The Atlatl is a three-tick ranged dart-throwing weapon from the Perilous Moons that scales with the player's melee strength from melee armour, so higher melee strength raises its max hit.13 Gnomonkey considers it an incredibly underrated weapon that mains rarely use, which comes very close to the Bow of Faerdhinen for a fraction of the price, and calls it incredibly good early for both mains and irons.86 In 2025 he called the Eclipse Atlatl an insanely powerful mid-game weapon, especially with lower-tier hybrid gear, and built an entire 300 Tombs of Amascut guide around it.7
Obtaining and ammunition
The Atlatl drops from Eclipse Moon at the Perilous Moons.3 He thinks it is probably the easiest and cheapest Colosseum weapon to obtain, and says the hardest part of the run is buying the darts.1 Darts cost around 10 gp each but have a buy limit of 100, which he considers absurd; two or three hundred is enough.5 He suggests doing some Perilous Moons to get a lot of ammo, since it is very cheap.9 He calls it criminal that the setup costs only about six million, and rates the Eclipse set about as useful as the full Blood Moon set, which is quite expensive.4
Gear and setup
- Strength: with strength gear that does not have a lot of negative ranged, pray the ranged prayer rather than Piety to maximise the strength bonus; the potion to use is a super strength potion, not a ranging potion, since the damage comes from strength.102 Super combat potions also affect the Atlatl, which he finds strange.11 In the Colosseum he first noted that with Piety on the Atlatl maxes high enough that Rigour is not needed, and that it kills a Fremennik mage in two shots, six ticks in total, the same as a Webweaver bow or blowpipe.12131
- Rings and amulets: a Berserker ring boosts damage, and a melee ring such as it is needed for the weapon to be good; a lightbearer should be brought as a switch rather than camped.1415 A plain strength amulet is a very good Atlatl amulet because it has the same strength bonus (10) as a torture amulet and costs about 2K.16 An Amulet of fury is the best DPS amulet with the Atlatl, which is why his 300 setup uses just an Ava's assembler and the Atlatl as the range switch.1517 In early 2025 he said it would normally pair with an Occult necklace and an Anguish, and that the only reason to want a Fury for the Inferno was the Atlatl; by February he said an Anguish is not helpful with it.1714
- Armour: full Eclipse armour lets the Atlatl proc burn damage like burning claws, adding roughly one DPS per throw.18 Its DPS drops once gear is upgraded to pure melee stats rather than hybrid (for example pharaoh's gloves), so it locks the player into mid-level hybrid armour and the player typically moves to a blowpipe as gear improves.1920
Performance
Gnomonkey describes the Atlatl as usually performing close to a blowpipe; in an Inferno setup with an Anguish and amethyst darts it was beating the blowpipe.17 A blowpipe is usually slightly worse than the Atlatl, though the blowpipe lets the player wear full ranged gear, and with weak darts the blowpipe loses to the Atlatl.21 It is best against lower defence targets but punches through defence better than a blowpipe, putting it between those weapons.22
| Comparison | Result | Cites |
|---|---|---|
| Bofa (with the Eclipse set) | Atlatl does about five percent less damage | 23 |
| Bofa at Mystics | Bofa about 20% better; elsewhere in Chambers the Atlatl is almost the same | 24 |
| Crossbow at Zebak | Atlatl better when an Ironman first accesses Tombs of Amascut | 19 |
| Blowpipe with low-tier darts at Akkha's shadows | Atlatl better | 25 |
| Crossbow at Zuk | Worse until very late; used only after the healers | 26 |
Strength levels are easier to train than ranged levels (for example on nagas for very high strength XP), so at some account stages the Atlatl beats the Bofa.14 The Bofa is the better option if the player already has it, but is not needed; it is also required for far-away targets because of the Atlatl's low range.2522 In January 2025 he tried the Atlatl and said he sees why others skip the Bofa, though he was torn because of the Bofa's use at Mystics.27
Uses
- Inferno: range is only six tiles (eight after a fix), so it reaches Zuk only at dead center. Its nine-tick speed fits the prayer flick rhythm and makes flicking easy.2628
- Tombs of Amascut: the three-tick speed lets it easily kill the monkeys in the monkey room, and at Warden phase 3 its attack speed matches Warden's so insanity is simple: move, attack, move, attack, without losing ticks as with slower weapons.2930 At Zebak the player must attack only in range and avoid being dragged into the mouth.31 Its special attack consumes all burn stacks and gives a huge max hit, so it hits harder the more burn damage Zebak has; he tried it with no burn stacks and got a very low hit.32
- Colosseum: the Fremennik at the start are weak to its style, so its hits are guaranteed max hits.1
He also says an Ancient mace is not worth using instead of the Saradomin godsword, which he uses for health to chunk 50 on a bad spawn and would use even if it did not restore prayer.33
