The Hueycoatl is a Varlamore boss designed for a trio or larger, with no scaling options below that.2 Gnomonkey was not impressed: he expected a Moons of Peril-tier boss with tutorial-style mechanics and okay regular loot, and in his description concluded that the loot is trash even for mid-level players and that it offers no real entertainment, so unless pet hunting he recommends Scurrius or Moons instead.9106 He says its mechanics are below Scurrius's, whom he used to hate but came to see as great for teaching new players PvM.10 After the May 2025 update he rates the improved wand much higher.11
The fight
The kill flow is to climb the mountain hitting the body segments one by one (a Lance works, a scythe does not), run up to the head, scythe it to 50% health, kill the tail out of its cave, then finish the head.12 He describes it as AFK-hitting the segments while dodging extremely slow lightning (slower than Scurrius's rockfall), with a prayer projectile roughly every 20 seconds.13 Lightning splotches hit three ticks after they appear and the colour-coded prayer projectiles come extremely slowly.14 The punishment for messing up a mechanic is at worst around a 20 hit, with no real risk of death.15
- Combat style: everything is crush, with no style switches, so Inquisitor's gear is better than Torva; max mage with Ward and Magus is only about 1% better in a huge switch and much worse on the tail, so he says not to use magic or ranged.416
- Tail waves: the boss hits nothing if the player stands on a particular tile during the tail wave, so the player can AFK there. To dodge otherwise, step off the tail early and click back on if the wave particle appears in the corner of the tail box; two green tile markers allow an auto-dodge by waiting a second, then clicking.1718
- Pillar mechanic: pillars on the side fill a bar when three different protection prayers are active at all times (for example one player on melee, two on ranged, one on mage), which dings and boosts damage; he hit 93 with claws after it triggered, and recommends holding the special attack until the ding.1917 He believes the buff is 25%.2 It cannot be done solo or duo because three protection prayers cannot be up, so those scales are bad.20
- Instances: the player can make their own instance by hitting the flag on the mountain.1
- Loot split: like Nex, everyone gets the same drop but more damage dealt means more of the loot; he joined a four-man late and received two rune maces of the 16 dropped.21
- The Hueycoatl's HP does not scale down for small teams, so small groups simply do 25% less damage.3 A solo is technically possible with 8-minute kills in full max.2 Recoil is disabled at the boss, as at every other new boss.22
Opinions on the design
Gnomonkey considers forced groups unnecessary at a learner boss with roughly three mechanics where the player stands still most of the fight.3 The pillar mechanic is a half-hearted attempt at teamwork, as everyone just prays something different with no communication, and it hard locks solos and duos.23 The wave mechanic is poorly telegraphed because the waves do not align with where they actually are, is used nowhere else and should be scrapped.24 The click boxes are bad: the body segments are one big box that does not match the visuals and the flopping tail is hard to click, a problem he says is common in Varlamore including the Colosseum.25 The killstreak mechanic has an unknown effect on loot and perfect kills seem bugged.26 He says new bosses need more gear switches and asks why Jagex never tries to teach switches.27
Drops
- Regular drops: not very good, and Moons bosses are way better in general.6
- Huasca: it drops herb seeds for a new herb, Huasca, used for Prayer enhance potions, which sold for between 30k and 500k on day one. The seeds are fairly rare and the secondary from the herb minigame is hard to get. On an ironman he would use enhances only in extremely difficult challenges where prayer is an issue, such as the Colosseum and Inferno.667
- Hide: creates an improved blessed dragonhide, the same as blessed dragonhide with two extra prayer bonus. The Tome of Earth only boosts earth spells, useful only on Steel dragons.5
- Pet: the other reason to come, for pet hunters.7
Hueycoatl wand
At launch he considered there to be no real reason to kill the boss for rewards, since the Dragon hunter wand's Dragon Hunter 1 effect is incredibly weak and is basically only for killing Steel dragons early in an ironman. It sits between a regular trident and the Trident of the swamp at Olm, is not good anywhere, and is worse than the Trident, since the head cannot be run with it; the boss is not weak to magic so it is useless there.28510
| Change (30 May 2025) | Detail | Cites |
|---|---|---|
| Bonus damage | 20% to 40% | 8 |
| Accuracy | 50% to 75% | 8 |
| Drop rate | three times more common; about 69 kills instead of 207 | 8 |
| Spells | Can auto-cast Ancient spells; 10% bonus damage | 29 |
| Tail HP | Reduced, because Jagex felt the tail was a slog | 8 |
| Hide armour | Crafting requirement lowered below black dragonhide | 29 |
Gnomonkey says the wand becomes the new best-in-slot at rune dragons, since the player can stand out of melee range and pray ranged so only magic hits land; it is also great on adamant dragons, metal dragons and the Great Olm with its earth weakness, possibly beating Sanguinesti DPS.11 Its range of 10 and thrall dropping mean it is not realistic solo and works best in teams.11 He calls it a straight-up better ancient sceptre and a great mid-game iron option if a nightmare staff or Kodai wand is not available.29
