he considers Nex. He says a ten million coin skip should return, remembering that in RuneScape 2 full ancestral gave instant full kill count, though he thinks the current system "maybe works a little better" apart from the run back after each kill.3334

Combat achievements shorten the process. A player can AFK kill count before a trip but loses it on death. With the Grandmaster combat achievements, a player only needs to walk into the room with a fake 15 Ancient kill count, and in a duo each player always gets 15, so no kill count is needed.35

After kill count there is a lobby with a bank right before Nex, so players can gear as they please.31 Nex's room has an altar like those of the other God Wars generals. It restores prayer every 10 minutes and teleports the player outside the boss room next to the bank; with an ancient item equipped it also restores special attack, run energy and health, and it can be used between kills.36 Dying keeps items in a chest in the lobby before the kill count room and in the room before Nex with the bank. Reclaiming costs 100k, and everything is lost if the player dies before getting back there.36

Groups and instances

Up to 60 players can fight Nex at once on a world. Group instances, added shortly before January 2022, allow a team of any size as long as at least one member has completed the hard combat achievements.1 To start a private fight, the instance owner pays for the instance and the others right-click the door, choose enter private and type the leader's username.37 The instance cost is taken from Death's Coffer first, which rewards players who hoarded blood essence when Nex came out.38 Free-for-all World 420 is the Nex world (World 416 is the equivalent for Theatre of Blood).39 Before entering the gate he pre-pots Divine super ranging, shark and angler, antidote and stamina.37

The fight

Basic mechanics

  • Attack speed. Nex is a four-tick boss and attacks every four ticks.40 In each phase she almost always opens with a special attack and then performs five regular attacks before the next special. Attacks are calculated when she fires them in every phase except Shadow, where the damage is calculated when they hit.41 (Gnomonkey also describes the Fear the Shadow damage as calculated just before the projectile appears to hit you.42)
  • Minion gates. At the start of the fight, and at every phase transition, Nex is powered by the phase's minion and cannot be damaged until the minion's projectile reaches her, so players should not spam click.43 In each of the first four phases the player damages her to a threshold, the minion becomes vulnerable and she is invincible until it dies.6 If the threshold is reached by thrall damage alone she stays invincible and will not let the player hit the minion until she has made one more attack, even if that attack hits a zero.44
  • Minions. The minions (bodyguards) have 200 Magic and the twisted bow is best against them. Each has a weakness (stab, ranged, slash or crush) but the twisted bow is almost always the best option.45 When vulnerable they use accurate area ancient burst spells with a max hit of 29, but a player praying Protect from Magic is completely safe from them.45 In April 2022 he gave Umbra's max hit as 28 and called her fairly accurate.46
  • Targeting. Nex swaps targets every three attacks according to January 2022 notes, picking the farthest player within range, or the player with the lowest magic defence if everyone is equally far.47 Later notes put the swap earlier. In May 2023 she swaps typically every two attacks but cannot pick the same person twice in a row; in July 2023 she typically does three attacks and then switches, though she can pick the same player twice; and in June 2024 she usually attacks about twice per target in each phase, but about four times in the final phase, with neither guaranteed.484950
  • Melee mode. At any point Nex can enter melee mode and chase her target.47 When a player is far from Nex while she is attacking someone else, she has a chance to stop what she is doing and run up to punch the player.51 When everyone is in melee range she typically melees, with a roughly 20% chance of using magic instead, though in the January 2022 notes it looked like a 50-50 chance between melee and a major target attack.4740
  • Range. Nex has a 10-tile range, which with her in the centre of the room ends exactly at the lines from the corners of all the minions. A player outside her range cannot be chosen as her target and takes no damage from her.52 If she cannot attack her target she dashes to the centre of the room and switches target.47 Nex will not swap targets if she cannot see someone who is out of range.53
  • Vulnerability. Vulnerability cannot be recast on Nex after it has landed; it can only be recast once her defence is full again.54 At launch her stats could not be examined, and Gnomonkey inferred that she has 230 Magic through most of the fight, because the twisted bow max hit is 70 without Zaryte vambraces and 72 with them. Her defence can be lowered and is not regained until the end of the fight.32

Phase 1: Smoke

Nex starts the fight with a very long wind-up and swaps target after about two attacks.65 She opens with a virus on someone. The three smoke specials are as follows.

  • Virus. Nex shouts "Let the virus flow through you" and infects one player. The choice depends on magic defence and proximity. The virus rapidly drains prayer points and the main attack style stat, spreads to players within one tile of the infected player, resets its timer on each spread, and can last the whole kill. A gas mask, face mask or slayer helmet shortens its duration.43 While stats are drained, crossbow Nex and drink brew, because ruby bolts hit the same regardless of stats, then run up and use the blowpipe on the minion.66
  • Dash ("There is no escape"). Nex faces one of four corridors, shouts and charges down it, dashing in the direction she is facing for about 50. It only catches a player on the first check when she shouts, and once she charges the player can run through her, so the player should run in a direction she is not facing.5667
  • Choke (passive). She grabs random nearby players, drags them to her and toggles their protection prayers off. This is dangerous if combined with a melee hit and the minion at the same time.56

When Nex reaches 2,720 HP, Fumus in the north-west corner becomes vulnerable and must be killed. He can poison with smoke spells.55

Phase 2: Shadow

Nex's ranged projectiles are proximity-based. They can hit as low as zero if the player is outside the 10-tile range of the twisted bow when they land and has Protect from Missiles up.57 In duo play the hits are between one and three damage, and the further away the player is when the attack lands, the less damage taken, so players flinch crossbow shots.68

  • Fear the Shadow puts shadows under random players that hit for roughly 50 if they do not move in time.57 It simply requires not standing on the marked tile.42
  • Embrace Darkness darkens the screen the closer the player is to Nex, dealing 10 to 20 rapidly if the player stays close.57 It can kill a player if Nex enters melee mode on them, since she hits for 20s repeatedly.69 Nex performs it after a successful virus, and she cannot really be meleed during it without some cheese.70

At 2,040 HP, Umbra in the north-east corner becomes vulnerable. She lowers the player's attack level with shadow spells and is by far the most dangerous minion: the player prays Protect from Missiles for Nex, but Umbra's damage is magic.58 Gnomonkey says players commonly die in Shadow from messing up the reset (see Resets below), and calls Umbra the most dangerous part of the fight where resets must not be missed.7172 In the Umbra phase the magic attack always hits, so magic prayer stays up the whole time.73

Phase 3: Blood

Nex uses a unique single-target area bloodburst attack, usually opens with "Siphon will solve this" (any damage dealt to her then heals her), and spawns Blood Reavers, with their number scaling with the players in the room.59 Reavers attack with magic and heal Nex for the damage they would have dealt. They move at half a tile per tick, so they can be avoided by leaving their range. If they are not killed by the next set they die and heal Nex for their remaining HP.59 In Gnomonkey's later notes a dying Reaver heals Nex for its remaining health times three, and Reavers heal about 150 health.74 A single Reaver heal, a blood sacrifice and extra attacks cost his team several brews in the June 2024 demonstration.75

  • Blood sacrifice ("I demand a blood sacrifice"). A random, usually nearby, player turns red. If they do not get at least 7 tiles from Nex (he later says about six), she hits them for about 30 and nearby players for damage in the tens, and heals for the damage dealt.6076
  • Healing from damage. Because her area attacks heal her, players should not stack.77

At 1,360 HP, Kruor in the south-east corner becomes vulnerable. He attacks with Bloodburst and heals for the damage he would have dealt, while Nex keeps using specials and can heal significantly while the minion is attacked.60 Gnomonkey calls the third phase by far the longest and says Nex has several healing attacks in it, so the phase must end quickly.7878 Because the blood phase is single target, it is one of the few phases in which players can trade supplies or use the altar.79

Phase 4: Ice

All of Nex's auto attacks drain significant prayer and can freeze a player who gets smited.61 A magic hit that lands off-prayer freezes the player in place for a huge amount of time.80

  • Contain This shoots icicles in a square around Nex. Anyone under her or in the icicles has protection prayers toggled off and is hit for around 50, but prayer can be turned back on immediately, and a player can die quickly if they forget.61 A player who gets out of range sees Nex just sit there, avoiding a lot of damage.81
  • Die Now (ice prison) traps a random player in range in a square of icicles, toggling their protection prayer off and stunning them. Unless another player breaks an outer icicle with a crush weapon, the trapped player takes 80. Gnomonkey calls it her most dangerous special and nearly always fatal if the victim is far from the group.63 Breaking an icicle can fail if the weapon's crush bonus is too low, and even a godsword on crush is not guaranteed. He has never failed with a Dragon warhammer. Players can spam click to retry every tick, and even unarmed combat counts as crush. The freed player is 100% safe and can attack immediately.82 In the duo version he melees one of the stalagmites with the Fang and it frees everyone, so the player does not need to run out of the middle.80

At 680 HP, Glacies in the south-west becomes vulnerable. He uses Ice Burst and can freeze players through protection prayers. Standing under Nex is dangerous because Contain This can freeze players there unavoidably.62

Phase 5: Zaros

In the final phase Nex instantly heals 500 HP, activates Turmoil and Soul Split, and no longer uses special attacks, but her max hits ramp up dramatically. Soul Split heals her for the damage dealt to everyone, and Turmoil makes her melee nastier and drains the target's stats.62 Her defence seems to rise the more melee she lands.83

Her prayer cycle changes every four attacks. The two sources give different orders.

  • January 2022: Soul Split first, then Deflect Melee (like Protect from Melee but reflecting damage), then no prayer, repeating.83
  • June 2024: four attacks with no prayer, then four with Deflect Melee, then four with Soul Split, repeating.64

Deflect Melee blocks all melee damage and reflects 50% back at the attacker, so players swap to a crossbow while it is up. Soul Split heals her for about 50% of the damage she deals.84 With no prayer active she leeches stats on each successful melee attack, which Gnomonkey says is not something players react to.85 If many players melee, the twisted bow's max hit can rise to 75 with Zaryte vambraces.83

She hits really hard and mages more often than in other phases, though he notes there is no information confirming this.86 In January 2022 he said it is ideal for the team to enter melee range, because her magic attacks hit incredibly hard even through prayer while melee only hits the targeted player. His advice then was to pray melee if she targets you and magic otherwise, since melee seems more common. In masses, people spam "MD" (melee distance) or "DD" (death dot) for this reason.87 Players should never drop below 30 health in the final phase because she can kill in melee; he later gives the melee max as 15, so below 30 health is safe against melee when praying melee, and magic can be tick eaten. The June 2024 advice gives the minimum as 15.888990 Ranging in this phase is a good time to brew.91 The crossbow must hit for four hits while Deflect Melee is up, and he calls this the hardest part of the fight.92 He says to pray melee any time Nex is attacking in this phase because she heavily weights melee.92 After the 2025 and 2026 changes (see below), he says to pray melee the whole time and catch the occasional mage prayer.28

Resets, step-unders and stalling

Nex's normal attack timer is four ticks and a player's is five, so "five-ticking" forces her to attack every five ticks without losing DPS and the player takes far less damage. Gnomonkey calls this the biggest thing for duo Nex.93 A step under every fifth tick makes her attack a tick slower than her normal four-tick attack, so she hits less.94 To tick walk when Nex chases, the player clicks under the centre of her tile every tick.95 He says it takes about 10 to 15 kills to learn five-ticking and the rest of the mechanics.96 After the 2025 melee change he notes that an intentional six-tick step-under gives her about a 95% chance to do another set of free melees.97

A reset is when one player steps out of Nex's range so she can only hit the other, then returns to the minion.98 For easy reset tiles, he marks red tiles everywhere and waits for Nex to run past the lip.99 Failing resets gets a player killed in phase 2 as Nex "lawnmowers" them, and a mistimed reset at Nex is what makes her hard.99100 If Nex enters melee mode, his team goes under her to reset her to the middle.69 At a phase transition, Nex keeps running up and the reset timer starts over, so players likely need to tick walk under her again.101 When she follows a player in phase 2, turning the corner by running to a spot and back in breaks her out of the damage and lets the player reset.102

His team's use of range and positioning (April 2022) is what he calls the mechanic people ignore by ranging the boss "with their brain off".103 His main tools are the following.

  • He abuses the 10-tile range throughout, and all his phase 2 safety techs revolve around keeping Nex in the centre of the room and away from Umbra.52
  • He dislikes Embrace Darkness' guaranteed death, so his team uses techs to avoid it in the order they come up in the fight.104
  • Stalling or zoning works in any phase. Whenever Nex is being dragged, or the player stands under her, she is not attacking, so doing this without losing ticks saves supplies and trip length.105
  • While attacking Kruor/Glacies minions the tank thinks about how to drag or stall. The goal is to end the phase with Nex near the player but stalled as much as possible, and not to reset her to the centre if the minion is about to die.106 If a minion phase has only just started, resetting Nex is correct because dragging can begin again immediately.106
  • A Blood Reaver that spawns near or under Nex can be attacked from under her, losing no DPS.107
  • During Contain This, a tank outside range means Nex does not attack until it ends and then dashes up, which near the end of Glacies' HP lets the player dash an "X" right next to them for the start of the final phase.107
  • He tried a follow stall (the tank follows a teammate to stop Nex moving, like the old red click door stall) and found it not worth it: it wastes a lot of DPS, risks Nex dashing around the room, and slowed his team's kill time without usually squeezing out an extra kill.108
  • When directly under Nex, projectiles hit instantly with no travel time, so they cannot be flicked.109

Prayer

Gnomonkey's prayer approach is to pray melee while Nex is attacking the player and magic when she is not, which blocks the majority of damage, similar to Ulm.40 He calls catching prayers correctly the next biggest learning curve after five-ticking, and says that if you cannot pray magic the whole time you will die.110 Because the ranged attack is calculated a tick later, a player can pray melee and then use ranged between attacks to get the melee prayer off.111 On the phase 2 setup, he says to pray magic if forced to take ranged autos, because Umbra is a lot more dangerous.112 In the blood phase he prays magic throughout because her magic attack is guaranteed to hit and the melee is not, and her melee heals her by the full amount.113 He also says to scan in melee range in some phases to reduce damage taken, clicking melee prayer right after the damage, because Nex maxes four with melee attacks.114 Nex's ranged attack has a believed base max hit of 60 that scales down to 50 when close, and hits can reach a full 25 but can also be blocked fully, which is why Torva matters.115

Strategy by group size

Masses

Masses are the easiest way into Nex. In January 2022 he said they seem to be worse money but much easier to get into.5 By May 2023 he called mass Nex "really bad" compared with duo Nex.7 The name of the game is to deal the most damage to secure MVP and thus the best chance at the rare drop. He is certain damage on minions counts toward MVP and likely damage on Blood Reavers too.116

  • Zaryte crossbow. For masses, the best brain-dead method is a Zaryte crossbow with a Twisted buckler or Spectral spirit shield, which is 5–9% better DPS than the twisted bow, has a chance to snipe MVP with ruby procs, and doubles as the best special attack option.117 The routine is to shoot Nex, shoot minions, drop specs on Nex when available, and repeat until dead.118 A budget option is the Armadyl crossbow, which beats the twisted bow by about 2% and the Dragon crossbow by 1%. In large masses of 15 or more, he thinks the crossbow is the best shot at MVP.117
  • Melee-and-bow switching. In smaller masses (around 10) he uses the same setup as at very low scale: a rapier, Torva helmet, Ferocious gloves, Berserker ring and blood fury. He says the Torva helmet gives a max hit over a Neitiznot faceguard even with only a fire cape.119 This melee-and-twisted-bow setup beats the Zaryte crossbow with buckler by roughly 27%. Full Torva with an amulet of torture and a six-way ranged switch to Armadyl raises the twisted bow max hit from 52 to 55 and beats the Zaryte crossbow by just under 37%.120 The Torva helmet is a Zaros item, so you cannot forget to switch it for the last phase. With no one else meleeing in a small mass this nearly guarantees MVP on every kill, but it breaks down in large masses because Nex dies too quickly and Zaryte crossbows take MVP often through bolt procs.120
  • Virus. In masses, look for a world with a virus tank or a low enough population to avoid the virus. Otherwise everyone ends up infected ("cough kills"). Virus tanks stand diagonally from a minion and strip their armour or wear melee armour so they are guaranteed the virus, quarantining it.116

Small groups (three to ten)

For groups of 10 or fewer who communicate (six being a sweet spot), he uses the same melee-and-bow setup with varying numbers of super combats and ranging potions. In a 4-man he drops one super combat, and blood fury helps with supplies because it uses significantly less brew than full melee armour.121 One player bringing a hammer is probably worth it (multiple made no difference in his testing), while the Zaryte crossbow is a better spec but needs a bolt switch and the twisted bow is too good to leave behind for minion damage.12138 Everyone else drops a single claw spec to start the special meter regenerating.38 Small teams take a hexagonal position around Nex to guarantee no spread of the virus, using all six tiles.38

His phase-by-phase small-team routine (January 2022):

  • Smoke. Count Nex's attacks: after 5 autos she dashes, so be ready to click perpendicular to your position. Start moving to Fumus when Nex is under 2,800 HP, sending a twisted bow shot while running. Do not group up, because another virus comes shortly.122
  • Shadow. Lure Nex far from Umbra with a "babysitter" who keeps her aggro, and never go near Umbra early because Nex can dash there. At 2,040 HP the first player into Umbra's range takes her aggro, prays Magic and runs next to her, while the others tuck close to Umbra and the babysitter pulls Nex as far away as possible.123 If Nex is dragged next to the Umbra tank, that player should pray ranged and immediately run to safety. Flicking magic and ranged is very dangerous because the projectiles are on different tick cycles.124
  • Blood. Avoid shooting Nex until the special is seen, hit each Reaver once (with a claw spec if available), return to Nex, and elect a janitor to clean up leftover Reavers. Count attacks after a blood sacrifice so you move away before the fifth attack.77 If Kruor can be killed before Nex's next siphon, kill Kruor instead of the Reavers since they die without healing Nex.79
  • Ice. Stay relatively close so a player in an ice prison can be freed. On Contain This, hit once more with the rapier, back off, send two twisted bow shots and return. If trapped, put prayer back on immediately because attacks are calculated when fired, and spam click Nex so the player attacks on release. Avoid Glacies' target, and stay out from under Nex at 680 HP.125
  • Final phase. Wait until Nex lowers her hands to attack, rapier as much as possible and pray melee if she targets you. She is much tankier here. Count four attacks, switch to ranged after the fourth since she then puts up Deflect Melee, do three twisted bow shots, then switch back.126

Small groups produce more loot than masses: usually double to quadruple what she drops in masses, with 4 to 6 minute kills. Gnomonkey says this is more efficient than a 30-man team getting 2-minute kills but needs more effort and coordination.127 Between kills the team hits the altar for full restoration. He figures each player needs at least four brews (or equivalent sharks) and four restores for another kill, and teams should communicate and trade supplies. Longer trips give more kill count and a faster return to the next trip.128 The goal of a trip is 40 kill count before banking, which he says is always doable in a six-man regardless of supply drops, thanks to the tankiness of Torva-style melee gear plus the healing of blood fury, even with inventory slots lost to switches.129

Learner groups can start with a trio, which he says is very similar but much easier, and he recommends moving down from trio to duo as the mechanics become comfortable.130 Duos, however, are always the best money for Nex, better than trios, "no matter what".3

Duo

The duo is where most of Gnomonkey's later guidance lies. He calls duo Nex the most difficult PvM encounter outside raids and Inferno (May 2023).18 A duo opens by standing opposite each other, which makes it easy to rotate up to the minion; the team dumps all their specs and summons a thrall.65 Thralls are a must in budget play, since her defence is so high and thralls punch straight through it. He calls Nex probably the most important place in the game to have thralls.29131

Budget setup (July 2023). The description's bare minimum is a Fang, Armadyl crossbow and Karil's, along with completion of the Kandarin hard diary for the increased bolt chance.1829 In a duo with poor gear, one player has to stay far away and crossbow to reset Nex: every time she runs up, he resets her by stepping under and she goes back, while the other pipes (uses the blowpipe).132 With a Twisted bow, a player can run back and forth hitting and resetting repeatedly, but without a ranged weapon this loses DPS.133 Torva is "really good" for Nex because it allows meleeing in the distance-based phase, which cannot be tanked without it.134

Brewing. The best time to brew is while crossbowing, since it does not affect bolt proc chance, whereas brewing while fanging hurts DPS a lot.135 He says the big mistake from learners is not brewing as quickly as possible, sitting five ticks to brew, forgetting the brew-down and attacking about 20 seconds unpotted, so the routine is "brew, brew, brew, restore, pot every time".136 He says to always brew while ranging and try to avoid brewing while meleeing.137 In the ice phase, heal enough while ranging and during Contain This that no further healing is needed until the next Contain This.138

Phase notes (duo).

  • Smoke. In the first phase, pray melee when Nex targets you and mage when she switches to your partner.49 Gnomonkey melees at the start, then runs up and kills Fumus with the Twisted bow, or Zaryte crossbows Fumus while brewing. He aims to be at full health before killing Fumus because he runs into melee for phase 2 immediately after.139140
  • Shadow. Before starting melee in phase 2 Nex should have just used the dash as her last attack, otherwise she will use Embrace Darkness and the player dies.141 In phase 2, flick melee prayer then ranged prayer to catch all melee and ranged attacks. Once she does Embrace Darkness, get out of range.102 If she did her dash last, she always follows with Fear the Shadow.95 One player, the Umbra tank, gets out of range and goes up to Umbra praying mage because Umbra hits 29s against Protect from Missiles. The other resets Nex repeatedly while crossbowing.142 The Umbra tank is kept in Nex's sights while the other, out of range, kills Umbra with the blowpipe, which is dramatically better against her.143 To reset Nex here, let her touch you and drag her as close to the altar as possible, wearing bracers to hit the altar.144 Gnomonkey notes tbow camping on phase 2 is painful but seems the best option unless something new is discovered.145
  • Blood. Kill Reavers as fast as possible, because they heal each time they hit; the only exception is when killing Kruor, so that he will not heal her.146147 He skips the Reaver only when Kruor can be killed before another Reaver is summoned.148 With a Twisted bow he and his partner Hedron can usually skip the Reaver and use step-unders while shooting Kruor to keep Nex stalled.149 He hits Kruor to regain special attack energy, saying the health impair is nice but the spec back is the real reason.74 He drags Nex up to him as much as possible in this phase, since that is time she is not attacking.150 A good time to dump all specs, let health drop low, run to the altar and dump more specs is the third phase.78 He usually has the altar available at phase 3 on each duo kill unless the kills are very fast.149
  • Ice. When Contain This lands, step away and use it to spam brew and range, because brewing while ranging with rubies loses very little DPS compared with brewing in melee.150 Both players should get out of range and let her dash back up. They should not drag her, and should not reset her if close to killing Glacies because they want her next to them to avoid some damage.151152153 Contain carries over into the next phase, so do not just run in. Without a Twisted bow the player must tank, and with one they can avoid a lot of damage.154 Players should not be on top of each other when Ice Prison happens.155
  • Final phase. At about Nex's 300 health mark, he switches from the Zaryte crossbow to the Twisted bow and drops the ZCB or a Void Waker. Getting gear switches done quickly just takes practice.156
  • Close of the kill. End the kill with the last hit while death charge is active: Nex gives a death charge, and the player starts the next kill with more special attack.137157

Flinching. To flinch Nex, step out of range, swap to the Twisted bow for its longer range, stay one tile in, and click her each time she attacks. If a partner misses by five ticks the player must reset the cycle, and if Nex gets on a player while flinching, the kill is over.158 In the phase where damage depends on distance, he flinches in and out every five ticks with the ACB and calls this the slowest, worst part of the fight.159

Times. A kill in budget gear took 9 minutes 54 seconds, versus an average of about 7 minutes 30 seconds in max gear. For learners he suggests assuming about 12 minutes per kill including gearing time.160 A typical max-gear duo kill is about 7:30 (730 on the timer), with the fastest about 6:30 and slow kills about nine minutes.35 He says getting hit as hard as in his bad example kill is a roughly one-in-30 kill and the player should play for the average.161

Progression. His duo partner Hedron started with a 700 million bank, Karil's and a Zaryte crossbow, and after about six months of one or two hours a few times a week was in full Torva with a Twisted bow and Zaryte crossbow (max Nex gear).162 At the highest-scaling duo he says one can easily make 20 million gp per hour and have all the gear wanted for every raid within a few months.163 The faster drop rate lets a player buy upgrades progressively rather than using poor gear until a Shadow drop, and the complex switches prepare players for Theatre of Blood.164 He considers focusing on killing Nex as fast as possible usually the best way to build an account.4 Nex was relatively recently (June 2024) changed so she is weaker to crossbows than other weapons, and he says range accuracy is extremely good against her, so an accurate ranged weapon is a large DPS increase.165165

Solo

Solo Nex became possible thanks to over a year of lab work by Saxerpillar. The final hurdles were max distance resets, blood sacrifice and ice prison tick eats, plus figuring out to tank through Glacies.1919 Gnomonkey says it can be done 100% consistently and plans to speedrun it.19 He rates it roughly equal in difficulty to a normal solo Theatre of Blood, and later says it is on par because it demands perfect control of movement and reacting to Nex's random movements.198

  • In the speedrun he restores stats at an altar before fighting Nex.166 Most of the supplies used over the whole kill go to minions, because he cannot tick-eat while also killing them.166 The 26:30 run took 106 sweets, with many more used on attempts, and dragon arrows were used up on the failed attempts.19
  • By February 2024 he said his solo setup is as refined as it can get, with the optimal amount of brew and restore, and that a ZCB or extra switches are not worth the inventory slots.145 He considers a dragon dagger better than claws, with a special max of 110 against about 80 for the Voidwaker.167167
  • The hardest part is tick eating perfectly and adapting to weird distance dashes.145 In the final phase, anything that avoids starting tick eating is very good.8 A low roll of 25 on the ice prison is "pretty low", and Glacies died quickly in the sub-20 kill.168
  • He credits the advice "don't die" for the sub-20 time and notes that phase 2 was slow but phases 3 and 4 were very fast.8

Gnomonkey says solo Nex is absolutely not worth it for gp, although it is still somewhat profitable (January 2024), and is still over 10m gp/hr even with sweet usage, assuming consistent kill count (February 2024).19145 At that time no one had received a solo Nex drop and he wanted to be the first, which is why he kept going for kill count.169 He thinks sub-19 is definitely possible but rare, and sub-18 probably technically possible but would be about the end of the line.8

Mage Nex (2025)

In March 2025 Gnomonkey killed Nex with the Tumeken's shadow in max mage gear to show it is viable, and finished the kill with four brews to spare.20170 He says it is similar in difficulty to a mixed hide kill count, and anyone who can do a mixed hide kill can do a shadow kill.20171 Shadow is not good "right now" and not a budget option.172 He did not leave Protect from Missiles on throughout, because in mage gear Nex's 15 ranged defence "just kills you".173 Phase five is where shadow struggles because Nex drains the magic level, but shadow keeps working past the 500 health mark where the Zaryte crossbow cannot normally be used.174

He calculated the shadow as 13% worse DPS than the Zaryte crossbow with Forgotten brew, and 11.7% worse without the Venator bow.175 With the new boots but without the gauntlets' double accuracy passive, shadow is only slightly worse than the Zaryte crossbow. With the passive, accuracy rises by over 10% and shadow becomes about 11% better than the Zaryte crossbow.176 He said shadow would not be better than range until the update he said was coming in the summer, and expects about 20% more DPS after the Mokha update.172177 His post-update plan is max melee with the Fang for melee phases and the shadow for mage phases, rather than bringing the Zaryte crossbow, which would also be an 8-way setup. He says not having to do the 9-way (a 10-way is obnoxious) would be nice.174178

Updates and changes

Combat changes (2025 and 2026)

In May 2025 Gnomonkey reported the following changes. Damage dealt to Blood Reavers now heals the player at Nex. When Nex melees a player she is guaranteed to melee two more times, and players can now catch magic prayer in the last phase by predicting her attacks. He said these changes should cut Nex's damage dramatically and mean it is no longer a "breach hugging simulator".212121

In May 2026, describing the previous Summer Sweep-up, he states that Blood Reavers heal the player for the full damage dealt to them, Nex can be damaged between phases, and mage attacks in the last phase can be prayed if the prayer is up in time.22 The change also made Nex melee three times minimum in a set before resuming magic, intended to reduce damage and align her with another boss's design.179 Nex remembers her melee count between phase transitions and special attacks, and if a set of three melees is interrupted by a mage she will run up later for one or two more.97 Against the new Nex he advises pre-meleeing a lot more than before.180

Gnomonkey despises the melee change, calling it an insane amount of complexity that is not worth bothering with because it saves only a little mage damage. He enjoyed Nex before the update, no longer does it, and would like Jagex to revert the melee change while keeping the rest, which he calls solid.18128

Drop rate

At release the rare drops were 1 out of 53 from any given Nex kill.9 In April 2022 Jagex reverted a nerf to Nex's drop rate, back down to 1/43 for any drop, which raised her gp/hr even higher than before even though most individual drops went down slightly (the Zaryte crossbow excepted).10 Later claims keep to 1 in 43 for a "CA purple".182163

The RuneScape 3 version and the 2021 preview

Before release (November 2021) Gnomonkey described the RuneScape 2 fight and predicted what Old School would copy. Many details in that version differ from the Old School release that he later describes, as follows.

  • History. Nex was the most difficult God Wars Dungeon boss added in RuneScape 2 and by far the most profitable and difficult boss at release. She dropped new best-in-slot armour for every style plus a powerful wand and bow, and Torva platebody fetched over 600 million gp after release and Pernix body over 800 million.1616 She needed the best items available and large teams, and was completely unsolo-able for months.16 Each phase represents an Ancient Magicks spell (smoke, shadow, blood, ice) before a final phase in which she activated Turmoil and Soul Split.11 People mainly used ranged, but roughly a year after release she was updated to randomly use Deflect Ranged in any phase, which protected her from ranged damage and deflected some back, so a melee switch was needed.183184
  • Stats. RS2 Nex had the Old School equivalent of 3,000 health, auto melee attacks with a max hit of 36, and many special attacks hitting over 70.11 She used a magic attack that hit everyone in the room and chose a tank based on range defence to hit with single-target melee attacks, so it was often optimal to end within melee range.185 Her special attacks were always used in the same order, often after a certain number of attacks in each phase, like Verzik's third phase.12
  • Phases. Lowering her HP to a threshold made that phase's bodyguard vulnerable, with four bodyguards in the room corners, and it had to be killed before the next phase, like the Nightmare's pillars.185 The smoke phase used a smoke rush attack that poisons everyone in the room, so he expected Sanfew serums to see a lot of use.12 The shadow phase's Shadow Rush drains prayer on hit and is magic but counts as ranged damage, the one phase where you pray ranged instead of magic.14 In the blood phase, Blood Blitz autos healed her for damage dealt, similar to Verzik phase 2 after 35% health.186 Her health carried over between phases, so players often had to do about two phases' worth of health.187 Gnomonkey said the blood phase is what makes it incredibly hard to kill Nex solo or in small groups.186
  • Specials in that version. The virus drained stats and prayer and was verbatim the Great Olm's burn attack ("Let the virus flow through you"); the dash was almost exactly the Nightmare's surge, with damage dealt to her nullified while dashing; the drag disabled prayers and stunned the victim.121314 The shadow specials "Fear the Shadow" (shadows under every player, like the Nightmare's Grasp and Claws) and "Embrace Darkness" (constant damage within melee range, wearing off only after ten to fifteen seconds out of range).14188 In the blood phase Blood Siphon summoned two Reavers (attacking Nex then healed her for 100% of the damage) and the blood sacrifice sapped 10% of HP, healed Nex for 10 times the damage, and halved all other players' prayer points like Olm prayer orbs.186187 Gnomonkey said in the blood phase you want to keep prayer points relatively low.187
  • Ice phase in that version. Her autos froze you unless prayed against and drained prayer, so it was common to get smited and frozen. The Ice Prison ("Die now") trapped and stunned a player, disabled prayers and, if not freed, dealt 60 to 80, extremely similar to the Great Olm's firewall. "Contain this" blasted icicles diagonally for roughly 35, froze and disabled prayers.1515189
  • Final phase. The final phase had no special attacks but buffed every regular attack. She healed roughly one sixth of her health and activated Turmoil and Soul Split. Turmoil transferred stats like the Inferno bats. She randomly activated Deflect Melee and, more rarely, Deflect Magic or Ranged, and her melee hit anyone in front of her in a 3x3 square.190191191 The tank would often use a staff of light special attack to negate some of the massive melee damage.192 On death she shouted "Taste my wrath" and exploded in a huge area.192
  • Drops and the room. Drops went to the player who dealt the most damage and the room could be left only by teleporting out or dying. Gnomonkey predicted Old School would give everyone their own drop like the Nightmare, possibly with an MVP mechanic.192 About a third of RS2 kills dropped a huge pile of brews and restores.193
  • Predicted drops. He predicted Zaryte vambraces (+2 ranged strength, not her best drop), a Zaryte crossbow (+110 ranged attack, a passive adding 10% to bolt proc effectiveness, and a 75% special that guarantees a proc), the ancient godsword hilt, and blood essence.194195196197 He was underwhelmed by the Zaryte crossbow and hoped it would be adjusted after release, and said the ancient godsword hilt was the only reward he voted no to, with a 50% special for double accuracy and 10% extra damage, and a 25 hit plus heal if the target does not move 5 tiles in 8 ticks.196196 He saw no PvM use because the Saradomin godsword is always better on average and expected it to be her least valuable drop.197197 He hoped the Turmoil and Soul Split phase would reach Old School.191

Drops and rewards

Nex's loot is distributed by damage dealt, with the MVP of the kill getting 10% extra loot. She often drops supplies such as brews, restores, sharks and prayer potions, which extend the trip dramatically.87 The regular drops are also good, especially onyx bolts, which can be a lot of money.9 Dragon and onyx bolts and blood essence appear in regular loot.198

Drop Notes Value (Jan 2022)
Zaryte vambraces Most common unique. Straight upgrade to Barrows gloves: 2 Ranged strength, 18 Ranged attack (12 for Barrows gloves), a prayer bonus199. In 2025: incredibly minor BIS upgrade, one prayer, no longer hybrid200 About 130m199
Torva helm, platebody, platelegs Equal drop rates; +6 strength bonus total, better defence and slight melee accuracy over Bandos199. In 2025: six strength, one prayer, a lot of defence, a small upgrade over Bandos201. Drops broken; repaired at the forge outside Nex with broken Bandos chestplates or tassets, and one chestplate and tassets repair a whole set202 200–400m per piece199
Nihil horn Combined with an Armadyl crossbow makes the Zaryte crossbow: passive makes bolt procs 10% more effective (ruby bolts 110 instead of 100), special guarantees a bolt proc for 75% special energy202117 360m after dropping202
Ancient hilt Rarest drop, in line with the other God Wars bosses; makes the Ancient godsword203 About 60m203

Ancient godsword: the special uses 50% special energy with doubled accuracy and a 10% higher max hit. The target turns red and has 8 ticks to move at least 5 tiles or be hit for 25 (12 if protecting from magic) while the user heals the same amount. Gnomonkey says it is really only a PvP weapon, and in February 2025 that it has very little use, mostly for PKing, as a situational spec weapon.203204

Zaryte crossbow: in November 2021 he was underwhelmed, and in January 2022 he made it the best mass weapon (above).196117 By February 2025 he says it is what ironmen go to Nex for, as the best special attack weapon in the game for targets over 500 health that can be hit with ranged, making it best in over 20 bosses.204 In January 2025 he lists Nex's rewards as a powerful crossbow upgrade, powerful BIS melee and the best ranged gloves, and that Nex has no currency like the Colosseum. He calls Nex the only higher-level boss with adequate rewards and the only drop table that has worked properly for high-level content, and in February 2025 disagrees with comments that Nex drops too many good items.205206207208

The Nexling is the pet. He considers it an "easy S" because it is the only pet in the game that runs, placing it just below the Chambers of Xeric dusted pet in S tier and above the Inferno pet.209210

Profit

Nex is a team boss, so profit scales with the kill pace and group size. To estimate gp/hr, take kills per hour and team size and roughly guesstimate; he links a gp/hr spreadsheet in the video description.198

Date Figures
Jan 2022 A kill taking only the rares into account is worth about 4.6m. With 6-minute 4-man kills at 10 kills per hour, Nex is well over 12m gp/hr, which he said would definitely go down198
Apr 2022 Kill worth about 7m after the revert; a 6-man hits 14 kills per hour and just over 16m gp/hr, "by far the best" money maker1010
Aug 2022 Close to 15m gp/hr with a solid team, even with drops slightly lower in value23. 3 billion from a 200 million bank would take just under 200 hours, about three weeks of only Nex211
May 2023 Duo kills the previous day at 18–20m gp/hr; absolute max about 20m with max efficiency7
Jul 2023 Average purple worth about 28 million at roughly 1 in 43 gives about 5.5m per kill per player; with five kills an hour about 14m gp/hr in worst-case budget gear182. Better gear approaches six kills an hour and nearly 20m gp/hr212. The budget duo video is framed as 15m gp/hr29
Jul 2023 Nex remains the best gp/hr in the game, followed by Tombs of Amascut213
Jan–Feb 2024 Solo: not worth it, but over 10m gp/hr even with sweet usage19145
Jun–Jul 2024 Duo over 20m gp/hr in max gear (not in budget), and a purple split worth 100 to 250 million4163163

In August 2022 he said he would stay at Nex until he had all the gear wanted for higher-level raids, since his goal includes pets and PvM rather than only the max cape.214 He would trade his Bandos gear for Karil's and an Armadyl crossbow and grind Nex with maxed combat.215 He called 200 hours of Nex far more stimulating than 1,000 hours of Vorkath.211 In October 2022 he said Nex is still the best money not because she is the hardest boss but because she is so boring that no one wants to kill her.24

Records

  • Solo speedrun (Jan 2024): 26:30, which the video description says is the fastest time by over 10 minutes.19
  • Solo (Feb 2024): under 20 minutes (close to 19), smashing the previous time.8
  • Duo times: about 7:30 in max gear; fastest about 6:30.35
  • Team (Apr 2022): 14 kills per hour in a 6-man, just over 16m gp/hr.10
  • First solo drop: at February 2024 no one had received a solo Nex drop.169
  • Condor: a viewer named Condor helped in the later duo runs on the March 2024 stream.216

Gnomonkey's opinion and ratings

  • Difficulty: in May 2022 he said Nex is similar in difficulty to Phosani's Nightmare, with proper small-group Nex a bit tougher.217 He rates her 2/5 for inventory management (the preferred melee method only needs a four-way switch, but tracking gear positions, supplies and specs is required), 3/5 for movement (middle resets, 5-tick walk unders and positioning) and 3/5 for prayer management. He finds prayer a step easier than the Nightmare because the final phase mostly camps magic prayer.217218
  • Tier and depth: "high A tier, not S tier" in March 2022, with more going on than people give her credit for, and he likes controlling Nex's position, calling it definitely A tier.25103 In October 2022: chip damage that makes it a brew-chugging adventure, lacking the depth of the raids; he suggests the most complex and difficult content is not the most rewarding because Old School has yet to provide content for players who want a hard challenge.2424 In July 2023, he stresses Nex is much harder than people give her credit for, with a lot of nuance to resetting.29 In July 2023 (later) he says he has come around to her: step-unders and resetting are underrated, no boss except maybe Inferno speedruns requires switching like Nex does, and she is the best Jagex can come up with for endgame team encounters.26219220 In June 2024 he says people who call her easy are trolling.6 In January 2025 he places Nex as a "boss plus" rather than the same tier as Mokha, Inferno or the Colosseum.27
  • Money: from August 2022 the best moneymaker in the game, most profitable as a duo.23184
  • Enjoyment: meleeing Nex is surprisingly fun with clanmates.211 He was a fan of the original and did a ton of Nex in RS2.17 Gnomonkey recommends the Nex Nostalgia plugin from the plugin hub, which gives her attacks the original voiceover.5

Trivia

  • The Nex fight is in a world where items cannot be dropped on the ground for other players, which Gnomonkey believes was carried over from the Nightmare.221
  • His Discord has a Nex finder channel with FAQ gear setups, and he has made videos on learner and max budget Nex setups.162
  • He recorded a follow-up to his main Nex guide in April 2022, and recommends watching the guide first.222
