Sailing is Old School RuneScape's first new skill, released on 19 November 20251. Gnomonkey covered it from the April 2025 alpha through the May 2026 blog changes: he praises its boat systems, quests and art, but repeatedly criticises its training methods, combat and lack of endgame reasons to train it, and as of March 2026 calls it "pretty good" as a skill with bad, tacked-on combat2.
Alpha (April 2025)
- The alpha showed rough training methods but was missing combat and several methods3. Gnomonkey summarises the alpha methods as cargo missions with Slayer-like tasks, "Woodcutting 2" (salvaging) and a janky Sepulchre4.
- Jagex said a couple more methods would come later in a "Forestry part two" way, including a Slayer and Hunter combination of hunting leviathans and a mini raid; both were confirmed not to be in the release4.
- Gnomonkey was very impressed with the alpha, found the core boat mechanics okay and said the skill had a long way to go5. He liked ship turning, the sail speed boost and the whirlpool speed boost, but said the way the skill is trained "is just not it"6. He had no issue with any single method, or with slow AFK methods existing, but did not want them to be the only or primary way to train7.
- He said Sailing would arrive whether players wanted it or not because it passed the poll, so the best approach was to look for ways to improve it8. He argued it must launch fleshed out rather than being fixed 6 to 12 months later, as with Forestry9, and warned that uninteresting training methods after day-one hype would lose a large share of supporters10.
- He said Sailing would not feel like Old School RuneScape and that this is acceptable11, did not want it to repeat the mistake of many RuneScape 3 skills of simply not being good12, and wanted further alphas including one showing combat13.
Launch contents
Per the October 2025 blog as relayed by Gnomonkey, Sailing launches with:
- Shipbuilding and ship upgrades, like player-owned-house upgrades for the ship, using different materials and requiring Construction and Sailing14.
- Crew and multiplayer: up to 10 NPCs can be asked to join the crew and friends can sail on the boat, with the blog saying up to five crewmates14.
- Ship combat, which had a beta Gnomonkey tried hands-on14.
- Sailing XP earned by successfully interacting with boat facilities, the simplest being trimming the sails for a speed boost15.
- New quests, areas and resources, including new mining rocks and thieving, and new training methods for Woodcutting, Hunter and Fishing16.
- Unique items: a teleport to boat spell, the gleaming rapier (like the zombie axe for stab) and the Horn of Plenty (boosts Hunter), both from the new Griffin boss, and the Aqua Knight Hopper, which double bolt shots17. Gnomonkey says the new weapons and armour are nothing super high level and mostly flesh out the mid-game17.
The September 2025 blog covered new Slayer creatures and unique drops, many of them returning from RuneScape 31819. It also announced stress testing before launch and a feedback survey20.
Training methods
See also Port tasks, Salvaging, Barracuda Trials, Deep sea trawling and Charting.
- Port tasks: cargo or delivery missions to NPCs across the sea, or combat missions such as killing a number of monsters321. Up to five port tasks can be stored at once, each requiring a Sailing level21. Gnomonkey compares them to Motherlode Mine: not super high intensity but not AFK22, and likes that five can be held at once, unlike one-at-a-time Slayer21.
- Salvaging: pulling up salvage from shipwrecks for loot, "just like mining or woodcutting"22. The alpha had two-tick salvaging, found by a player called HeBox, using a three-tick action with two rolls23. At launch Gnomonkey describes it as two rolls every four ticks, because the player does a three-tick action but must step away and back, wasting a tick24. He thinks it may be the XP meta but is not sure24. In November 2025 he calls salvaging his favourite thing about Sailing and maybe the most AFK activity in the game25.
- Barracuda Trials: boat races collecting cargo for a bonus; Gnomonkey calls them a Sailing version of the Hallowed Sepulchre26. In the alpha he said they were theoretically the best XP method but looked janky, and that they were the thing he was most excited for2728. In the October 2025 beta he again found them janky but not terrible, expecting refinement26. In April 2026 he calls them fast but repetitive29.
- Deep sea trawling: a Fishing Trawler-like activity catching large groups of fish, including a new best healing fish and one needed for anti-bleed wraps16. He says the fishing shoals give about 5k Sailing XP an hour and 20k Fishing XP an hour, which he calls weak and unbalanced30.
- Charting: one-time XP for reaching a new area, aimed at completionists and cloggers rather than a real training method31; compared to lamps and not a long-term method26.
- Cannonball thieving: the new stall needs 87 Thieving and gives about 230k XP an hour, but he says spam-clicking Knights of Ardougne gives the same XP and more money30.
Overall he rates the launch offering as not enough for training but acceptable for a launch, comparing the whole offering to the amount of Mining content3233. He notes a good spread of intensity (click-intensive racing, AFK or tick-manipulated trawling, cargo missions in between) while finding the methods not very engaging33. In April 2026 he says Sailing needs newer ways to train, finding the bounty task system annoying and salvaging very boring and AFK, though most people choose it29.
Preparation and economy
- Jagex's preparation list covered items (logs, planks, swamp tar, flax, cannonballs, rope, swamp paste, coins, nails), quests and skills34. Many items are used to upgrade the ship, and flax is used for sails34. Gnomonkey assumes the listed quests unlock docks at different ports, such as a dock off Prifddinas and a Lunar Isle dock35. Crafting 73 is needed for upgrades such as fishing nets and sails36.
- Advice he attributes to Modelena, whom he describes as the lead of the Sailing project: mains must decide whether to make or spend money at release, since rushing 99 will be costly until prices settle37. Mains who want to make money should get Sailing high enough to farm the resources rushers will need38. Ironmen should expect to do much more than Sailing, because upgrading the boat is key38; Gnomonkey infers this means hundreds, maybe thousands, of planks and other resources38.
- Gnomonkey says casual players do not need 99 Sailing: the 70s or 80s unlock almost all content, and rushing to 99 is expensive and gains little39.
Boats and combat
- He considers the boat movement not as tight as normal game movement but solid, refined from the beta, and never sails into land40. A direct diagonal is slightly slower, and well-timed speed boosts, which can be stored, give snappy movement41.
- He praises the art and animations42, the quests (including Current Affairs, each under half an hour)43, the facilities and upgrades that give a sense of progression like building a player-owned house44, and the truly unlimited ale keg45.
- In the October 2025 beta, ship combat felt janky and strange, though runnable for release15. In December 2025 he calls overhauling combat, which Jagex admitted does not feel good, an extremely high priority46 and says Jagex cannot add interesting PvM content on boats until combat is fixed47.
- January 2026 roadmap: cannons are affected by ranged gear, players get double cannonballs per bar, and regular weapons deal full normal damage48. Gnomonkey thinks this is probably the best direction available, working fine though not amazing49.
- March 2026 update: an attractor facility saves roughly 60 percent of cannonballs; cannons fire slower (seven-tick attack speed) with higher max hits; veiled Krakens add a source of the dragon cannon barrel at roughly 1 in 1,000 per the wiki; off-boat attacks such as a Tumeken's shadow now deal full damage to sea monsters without a cap5051. Sea monsters were given roughly 25 percent more health to keep kills per hour similar52. Gnomonkey says health at sea is extremely high and combat feels sluggish53, and that simply cutting health would roughly double bounty-task XP and might make bounty tiles the XP meta54.
- Monster data he lists from the wiki: Albatross feathers for the Gale catcher drop at 1 in 29 with 179 health (five needed); Manta rays drop Ray barbs at 1 in 16 with 225 health (about eight needed for the best trawling net)55; Narwhal horn drops at 1 in 100 from 220-health monsters; Great white sharks, which drop for the best salvaging hook, have 243 hit points55; Armored Krakens drop the bottled storm item at 1 in 1,000, and the new dragon cannon barrel source has 225 health at roughly 1 in 1,00056.
- He says combat feels tacked on and should have been a "part two" rather than launching with the skill257, but that no combat items are mandatory and there are many ways to train outside bounty tasks58. He sees a possible future in Leviathan hunting, pirate-ship jumping combat or mini raids, requiring a careful rework59.
- April 2026 pirate update: Jagex said it balances content on XP per hour, GP per hour and unique drops60, and said on Reddit that combat is intentionally not a viable way to train Sailing, so it is balanced around rewards61. The update adds a sail cosmetic system and a pirate flag drop6263. Gnomonkey argued Jagex should hit the brakes on combat and fix existing problems64, that the pirates risk becoming a legacy fight65, and that more charting and methods beyond Barracuda Trials are a better use of effort66.
Drops and items
- December 2025 published rates, as relayed: Belle's folly (Bell's Folly) is a 1/400 drop from a task-only boss that needs 80 points to unlock the Griffin boss, a Sailing level and several quests67; Great Watch Sharks have a 1/1,023 chance and Armoured Krakens 1/256 to roll their dragon table68; Bottled Storm is 1/1,024 and the Vampire Kraken 1/51269; the dragon cannon barrel is 1 in 20,000 from opulent salvage70.
- Jagex fixed a bug in which Sailing creatures were not rolling their dragon tables, effectively buffing those rates71. Gnomonkey complained the rates were published without balancing71 and that very rare drops were not made more attainable72.
- On 4 December 2025 Jagex confirmed that various Sailing items were bugged and dropped more often than the published rates, chose not to fix it, and said it would update with the real numbers73. Gnomonkey called this finally a good bug74.
- He thinks Aqua Knights might be the best Sailing addition because they drop a good amount of seeds, while the hopper is trash needing a big buff and lava strike worms are skipped75. He questions unlocking frost dragons at 87 Sailing, saying they give poor Slayer XP and loot only for the boat75.
- January 2026: Jagex extends the Griffin and raises its weight, adding combat achievements to make Bell's Folly more like a zombie axe, without buffing the rapier's rate. Gnomonkey dislikes this and says the rapier should be about 1 in 1007677.
Post-launch changes
- Week 2 update: Sailing creatures were given smart pathing without a mention in the news post, so no Sailing NPC can be safe-spotted, none can be attacked while under the boat, and all hit at all times7879. Gnomonkey calls this a further nerf and says Sailing is worse than in week 17880. He lists unaddressed QOL requests: moving objects on the ship, a bank in the boat building area, a UI button for the Crystal extractor, and better clickboxes for sails81. He also says servers had been very unstable since the Grid Master release82.
- He asks whether players trend toward AFK methods because salvage XP is too high or because courier missions, bounty tasks, deep sea fishing and Barracuda Trials are not engaging, and says Jagex should fix that rather than nerf salvage8384. He adds that he is not upset about the nerfs because he can now start "lamping" Sailing85.
- January 2026: the Sailing blog adds a new Barracuda trial and a player-designed island76. Hedron believes Sailing failed on its combat half and prefers a PvM island because the Sailing map gives open space8687.
- May 2026 blog: port tasks get a 10 to 15% Sailing XP boost; courier tasks get loot sacks with shipbuilding materials; a bug blocking two cargoes of the same type is fixed88. Bounty tasks get higher Sailing-specific drop chances, are longer on average, and every sea creature gets a dedicated port with a permanent bounty89. Gnomonkey says this makes bounty tasks Slayer where you pick the task89. Sailing items drop more often from armoured Kraken, Vampire Kraken, Failed Kraken and Great White Shark, and dragon cheats are added to orcas90. Gnomonkey hopes the buffs are in the 20 to 40% range90. Also: cannon auto-retaliate and mapped solo spawns of high-level sea creatures91, movable facilities in the side panel92, a spec-button option to release wind modes while at the helm93, movable interfaces94, and looting improvements being explored95.
Gnomonkey's opinion
- Reason to train: the biggest argument against Sailing is the lack of reason to train it, since it unlocks nothing endgame beyond new potions and foods96. He wants an endgame method, better Slayer tasks and good methods for other skills97, and says players most want a reason to train beyond the 99 cape98.
- Undertuned unlocks: he thinks what Sailing unlocks feels undertuned99 and often the same as or worse than base game content100.
- Integration: Sailing sits inside its own bubble, with nothing flowing out to the rest of the game101; he suggests Sailing seeds, bars, planks and logs as drops on non-Sailing monsters102 and says a player who did not know of the release would see no change in gameplay103.
- High-level players: the launch is mostly low to mid-level content, a big reason for the hate camp104105. He asked for post-launch content for high levels, such as the mini sailing raid or a more dangerous boss106, a full roadmap107, and at least one higher-level boss108. He believes higher-level content is planned about six months after launch105.
- Launch predictions (October 2025): he predicted bugs and mis-tuned methods, as with Invention in RS3109, a fun first week followed by problems with shallow training methods110, and worried that XP rates may be too slow107.
- Feedback: Jagex will not repoll Sailing, so he asks detractors for specific feedback instead of saying they hate it111. He gave feedback that he does not want to farm seaweed all day112.
- Later view: in March 2026 he calls Sailing one of the better major update releases despite major issues113, but does not agree it was a solid release worth paying more for114. On his Hardcore Ironman the April update would not make him start training it115. He thinks Sailing needs careful long-term thought rather than band-aid fixes116.
- He would be fine with a group Kraken-style boss as a skilling method47 and wants a new Barracuda Trial, since only three exist117.
