Avernic treads is an item topic that Gnomonkey covers in 4 videos between 2025-01-09 and 2025-02-06. This article is a stub: his statements are grouped by type, repeated ones merged.
Stats and numbers
- The Avernic catalyst is a consumable drop from the Doom of Mokhaiotl that combines Primordial boots, Pegasian boots and Eternal boots into the Avernic treads, which come in three recolors, and both the catalyst and treads are tradable.1
- Avernic treads combine the stats of Pegasian, Eternal and Primordial boots plus heavy defence and ranged strength, which Pegasian boots lack, enough in max gear to reach a Toxic blowpipe max hit, about a 4% DPS increase with the pipe.2
- Combining the Avernic treads requires 80 Smithing according to Gnomonkey, who says that seems reasonable and that the upgrade keeps old boots valuable.3
- He checked and it takes roughly 400 medium clue scrolls on average to get ranger boots.4
Gnomonkey's opinion
- Gnomonkey calls the Avernic treads gigantic tribrid boots and probably the best drop from the Doom of Mokhaiotl, with high defence against melee, magic and ranged, and expects Pegasian boot prices to rise.1
- Gnomonkey says claims that the new boots are too weak come from people who do not interact with stats or PvM much, since they combine all three boots in one with extra range strength and extra defence on top, and he thinks they are probably the best drop of the Doom of Mokhaiotl.5
- Gnomonkey says primordial boots are really strong because strength bonus is important, and he has never understood the discourse that they are weak.6
- Gnomonkey is thrilled that the new boots remove the need for nine-way boot switches, saying nine ways do not feel fluid and learning them is not enjoyable; he does not mind that the skill ceiling was lowered.6
- Gnomonkey acknowledges the upgrade tree is large (ranger boots plus a pegasian crystal, infinity boots plus an eternal crystal, dragon boots plus a primordial crystal, all combined), says it is not the end of the world, but getting pegasian boots is annoying.4
- Gnomonkey would like an alternative way to get ranger-style boots, such as from a Slayer monster, and notes infinity boots also require grinding Mage Arena.7
- Gnomonkey would have preferred the Avernic treads to need only the Surb crystals instead of the boots, because he does not like infinity boots and ranger boots staying relevant for PvM, though he calls it not a big deal.8
- Gnomonkey says the Avernic Treads boots are fine and was never against them; his issue was that they were not enough on their own to draw players to endgame content, since a boot upgrade alone is not enough.9
- Gnomonkey says nine-way gear switches are very annoying, and he has had cases of needing 10-way switches with a shield on top of boots and rings, which gets cumbersome in the inventory.10
- Gnomonkey says he does not think the Treads need reworking, but that other rewards need to be added, as the community mostly agreed the boots were good.10
Events
- Jagex has said on platforms that these boots will be the base for any future boot upgrades, so any new mage boots would require them.11
- The Avernic treads are made using the new Avernic catalyst consumable.12
- Jagex decided to keep the Avernic treads upgrade path unchanged despite feedback about complex upgrade trees and linearity, arguing the boss targets players who likely already own the required boots and that upgrades keep older content relevant.12
- Jagex said it would still like to include a version of the Avernic Treads as a Delve boss reward, but will take another look at how to make them more exciting and how they sit economically.9
- Jagex said it had seen an appetite for moving from a nine-way gear switch to an eight-way switch and was confident it could rework the Treads to fill this desire.9
