Chambers of Xeric (CoX, "Chambers") is a raid that Gnomonkey describes as easily one of the best pieces of PvM content in the game, with a deep solo and Challenge Mode scene that he speedruns, but also the slowest raid to complete, with very rare purples12. Across 23 videos he covers rating it, learning it as a solo, Challenge Mode records, plugins, and the January 2025 mega-scale nerf and 2026 loot reweighting.

See also Chambers of Xeric: Challenge Mode, Great Olm and Update: Entry Mode CM CoX.

Overview and ratings

  • Gnomonkey says Chambers was janky when it came out, but Olm is an incredible boss fight, and that the raid added new prayers and arguably too many items, which is good for a first attempt at a raid1.
  • In the March 2022 tier list he says the raid has a lot of thought in its layout and scouting, but scouting is disliked and holds it back; regular Chambers is A tier, not S, because the regular bosses need little skill3. Challenge Mode has a ton of skill and teamwork (one person finishing Vanguard prep, tightrope skips, crab communication) but boring downtime4. He places Challenge Mode at the bottom of S, below Olm, despite calling the Muttadile room horrible there5, and places the entire raid just above Xarpus in his final order6.
  • In the May 2022 skill-pillar ratings, Chambers gets 5/5 for Inventory management (losing the inventory mid-run may as well lose the raid), 4/5 for movement (Olm, especially solo, and nearly all standard rooms involve movement; Corner trapping matters at the Mystics) and 3/5 for prayer management (Vespula with Redemption, and Olm's prayer orbs and alternating attacks)78.
  • In July 2023 he says Challenge Mode is Chambers "cranked to 11" and needs careful inventory management, banking and route planning9; it is one of the few pieces of content with mechanical depth along with Theatre of Blood and the Inferno10.
  • In July 2024 he calls Chambers and Theatre of Blood fun and great raids, but their overall purple chance is less than half of Tombs of Amascut11. He says Chambers typically caps out around 10 million GP per hour12.
  • In June 2026 he says Chambers is by far the longest raid to complete; Theatre of Blood is the perfect length, Tombs slightly too fast, and Chambers too long since full ancestral can take longer than a Twisted bow13.

Layout, scouting and rooms

  • Chambers is the only raid with scouting, so the bosses are random, and the rooms to avoid depend on the weapons owned14. There are only two possible room rotations, and RuneLite scouting sometimes shows unknown because the game needs two combat rooms to reveal the whole raid15.
  • Gnomonkey says people fear the V-rooms (Vanguards, Vespula, Vasa), but Vanguards is the hardest regular room and one to avoid if possible14. Vasa and Vespula are the fastest rooms with a good weapon such as Twisted bow or Shadow16.
  • As of the October 2024 video, the stairs had been updated about six months earlier so the raid can be reloaded to reroll the layout17. The layout letters show room types (scavs, farming, combat, puzzle), so scavengers can be done before a puzzle room and seeds grabbed from Mystics, Guardians, Shamans or by raking18.
  • Certain bosses (Muttadile, Tekton and the V-rooms) drop overloads of the best tier, whereas making the best overload needs 90 Herblore17. Vespula and Vasa were changed to drop overloads, which made a VSV-style Bofa speed raid possible, roughly what world record runs are19.
  • Specialty items per room: a pickaxe for Guardians, a salve amulet for Mystics, a lockpick for thieving and an axe for Muttadile's tree; axe tier does nothing, so the lowest tier is fine, while pickaxe tier and Woodcutting level matter2021.
  • Thralls give free damage in almost every room, but cannot reach Vespula and the Guardians' portal; they do not damage Vasa's crystals but do hit Vasa; the Ice Demon's 66% damage reduction applies to them, so their max hit becomes one and they hit that one out of four attacks222324. They shine at Tekton because of his high defence and they keep hitting while he walks to the anvil25, and they are extremely beneficial for Olm solos since a thrall hit on one hand while attacking the other still keeps Olm from turning to the middle22.
  • Bofa versus Atlatl, February 2025: on shamans on-paper DPS was 8.99 for the Bofa against 8.75 for the Atlatl (about 3% better); Vasa about 7% better with the Bofa, though the Atlatl loses its burn effect at the crystal; Olm head with max stats about 8% better; Mystics about 20% better26272829. He calls the Vespula portal one of the Bofa's best uses in the game because the Atlatl cannot reach it30. A hammer special attack is quite good on Vasa since the quality-of-life changes mean it no longer regains defence quickly27.

Solo learning guide

Gnomonkey's October 2024 guide is an entry-level solo guide based on his ironman's gear31.

  • Gear: entry-level setup is a Fury amulet, Eclipse Moon armour, Barrows gloves, dragon boots and a Berserker ring32. Eclipse Moon armour doubles as ranged armour (two-way switch) with Blue Moon armour for mage (six-way switch)33. A hasta and the abyssal whip are both very good; the hasta is easier to get earlier but maxes lower and can crush, which matters for Tekton32. The Dragon hunter lance is probably the biggest possible melee upgrade, and with the Sanguinesti staff (which heals) the two biggest upgrades3435. He says the Lightbearer is a common mistake and a camped melee ring such as the Berserker ring is usually better; the Ultor ring is good with the lance and the Bellator ring with a scythe3634.
  • Weapons: Osmumten's fang should not be the only weapon, as it is five-tick and Olm needs a four-tick weapon, but it can be brought additionally for rooms like Tekton37. The dragon warhammer is the worst thing to grind but is wanted for Tekton and Olm's hands; he estimates raids are about five minutes slower without one, and without a hammer he would bring Burning claws and spam specs38.
  • Prerequisite grinds: an ironman should do the basic grinds first (Xeric-related, dragon warhammer, Moons of Peril)38.
  • Learning Olm: the regular raid is easy compared to Olm, so learning Chambers is mostly learning Olm39. He plants Buchu seeds (two needed, three plenty) and kills scavengers for potion secondaries40; about three restores at most are needed for Olm, and he ends with about 12 brews plus an overload, enhance and about three restores41. Potions can be made while running42. A no-prep approach is possible with experience, but beginners take more damage at Olm and should prep43. Dropping a brew and a restore as a pile before Olm is called a "noob tactic"44.
  • Entry Mode setup (May 2025): a seven-way mage setup with the Book of the Dead for thralls, a Zamorak godsword for Muttadile, a Bow of Faerdhinen setup and a melee setup with lance and Fire cape45; two brews, a restore, two Phoenix necklaces for the tightrope skip, crystal pickers, a salve amulet and a lance, with a fang optionally swapped for a brew or the restore4647. He likes Amulet of blood fury while learning and torture or rancour longer term48. Fire, blood and cosmic runes help Olm turn correctly in a solo48, and an antidote is needed before the Shamans49.
  • Banking: the hardest step for learners50. After Thieving he takes only the hammer for Vasa, ZGS for Muttadile, Salve for the Mystics, a pickaxe for Guardians and two Phoenix necklaces51; he leaves four slots free for Vespula potions and three before Vasa52, and banks as much as possible before the Vanguards53. Three restores while learning Olm and two later, with three stamina doses (two on a first solo Olm)54.
  • Shadow running and the lance method: the 12:0 and 8:1 Shadow running methods and the 4:1 lance method are described as not tough to learn55; the long range attack style should be bound to a tab56. He remembers his method by labelled tiles and the hits of the cycle57. He says he thinks he is the first to use a three-tick weapon on Olm's head phase58. His 4-1 method is credited in a tribute59.

Challenge Mode

Challenge Mode (CM) is covered on its own page, Chambers of Xeric: Challenge Mode; this section gives what Gnomonkey said across videos.

  • Requirements: June 2023, he says CM has the highest gear requirements of any content in the game; it is doable without an Inquisitor's mace, but he calls Twisted bow, Tumeken's Shadow and the mace all incredibly important60. October 2024, he advises against learning solo CM without a Tbow and near-max gear, since normal raids quickly give better purples per hour31.
  • Prep: potions can be prepped after about the third boss, or CM can be done no-prep; rooms drop many potions so the inventory can be filled with switches61. The minimum to enter Olm for a no-prep CM is about four brews62; prep gives a cushion while learning63. Vials come from the Shaman area64.
  • Opinions: skill is mostly logistics, and he dislikes that everything has its defence cranked for no reason and that missing hammers is annoying65; he calls CM Tekton an example of annoying high-defence design10; he complains about loading lag lines of about three ticks, which he calls an engine bug66. As an Ironman he considers CM some of the worst content ever, though doable67.
  • Speedrunning: spellbook swaps with the Max cape right after Ice Demon, about six minutes into a roughly 30-minute raid, limit him to five CM runs a day68. The CM solo-time Combat Achievement requires 38:30 and gets flak for being too easy; he says it was very tough when made, is now realistic, and should not be changed697071.
  • Naked run (September 2023): Gnomonkey did a naked solo CM, died once, finished the early rooms in almost 15 and a half minutes, and beat the challenge time for 5,000 extra points727374. Room times: Muttadiles about 2:30, Mystics about 4:00, Vasa about 6:00, Guardians about 3:00, Vespula about 6:00, Thieving 2:39, Vanguards 3:45, Shamans 2:15, Ice Demon 6:39, Tekton 2:0073. Osmumten's fang was 69.42 percent better than the scythe for Tekton in that run75. See also Naked Man Triathlon.
  • Clue scroll gear (October 2023): a solo run using only clue scroll gear in about 27 minutes of raid time76; see Clue Scroll Raider.

Records and times

Date Run Time Source
2023-06-14 Personal best solo CM; world record then 26:38 by Rot Salad (per description) 27:04.20 60
2023-12-02 Fastest Tekton 1:24 77
2023-12-02 Current CM record as mentioned by Gnomonkey 25:45 78
2023-12-02 Solo CM in Leagues, believed fastest there 19:54 79
2023-12-31 World record attempt that failed at Olm; would have been "easily" 24:40 80
  • December 2023: the new CoX update shaved at least a minute off everyone's time by his estimate, and per the description took massive time off Tekton, Thieving and Muttadile, helping make a sub 20-minute run possible8177. He says he ran out of cape swaps for main game record attempts and moved to Leagues78.
  • The 2023-12-31 attempt: Shamans in 53 seconds82; Thieving done in under nine minutes of run time, the fastest he has seen8380; record pace at 7:42 into the run was around 7:5084. Room times: Tekton 1:10 (58 crabs, 1:53 pop), Ice Demon 2:30, Shamans 53 seconds, Vanguards 2:0780. A timer bug is attributed to the CoX Analytics plugin85.
  • March 2025: duo raid with Hedron on Hardcore Ironman accounts to celebrate the Fire cape on the backup HCIM; the raid ended with a Twisted bow purple after repeated deaths, Gnomonkey dying about seven times and having about 1.5k points8687. It was the longest Olm fight he had done88. Tekton and Vespula each give one enhance potion, so the duo planned who took each89.
  • Gnomonkey says he has hundreds of regular raids and about 600 Challenge Mode raids (around 1300 total on his main) with about three mega rares and no Twisted bow90.

Plugins

  • Most helpers are bundled under the CoX Editions plugin, with Crab Solver and Stun Timer used separately91. The instance timer setting lets him enter on the tick the raid counter starts, which allows pulling Tekton to the anvil instantly91. See RuneLite plugins.
  • Crab Solver shows the style needed to paint crabs and a tick timer for how long they remain still92; the CoX Vanguards plugin shows each vanguard's style and damage before reset92; Bat Locator finds bats and the poison chest93; a prayer enhance timer is used at Vespula93; at Olm CoX Editions shows where Olm pops up, HP over his limbs and the current phase94.
  • Raid Reloader adds a button so that running near the entrance and reloading lets RuneLite see more of the map95. The Chambers of Zarek plugin whitelists and blacklists rooms, for example blacklisting the V-rooms without a Bofa96. He uses True tile markers on crabs and orbs at Tekton97 and Entity Hider with "hide dead monsters"98.

Rewards and changes

  • January 2025 mega-scale nerf: players who leave a raid in progress are still eligible to roll uniques but the reward is discarded, so leaving no longer transfers loot chances to remaining participants99. Gnomonkey calls it a nerf that needed to happen100 and thinks players mega scaled because purples are very rare and the raid is much slower than the other two101. He had always said Tombs drops were too common, but this update made him reconsider and he now thinks Chambers should be brought in line, citing Tombs purples at rates like one in nine and about one in four in his solo 500 raids101. He suggests moving some drops to new Slayer monsters or bosses, as with the Dragon harpoon and Dragon throwing knives102, and says the nerf is fair while he expects mega scaling to remain the best way to get purples with some gear103. See also Mega rare.
  • June 2026 (Summer Sweep-Up): the Surge potion cooldown is no longer reset on death inside Chambers, ending the speedrun meta of taking a two-dose surge potion to Olm and deliberately dying between phases to reset the cooldown104. He thinks this is good but the world record will now be hard to beat105. Night-wave progress is no longer reset when leaving via the door105. See Update: Summer Sweep-up.
  • Prayer scroll weighting (June 2026): per the blog, the unique tables are weighted heavily towards the arcane and dexterous prayer scrolls, so roughly 58% of uniques seen on average are a prayer scroll, also in CM106. CM completion adds the twisted ancestral kit and metamorphic dust to a tertiary table without changing the ordinary table, whereas Theatre of Blood hard mode reduces the Avernic defender hilt weighting by 7.7%106107. He notes the dragon sword, dragon thrown axe and dragon harpoon used to be on the drop table108.
  • July 2026 proposed reweighting: regular raid total weighting drops from 69 to 60 and each ancestral piece rises from 3 to 4, a 33% increase in chance109. Arcane and Dexterous scroll weighting falls from 20 to 14 in regular raids and to 12 in CM; the old weighting meant about five prayer scrolls per ancestral piece110. Jagex expects prices to shift but GP per hour not to drop drastically109. Gnomonkey says ancestral pieces were far too rare, usually the last item ironmen chase over hundreds of raids111. He thinks CM would be best with a larger completion bonus (currently 5k points, ideally 10k to 20k) and that it may now be better than regular raids for players who have a Twisted bow111. See also Opinion: Chambers prayer scroll weighting.
  • In a June 2026 video about his Deadman All-Stars experience, prayer scrolls from Chambers saved the team about 10 blood money of their 40 total112113. See Deadman All-Stars.
  • Gnomonkey also says going dry on a Twisted bow is the scariest dry streak in the game, because it is essential114.
