Osmumten's fang is a five-tick, hyper-accurate, one-handed spear that rolls accuracy twice and has a low max hit12. Gnomonkey's view of it moved from dismissing the announced version in February 2022 as hilariously bad, through a period in which he considered it the best-in-slot weapon for almost every situation, to a July 2024 verdict that it is amazing on high-defence bosses weak to melee and bad on low-defence targets345.

Stats and changes

At its announcement Gnomonkey said the fang was a 1% DPS increase against Nex and nowhere else, so it was not like the rapier as Jagex described but just bad. He suspected Jagex had not tested its DPS33.

The poll blog changed it in May 2022. Its stab bonus fell to 105 instead of 175, and melee strength was reduced to 103 from 115, but it now re-rolls for accuracy if the first roll fails1. He said the re-roll makes the fang a bit more accurate than before without an awkwardly high stab bonus, though the strength cut from 115 to 103 seemed strange, perhaps because it beat the rapier in too many places6. He called it worse DPS than the Zamorakian spear on a fully drained Corp but far more DPS than before on Nex because of her insane defence, a neutral change that solidifies its niche status6.

In December 2023 Jagex announced removing the doubled accuracy roll when the fang is used on slash. Gnomonkey said this is exactly what he had suggested7. Before it, the fang had been extremely competitive as a slash weapon against Arclight and Saradomin sword, in some cases beating even the Scythe, which blurred the line between best stab weapon and best melee weapon; he said it had reigned too long as best in slot for almost every situation and style44. After the change he expects the Saradomin sword to be second best in slot on Vardorvis and the Arclight on the Duke7.

The fang kit adds 20 DPS to slash, but Gnomonkey, using stab on the fang in 2025, set it to stab and avoided putting the kit on8. He called the kit drop dead gorgeous9.

Uses

The fang is amazing on high-defence bosses weakest to melee, which covers most Tombs of Amascut bosses, and bad on anything under 50 defence, which is basically all Slayer monsters5. It benefits less from strength bonus than most weapons, so it pairs well with the Lightbearer, where strength bonus matters less5. He says many people misuse it2.

  • Nex: He called Nex definitely better money than Theatre of Blood in September 2022, given the fang, the speed of kills and the drop value. Duo Nex with the fang is very viable and absurdly fast, and ranged is never worth using at any scale1011.
  • Tombs of Amascut and Chambers of Xeric: In a naked Tombs of Amascut run the fang is probably the best weapon and might beat the Ghrazi rapier1213. In his naked Challenge Mode Chambers run he calculated the fang at 69.42 percent better than the Scythe for Tekton and 55 percent better than the rapier at another room14.
  • Vorkath: Gearscape confirmed the fang as the best Vorkath choice under his budget, and he calls it supreme and extremely good there151617. If Vorkath is brought to low defence with a Bandos godsword, the blowpipe takes over at about 10% better, though the fang also improves with it18.

The fang's spec is strong for its cost, and he called it quite good for a weapon that costs "zero" on that budget15.

Price and drop rate

The fang costs 13 million gp as of July 20242. In December 2023 Gnomonkey still thought its Tombs of Amascut drop rate needed addressing so that the all-encompassing super sword is not worth 25 million, but called the slash change a good step7.

Odablock Warriors

In the finale, a team without fangs or Galiths basically loses, so the Odablock Warriors prioritised getting fangs19. The team had never planned to do quests or Slayer, so it had no plan for questing toward a Purging staff or Dragon Slayer 2 for dragon crossbows, and had to obtain fangs without questing20. They got four of the five needed fangs before Odablock told Gnomonkey to stop Tombs of Amascut and move to Chambers of Xeric21.
