The Voidwaker is a melee special attack weapon whose special attack ignores accuracy checks, making it a bypass for very tanky targets. Gnomonkey liked it as a weapon that "fits in so well among the other spec weapons without stepping on their toes"7, and it provides 5 magic attack, which he finds very nice for the melee Inferno setup3. He expected it to be strong at Nex8 and used it there, including on a late attempt at a sub-20 solo Nex kill9.

From December 2023 the Voidwaker is the subject of a proposed nerf in Jagex's Project Rebalance blogs, which Gnomonkey consistently opposes. He regards the change as the most questionable decision in the blog1011, and in April 2024 argues that Jagex should leave the special attack alone and let it bypass accuracy12. After the Nex defence change in June 2024 he no longer brings it to Nex1314. By 2026 he describes the as an okay stab weapon with a very good special attack15.

Role as a DPS special attack

Gnomonkey says the Voidwaker slots in "beautifully" in the PvM meta5:

The point of a DPS special attack is a highly accurate and powerful hit, which is why the Voidwaker is useful; the Zaryte crossbow sees far more use than the other options simply because it hits so high16. Various bosses have damage modifiers that prevent Voidwaker use, such as Akkha, Vasa and the Olm melee hand16. The Voidwaker's special has a max hit of only about 80, compared with 110 for a dragon dagger special1. In 2026 he notes it hits "well over 80" with 10% more damage15.

His view that it was good on the Nightmare, Kephri and Nex17 reflects the weapon's purpose: it bypasses defence on very tanky targets rather than rolling against it18.

The nerf

  • December 2023 blog. The blog's stated reason is that guaranteed hits that ignore accuracy checks in PvM make it difficult to design worthwhile special attack DPS weapons in future without creeping upwards significantly5. Gnomonkey assumed it was a PvP nerf, but the blog did not mention PvP10. He worries it signals that Jagex will focus on extremely tanky bosses that cannot be drained, like Tombs of Amascut19.
  • April 17, 2024 proposal. The special attack no longer ignores accuracy but rolls with +200% accuracy against the target's slash or magic defence, whichever is lower20. Gnomonkey says this makes the weapon useless at all locations, effectively replacing it with Dragon claws, which are worse in no way. It stays good only against very tanky targets with high magic and slash defence such as Kephri and Nex21. He still uses it at Chambers of Xeric Challenge Mode, where high magic level and slash defence are bypassed22. He argues it deserves to be good because it drops in pieces from the Wilderness bosses at a very rare rate, and if it is useless no one, not even the bots, will kill them4. Feedback from Mod Goblin showed Jagex was unsure about the change11.
  • April 18, 2024 second blog. Jagex raised the bonus from +200% (triple accuracy) to 400% (five times accuracy) after feedback that it had barely any use next to the Zaryte crossbow or Dragon claws6. Gnomonkey says 400% still leaves it under 60% accurate on current best-in-slot locations23, and calls the revision taking it "from completely useless to completely useless" at Kephri, Nex and Chambers of Xeric24. When rolling against defence, claws are better because they max higher and are already very accurate against slash, and the Zaryte crossbow is also available1812. Raising the number to +600%, 800% or 1000% is not the answer12. He feels one Jagex mod is obsessed with nerfing the Voidwaker and that nobody wants it nerfed23, and thinks the designer misunderstands its purpose in PvM17. If the number stays, players will bring claws23.
  • June 2024. After Nex's defence change he calls the Voidwaker "in the bin" for Nex; it is no longer worth bringing as the old standard setup, and the Zaryte crossbow is the better damage spec1314.

Uses

  • It one-shots all the monkey room monsters at Tombs of Amascut and is four-tick, so he uses it there25.
  • In the Wardens' phase 2 it is his whack weapon, with a dragon dagger for the spec25.
  • The special counts as magic damage, so using it does not end Ba-Ba's boulder phase and can be used during boulder throwing for free damage2. With a Voidwaker there is no point in using BGS on Ba-Ba because the Voidwaker spec replaces it; without one, BGS is worth it26. Claws are probably worth bringing only if they are the only DPS spec, as they are much worse than the Voidwaker26.
  • After using the weapon on the stab style, switch back to its normal style, because its max hit is lower on stab2.
  • Gnomonkey jokes that an Iron Man should not have to grind bosses just to get a Voidwaker to click a blue orb for 23 damage1.
  • In 2026 his team was dry on Void Wakers: a teammate had a very unlucky grind but got one, and Gnomonkey received a second corrupted Void Waker from the Colosseum27.
