Stats and numbers

  • The Crystal extractor nerf took its XP rate from about 34,000 XP per hour down to about 14,000 XP per hour.1

Tips

  • Players were forced to remove the Crystal extractor and rebuild it in the correct spot, wasting 2 million gp, because it must be interacted with based on its location and cannot be moved.2
  • A common high-XP Salvaging routine is hitting the extractor every single minute for about 36k XP per hour while crewmates pull up salvage, then sorting the cargo hold.3

Gnomonkey's opinion

  • Gnomonkey considers the Crystal extractor a core balance problem: an option giving 34k XP per hour for one click per minute that works at every Sailing location sets a minimum XP for everything, so slower methods get buffed a lot and faster methods much less.4
  • Gnomonkey says he would have made the Crystal extractor give a boost only at Gwenith Glide, possibly zero XP elsewhere but passive crystal shards, and made other methods faster by default instead of propping everything up with the extractor.5
  • Gnomonkey says Jagex could easily calculate the extractor's output (600 XP 60 times per hour) before release, yet put it in, nerfed it and did not spread the XP anywhere else.6

Events

  • The Crystal extractor's XP per harvest was cut from 600 XP to 250 XP in the Sailing week 2 update.7
  • Jagex had said in the previous week's news post that they would probably nerf the Crystal extractor and spread the XP around.7
