The Corrupted Hunllef is the boss of the Corrupted Gauntlet. Gnomonkey describes it as one of the harder boss fights players meet early on an account, and probably the hardest boss he did early in his own RuneScape progress.7 It will obliterate a player without armour, and killing it without armour is a combat achievement.8 Armour reduces the boss's damage, the floor damage and the tornado damage.9

His approach is built on counting attacks, reading the boss's animations, and eating only when tornadoes are out. Kills often take a bit over four minutes, and sometimes about three with luck.6 By 2024 he calls about 3:30 roughly average, and in 2026 about three minutes a pretty average kill with two tier three weapons.105

Attack styles

The Hunllef uses two main attack styles, ranged and magic, each hitting a maximum of 13 through prayer. Ranged attacks are grey spit blobs and magic attacks are bright red bursts of energy.311 Ranged is always the first attack, so protect from ranged is turned on on entering.212 It swaps style every four attacks, and its special attacks count towards that four.31113 A jump and stomp animation marks a change of style.14

If the player prays the wrong style, attacks can max at 58.3

While using magic it can throw a pink burst of energy (described in 2026 as dagger-shaped) that instantly disables the player's prayers, usually once per volley of four magic attacks. This only happens during magic attacks, so prayer must be switched back on, and the pink attack makes ranged much safer to handle.111516 Almost every magic phase includes the prayer-disabling attack, so the player should swap to ranged afterwards.17

Melee

If the player stands underneath it for too long it melees, with the same 58 maximum as its other styles.4 This is the only attack that does not count towards its style change, so the attack count is paused for one attack if hit by it.18 Gnomonkey's default reaction to a mistake is to eat a piece of food before the hit lands.19 In 2024 he describes the stomp as around 800 damage, which can be tick eaten.15 He advises keeping distance from the boss so he is not stuck under it, because the floor can pinch the player.20

Boss prayers and weapon swaps

The Hunllef uses protection prayers. In 2020 he gave the swap as roughly every five to six times the player attacks with the correct style; by 2024 and 2026 he states that every sixth attack landed changes its overhead prayer to match the style of the weapon used.31321 The player therefore uses the style it is not praying against, swapping weapons about every five hits, matching the boss's own switch between magic and ranged.221321 Two tier three weapons are used.21

He counts each attack out loud, which he finds easier than counting in his head, tracking which prayer it switches to and swapping weapons accordingly.22324 He keeps the cursor over the next thing he expects to do, such as the next prayer or the weapon.25 Swapping weapons is done while eating fish, and the boss's animation is the cue to swap prayer.26

Floor and tornadoes

The floor randomly lights red then a dull yellow (also described as pale red turning yellow). Standing on tiles when they turn yellow deals 15 to 25 damage each game tick.2728 He recommends dragging the boss away from the edge, because yellow tiles near the edge leave little room to work with.29 Floor patterns activate faster as the fight goes on.30

After about 8 to 14 attacks, the boss rears up and slams the ground, sending out slowly advancing tornadoes that deal 15 to 25 each tick and can stack.31 The usual timing for the tornado special is about 10 attacks.22

In 2026 he describes the same ramp as an extra tornado at 66% and again at 33%, ending with four.30 Four tornadoes stacked on the player kill instantly, but tornadoes can be run over without damage. He compares this to the traps in the Rogues' Den, where the game thinks the player is moving two tiles at a time.4 They are easy to dodge as long as the player keeps running; standing still gets the player killed.32

Yellow tiles can also be run over if timed right.10 Running in straight lines helps, because tornadoes travel straight and move diagonally towards the player only on their last step.3334 Tornadoes next to the player can be stepped onto directly, like Hydra's lightning skip, then the player clicks one tile out and runs in a straight line away.35

With only two tornadoes out it is easy to attack the boss while they are active.17 From three tornadoes onwards, Gnomonkey focuses mainly on healing, because the tornadoes become much more dangerous.3232 At four tornadoes the boss can also melee the player, and the phase is very hectic; he mainly focuses on healing.3636

Food and healing

His rule of thumb is to eat only when tornadoes are active, because APM is highest then and the player cannot attack anyway, so food is spammed without losing game ticks.3738 He drinks prayer doses while the boss is using ranged attacks, an easy time to do it, or when no tornadoes are on the field.1723 Keeping health low lets the player spam food when tornadoes come, whereas high health makes it easy to lose ticks. The biggest mistake he sees is running around instead of damaging the boss.39

  • A player who plays perfectly needs only around eight fish, including redempting off hits and tick eating attacks.40
  • Tick eating works by eating as the attack comes out from far away, because the hit can only hit the remaining health. Redemption also works against hits, since the maximum hit is 13.41
  • As players improve they should bring less food each time and track how many fish they end kills with, rather than a full inventory each time.42
  • For the final part of the 2020 demonstration he ate an extra fish for 18 health rather than 20 to ensure full health, calling the end very dangerous.43 He also warned not to assume hits will land at the end, since weapons can hit zeros five or more times in a row.6
