Nex reset is a mechanic topic that Gnomonkey covers in 2 videos between 2022-04-11 and 2024-06-15. This article is a stub: his statements are grouped by type, repeated ones merged.
Methods
- Gnomonkey's 'clown tech' uses colourful ground-marker tiles (pastebin link in the description); each starting tile around Nex is tied to a set of tiles by Fumus.1
- When Nex is pushed down to Fumus HP, each player runs to their inner tile set based on where they started; the team then narrows down who the tank is and moves everyone else to their outer set of tiles.2
- For the P2 reset the team stands at the back wall; crossbow users flinch shots, Twisted bow users camp, and others AFK at the back wall until Nex runs up in melee mode.3
- When Nex is a tile away from you in melee mode, run underneath her to reset her back to the centre; this prevents deaths when Nex enters melee mode after Embrace Darkness and keeps damage low by keeping her at max range.4
- A reset means stepping under Nex when she runs at you, which stops her pursuit. If Nex has no target to attack for a random 5 to 7 ticks she returns to the centre of the room.5
- Nex is the only boss in the game with this reset mechanic.5
- While attacking minions, the goal is to keep Nex in the centre of the room not hitting anyone; otherwise she starts doing heavy damage and specials, especially in phase 2 where she deals more damage the closer you are.6
- Tick walking: enabling the shift-click walk-under setting in the menu entry swapper lets you hold shift and walk under Nex anywhere, clicking where her centre tile moves every game tick to stay under her permanently, as done in Nex solos.7
- In the Shadow phase, step under the centre when Nex is one tile away from you as she runs at you; this resets her.8
Tips
- The Fumus tile setup forces the team to be spread out for the virus, prevents Nex from switching targets so only one person needs to tank damage, and lets that tank reset Nex back to the centre if she enters melee mode.2
- The Fumus tiles are one extra tile past the corridors because Nex can melee from her corners; this stops her meleeing as she sprints up towards the team.3
- Nex moves two tiles per tick, so if she has smudged a tile off where she should be, you need to go under her a lot earlier than you would think.4
- If someone misses a reset, the tank should immediately go under her and pray to get the reset then; if that fails, someone must go behind Nex and drag her back. Gnomonkey says missing the reset causes a ton of problems.4
- Gnomonkey offers radius markers and tiles for Nex through his Twitch chat commands !nexradius and !nextiles, which he calls an absolute must when learning resets.9
- Enable Nex's true tile in the RuneLite NPC indicators; Gnomonkey steps under as her tile sticks out from the end of the corridor, similar to timing at Akkha.10
- If someone misses a reset on phase 2 (Shadow) and Nex runs up to them, the team should simply teleport out via the altar because they will die.11
- Tick walking can be used in a pinch to force a manual reset when Nex is in a bad position, but Gnomonkey says it is advanced and not needed early on.12
- Missing a reset is far worse than lower DPS, so you can crossbow the whole time while learning to make resets easier.13
Gnomonkey's opinion
- Gnomonkey considers nailing resets, more than five-ticking or praying correctly, the single biggest thing in Nex and the hardest thing to learn; it is why he dislikes bringing new people, because one missed reset can get the whole team killed.5
Trivia
- The P2 reset technique was known for a long time and he did not invent it.3
