Mixed hide armour is Hunter armour costing about 10k that gives both strength and stab bonus, which Gnomonkey considers very good2. He describes the body as effectively Bandos but with stab and ranged bonus, and says almost every budget setup now includes it7. Added alongside the Coliseum at the Hunter Guild, it is known to few players3. Over May and June 2024 his view grew from calling himself a big proponent to calling it overpowered and the new meta for first 500s in Tombs of Amascut789.

Stats and requirements

The chestplate carries the strength bonus while the legs have only stab bonus; his full setup showed a stab bonus of 1373. The set has a 27 ranged bonus (hybrid ranged armour)4. Ranged defence is very low, so ranged attacks in Tombs of Amascut hit hard, but defence matters in very few rooms there10. The legs need 57 Hunter and the full set 72 Hunter; he first thought it also needed 72 Crafting, then learned from chat that the crafting can be paid for, so it is effectively just 72 Hunter1.

Why it works with the Osmumten's fang

The Osmumten's fang rolls accuracy twice, so strength bonus matters less for it while stab bonus matters a lot; he likens the fang to a mini Shadow that rolls stab twice11. Mixed hide is essentially better Bandos for use with the fang8. The strength bonus is not equal to Bandos, so it loses one max hit behind Bandos, but beats Bandos with a fang against something with very high stab defence512.

He concludes that fang users should just wear Mixed hide instead of Bandos, calling Bandos effectively dead content for them417. It is the stronger option over Bandos and over Torva for getting a completion rather than for speed GP, with DPS between the two1. Against Torva, he notes the latter helps face-tank Kephri's hatchlings and zero prayer, while Mixed hide allows about six more Sanfew18. In June 2024 he added that Mixed hide is for Twisted bow setups and Moons gear for Bofa setups: with a Twisted bow it is dramatically better than Bandos and better than a Blue Moon hybrid, but with Blue Moon's strength bonus it can still be better to hybridise in some cases619. He accepts losing a few max hits on Core (Kephri-room) as still worth it20.

It is not good without the fang because it is stab armour with negative bonuses otherwise; he would not use it below 300 invocations or with the Bow of Faerdhinen14.

Use in Tombs of Amascut

Because Mixed hide replaces the ranged armour switch, he wears it instead of Masori, saving two inventory slots for extra potions4. He brings eight restore potions in a 500, up from four or five in his previous teaching stream, which makes the 500 much more relaxed21. In his budget run he had seven and a half restores, double his normal amount, and finished with two left over2223. After first thinking the lower defence made Akkha too dangerous, he concluded the setup made the 500 feel like a 150, and that it is fine because he butterflies Akkha and takes almost no damage2425. He considers it best in slot below Masori for a budget setup, better than Karil's in every way, the only set that matches the Quiver, and possibly better than Masori for a first 500 because of the restores; it is the meta for sub-75 tier gear in the raid226927.

The downside is awkward switching: with two armour pieces used on both sides, he has to swap back into the ranged setup first to keep his inventory set up properly28.
