The Kalphite Queen is a boss with fairly poor drops that Gnomonkey finds annoying to kill, giving only about 2m gp/hr1. He kills her purely for the pet3, which is the largest in the game at four tiles and, in his words, easily in his top five favourite pets16. He puts the pet in A tier with no question because it looks so good, is rare and is tough to grind for66. As a boss he rates her high F tier5; her special mechanic, hitting through armour, is in his view stupid design that negates a mechanic entirely, and the eight-way between phases is only about fifteen seconds and requires little thought7.

The pet is one of two four-tile pets. In March 2022 Gnomonkey corrected an earlier claim: Scorpia's pet looks small but is four tiles, making it the only other four-tile pet besides the Kalphite Queen's68.

Requirements

His guide assumes the player is going for the pet, has a Kalphite task, solid gear and the Desert elite diary, which provides a shortcut that skips a 30-second run around the room1. He does not recommend killing her without a scythe if the diary is done9. If the player still needs the Kalphite Queen head for a diary, he points to the Gear Discord's max-mage method, which is very solid10.

Gear

  • Melee: max melee with Inquisitor's armour and a slayer helmet. He recommends waiting until Inquisitor's is affordable; otherwise wear Bandos and put the scythe on slash. Torva is not better than Inquisitor's here11. Inquisitor's is a 5-10% DPS upgrade and gives a 4% higher chance for the hammer hit to land11.
  • Defence: nearly irrelevant, because her magic and ranged attacks always pass accuracy (though they can roll a zero), so stay in melee range, where her melee attack is not a guaranteed hit9.
  • Ranged switch: blowpipe with dragon darts, a 5% DPS increase over amethyst darts9. Zaryte vambraces do not give the blowpipe and dragon darts a max hit, so they add only about 1% DPS through accuracy; Barrows gloves are fine9. He prefers the Ring of suffering over the Archers ring, for better DPS via recoil damage and some protection from her melee attacks9.
  • Elysian spirit shield: called a silly upgrade that barely improves kills per hour and needs heavy flicking. If owned, it saves roughly one food per kill and raises kills per hour by roughly 10%, but needs a good understanding of the scythe tick cycle10. He also carries an Avernic defender for the hammer spec, which he camps when without an Elysian9.
  • Other: Max cape (or construction cape or house tabs) to teleport out, Book of the Dead and cosmic, blood and fire runes for thralls. Vengeance is worse here than thralls even without an alt to vengeance the player12.
  • Potions: pre-pot Divine super combat, Divine ranging and a dose of antidote or anti-venom before a trip, in case food drops last long enough to use the final divine doses. Only the antidote needs prepotting as she drops super antipoison often13.

Strategy

Route

Teleport to the house and restore, take Fairy ring BIQ to near the Kalphite hive, run to the hole and climb down, have an alt cast Vengeance if there is one, and use the shortcut. While travelling through the hole turn on thralls plus Protect from Melee and Piety, because the Kalphite guardians are accurate and can pop Vengeance14.

Phase one

Run toward the end of the arena where she stands and turn on Protect from Magic once the first guardian attacks. When she attacks, switch the Elysian shield for an Avernic defender, summon a thrall and use a Dragon warhammer special15. The setup has about 74% special accuracy, so both or at least one hammer almost always lands, with about a 5% chance to miss both; if so, still finish the kill15. The thrall type does not matter, but do not summon the zombie thrall at the start as it wastes time walking up to her2.

Then switch to the scythe. Stand under her every few attacks because she has a 4-tick attack cycle and the scythe is 5-tick; go under to eat below 31 HP, her max hit, and with the Elysian shield go under on each attack2. Her attacks land the tick after the player attacks if timed properly, so switching to the Elysian shield when XP drops blocks a lot of damage. Optionally double-switch to a Ring of suffering as the player attacks to reflect extra damage and further reduce her melee chance; the timing is lenient16.

After phase one, eat to above 70 HP if both hammers hit or above 90 HP if only one or none did, which are the rough averages for the damage taken in the rest of the kill and avoids wasting food17.

Phase two

Switch to ranged gear and Rigor and attack with the blowpipe. If below 31 HP go under her, eat, and continue. Resummon a zombie thrall if it despawns, because it kills faster and does not need to walk to her17. If out of food or darts, go under her, switch back to melee, wait for three thrall attacks before swinging and immediately go back under; this flinches her and can salvage a bad kill. With a ranging potion and a brew drop, sip the brew then the range potion to continue ranging18.

Banking

After a kill, pick up valuable loot with food drops taking priority, teleport back to the house, restore, run back, and re-sip divine potions every two kills with about a minute of timer left when restoring4. If small cow-fight-style spawns are seen when nobody is in the cave, hop worlds to avoid stepping on people's toes, as they only spawn if someone was recently in the cave19.

Drops

She has no valuable rare drops. The best are occasional dragon chainbody, magic seed, grimy ranarr, torstol or snapdragon, enough to cover supplies plus about 500k to 1m gp/hr3. Duplicate Kalphite Queen heads can be alched for 30k or stacked in the bank3. The pet is a 1 in 3,000 drop, which Gnomonkey says he very unfortunately just exceeded4.

At absolute max efficiency with an Elysian shield and an alt, he reaches 30 kills per hour. Kills drop each time someone crashes the player, and he estimates closer to 25 with max gear and no alt or Elysian3.
