The Dagannoth Kings are the old classic staple of Old School RuneScape, known as a fairly easy and boring Slayer boss.1 Gnomonkey says the main reason anyone does them is the pets, and recommends doing regular Dagannoths for Slayer until strong gear is available to come back to the kings.2 He rates the fight high B tier in 2022, near the top of B: setting up off-ticks takes some skill but the fight is simple once the method is learned.4 Fighting in one cave while waiting for respawns is F tier, but hopping between two caves with reactive off-ticking of Supreme and Prime is interesting; he says it is one of the only reactive content besides the Inferno.5 He calls his efficient method a "mini Inferno solve" and great practice for the Inferno.1
Pets
There is a pet for each king, each 1/5,000. On paper that is about 125 hours for all three at 120 kills per hour, but in practice it takes longer because of the run and because efficiency drops drastically once one pet is obtained.3 Gnomonkey thinks the Rex pet is super common (everyone grinds Rex as a noob) and a bland little grey dinosaur; Prime is the best of the three pets and better than Supreme, but none are great.6 He placed the pets in D tier initially and later E tier because they are bland and not super rare.6
Method
His method jumps between the DK caves, dramatically speeding up kills.1 Doing all three kings, about 120 king kills per hour is possible.1
Requirements
The fight has about the highest gear requirement of almost any boss because the player is tribrid, especially with an alt account.2 He highly recommends completing the Fremennik elite diary first, as it notes all the bone drops, a significant chunk of the profit.7 Much of the gear can be downgraded, but a Twisted bow is very important for hopping between caves; a Bow of Faerdhinen technically works but is 30% worse DPS.7
Gear
- Initially max ranged with Primordial boots and Berserker ring, with a six-way melee switch (downgrading Torva to Bandos is not a big deal).8
- Zaryte vambraces are absolutely massive, raising max hit from 83 to 86 with the max ranged boost; the boost is smaller without divines (no alt).8
- Blood fury could be used for no max hit loss with Torva but is expensive and unnecessary, and might allow claws instead of the Saradomin godsword, which he has not tested.8
- Harmonised nightmare staff with only the major damage-boosting magic items. An Ancestral set would boost DPS, but trip lengths are limited by prayer potions so he leaves it.9
- A stamina boost on the Max cape reaches the kings (otherwise a stamina potion or Explorer's ring), and a rune pouch with Wrath, Nature and Air runes alches drops with the Tome of fire/water equipped. The Tome must be equipped first in the switch or it removes autocast, and the player must be on the standard spellbook.1010
Supplies with an alt
- Main account: two antidotes, two each of divine super combat and divine ranging, two rune throwing axes to get into the caves, eight prayer potions, Saradomin godsword for sustain and a Max cape (replace it with a construction cape or Relleka teleport if absent).9 He found the alt alone was not enough sustain, hence the godsword.9
- Alt: Graceful with some tank gear (Hitpoints cape, regen bracelet, Bryophyta's staff), three sets of divines, two extra antidotes, a stamina potion, an emergency brew and fourteen extra prayer potions (one a restore if bringing the brew).11 It also brings a Relleka teleport and cosmic, astral, blood, body and law runes for Heal Other, Energy Transfer and Dream. The highest requirement is 91 Magic for Energy Transfer, though an alt without it can still carry supplies.11 He thinks Dream and Heal Other provide plenty of HP, though Guthan's could heal in theory.12
- Turn the NPC Aggression Timer plugin on for the alt before arriving, or it will not work.13
Supplies without an alt
Downgrade the Harmonised staff and bring a special weapon if available, since Spinolyps can drain prayer; bring about three regular ranging and super combat potions (no spare HP for divines) and Sanfew serums for prayer and antidote effect.14 It takes some flicking to get through a task.14 The player needs a pet rock, two rune throwing axes, an emergency brew, Saradomin godsword, Imbued heart, an Explorer's ring for the run and alching, and a pouch with Blood, Death and Soul runes on Ancients for Blood Barrage healing on Rex.13
The run
He calls this one of the longest and hardest runs for any boss.13
- Prep a stamina dose on the main, teleport both accounts to Relleka with the alt following, go to Waterbirth Island and into the cave, and camp prayer on both accounts.15
- In the first cave stand on both pressure plates to open the door, run past the crabs and use a rune throwing axe special attack on the barricade; the axes can then be dropped.15
- Prayer: ladder down praying magic, next ladder ranged, past the crabs melee, ranged past the Dagannoths, magic against the wall of Sulki (Slashers/Spinolyps area), melee past the crabs, spec-transferring from the alt for the final burst of run energy.16
- At the end pray melee past the lobsters, pass the DK trapdoors and stand in the safe corner on both accounts. The alt rests there; once he loses aggro after about ten minutes he sits in front of the route to Heal Other and spec-transfer the main.17
- Hop worlds at the crack until neither cave has adventurers.18
Recovering from death
DKs is one of the most dangerous places to die. Gnomonkey died during the trip and used it to show recovery.19 The grave stays in the lair and there are fifteen minutes to return, which he says is plenty, despite stories of people paying over 30m to retrieve items from Death's coffer.20 To recover, grab a pet rock, throwing axes, prayer potions and food, run the same route, go down praying ranged and wait until Prime is not at the grave, then right-click the grave and loot, going up and down to equip gear and drop items.20 A second death while grabbing items likely sends them to the coffer, so the player should not panic.21
Drops and profit
The kings' main drops are the rings, but only the Berserker ring (2.2m at the time) and Archers ring (about 4m) have value; he does not know why the Archers ring is valued, as it is nearly useless.21 At an average of about 27k gp per king, 120 kills per hour comes to about 3.2m gp per hour before supplies, which he says is higher than he expected.2 Regular drops, mainly bones, add up and the Harmonised staff cuts supply costs, though it is still not cheap.3
