Contents

Methods

  • The Scythe's additional hitsplats gain extra bonus max hits at every two and four max hits of base max hit; in max gear with standard potions it has a base max hit of 50 for a total max hit of 87; at base 51 (what the rancor gives) it gains no bonus and maxes 88, but at base 52 it jumps to 91.1

Stats and numbers

  • The Amulet of rancor is an upgraded Amulet of torture that gains an extra 2 strength and 5 accuracy bonus for all styles.2
  • Gnomonkey's comparison shows the rancor amulet gives one extra max hit with the Osmumten's fang over Blood fury, but its accuracy matters a lot against a 500 Kephri and it is typically around 3% better than Blood fury, with similar figures of about 3% at Ohm with a Lance (as transcribed) and at Verzik P3 in mid-level gear.3
  • A max melee Scythe with the rancor amulet versus Blood fury at Sol Heredit is under 2% better.4
  • Gnomonkey's spreadsheet found torture needs +16 total strength bonus for the Scythe to consistently get 2 extra max hits.1
  • With a +16 rancor, Gnomonkey's calcs say it would be at minimum 5% better DPS than Blood fury and at best 7% better; it adds 2 max hit to the Osmumten's fang in max gear without a ring (where Lightbearer is typically worn).5
  • Gnomonkey's calculated improvement of a +16 rancor over Blood fury: about 5% for the fang, 5.5% for Verzik P3 in max, 6.2% at Ulm (as transcribed), 5.1% at Baba, and 6.8% at Verzik P2 in mid-level gear.5
  • At Theatre of Blood against a fully drained Maiden the amulet of rancour is barely any different from Blood fury, and that it is great on phase 2 of a fight he mentions.6

Gnomonkey's opinion

  • Gnomonkey says he has long called for a buff to torture so it can compete with Blood fury and welcomes the rancor, but thinks it is still too weak to compete with Blood fury.3
  • Gnomonkey proposes a +16 strength rancor amulet that would future-proof against new items, always being 2 higher max hit than Blood fury with a minimum of +3 max hits for the Scythe.7
  • Gnomonkey says the current rancor is only 1.5% to 3% better than Blood fury, which is not enough for anyone to put Blood fury down, whereas 5% to 7% would make Blood fury look much less worthwhile.8
  • Gnomonkey says that with a stronger rancor, Blood fury would become a utility amulet used as a switch where you need HP (he mentions the Colosseum) and camped where you desperately need HP, such as solo Theatre of Blood, rather than the melee amulet.9
  • If Jagex considers a +16 amulet too strong to drop for everyone from a Slayer boss, Gnomonkey suggests it could be a rare drop or require a component from the Nightmare or Theatre of Blood to upgrade the amulet.9
  • Gnomonkey says he hopes Jagex improves the rancor's strength to crush Blood fury, noting it is odd to give a Slayer boss a proposed best-in-slot melee amulet right after a nerf of a cult item for being too strong.10
  • Gnomonkey says the amulet of rancour (transcribed 'Rancor') is really good against tanky bosses such as Challenge Mode bosses, but against targets with zero defence it does basically nothing and is not good over Blood fury.6
