The Hallowed Sepulchre is a five-floor agility minigame in Darkmire that was added with the Sins of the Father quest. Gnomonkey calls it objectively the fastest agility XP in the game and the best agility training method for gp, and regards it as one of his favorite skilling updates12.
Overview
- The Sepulchre is similar to Pyramid Plunder in that a timer locks the player out of looting coffins if too slow, but it is mechanically challenging on top of that1.
- Gnomonkey equates its difficulty to a decently difficult boss such as Vorkath or Zulrah, requiring a lot of effort and practice3. In 2020 he said it practically turns Agility into a boss and is great practice for movement useful in places like raids and the Inferno4.
- He found it fun enough to play 12 hours a day without getting bored, despite typically only doing AFK methods3, and did 92 to 99 Agility there4.
- In 2025 he stated that Agility is his favorite skill besides combat only because of the Sepulchre, which he calls interactive and engaging. He considers Agility just rooftops until level 52 and then the Sepulchre all the way to 99, and would like mini Sepulchre-style activities earlier and more methods at higher levels56. See also Rooftop Agility courses.
- Mod Husky, lead developer on the Sepulchre, commented that he would like to see more agility XP for completing mini challenges but felt it was in a fairly good place; Gnomonkey said he would not oppose a buff7.
Requirements
- The Sepulchre is in Darkmire and requires Sins of the Father to be completed8.
- Floor requirements (2020): five floors, from level 52 Agility for floor one to level 92 for floor five8; in 2020 he gave floor 3 as the entry point from level 72, floor 4 at 82 and floor 5 at 924910.
- Looting any coffin needs at least 66 Thieving; certain coffins also need 54 Prayer, 56 Construction and a high Magic level, with the highest enchant jewelry spell being best (93 Magic for the top one)11. The prayer coffins are not on floor five, so Prayer could possibly be skipped, but he likes to loot floor four as well12.
- Update (June 2026, Summer Sweep-up): floor 4 now needs 77 Agility (was 82) and floor 5 needs 87 (was 92). Players can now boost for floor entry, so a level 72 player could eat a summer pie at the end of floor three to enter floor four, making the earliest entry to floor five 82 instead of 92. Floor five's grand hallowed coffin will require either 84 Thieving or 92 Agility to open131415.
Gear and inventory
- Equipment: full Graceful, a Mithril grapple, a Dorgeshuun crossbow (the lightest crossbow, relevant because several heavy rune platebody drops can be received) and a Saradomin stole. Eventually a hallowed ring, focus, grapple and symbol help with looting coffins.
- Inventory: a saw and hammer (hallowed hammer once bought), a decent stack of rune nails, runes for the highest enchant jewelry spell, eight mahogany planks (two per bridge), a strange old lockpick, and about four vampyre dust with a hallowed symbol (more without it; each shrine takes two dust, or one with the symbol), plus a slot for hallowed marks. He does not use a rune pouch because coffins give blood, soul and cosmic runes he does not want to place in it; with a lower Magic level he would bring the pouch.
- A Saradomin item (stole, Book of Law, Holy Symbol) or any hallowed item restores run energy between floors12, so stamina potions are not needed; an Explorer's ring might help if the recharge is forgotten on floor five18.
- Strange old lockpicks cost about 175k when recorded17.
- After entering, the mysterious stranger gives five hallowed crystal shards that teleport back to the Sepulchre; more cost one mark each, and he recommends keeping some in the bank19. Wearing Vyre noble robes while running through Darkmire avoids attacks from the Vyrewatch19.
Mechanics
Getting damaged by a trap sends the player back to a checkpoint unless stated otherwise; each trap type has three variants that become more common deeper in20.
- Sword traps: Saradomin sword traps are thrown by a giant statue and cover nine tiles. The regular variant (floors 1-2) moves at two tiles per tick, the blessed variant (floor 3) at three, and the giant blue variant (floors 4-5) at four21. They are passed by running through in a free moment, using blue teleporters, or running around using tile markers22.
- Teleporter tiles: appear on every floor in clumps of nine, active four ticks at a time. Yellow tiles teleport backwards and blue tiles forward. Both give roughly two ticks of invulnerability to traps (his estimate). Running over a teleporter from the tile before it avoids it entirely, and he lays out tile placements to hit more blue than yellow2324.
- Lightning: floors 4 and 5 only; stuns for about two ticks instead of sending the player to a checkpoint. It can be avoided by standing on the tile before the first spot and running through (checkerboard pattern). Walking diagonally through is safe, but in the last section he runs straight through every time2425.
- Crossbow statues: come in groups of three, fire at three tiles per tick. The plain variant on floors 1-2 fires from one statue at a time; gold-trim variants on floors 3-5 fire two bolts at once randomly and cannot be run through even with perfect timing. The statues' animation shows the next pattern. To avoid a pattern, click two tiles ahead to keep running speed2526.
- Flame wizard statues: cannot be run through; scorch marks show where flames hit. All have a four-tick delay between attacks. Stone statues (floors 1-2) fire a three-tick flame in the same direction each time; golden-trim statues (floors 3-4) last three ticks but run cycles; blue-and-gold statues (floor 5) last two ticks with long, complicated cycles27. Counting rule: stone, wait three ticks then run; golden, count the flames three times then run; golden-blue, count two times then run28. A bug making flames start a tick late was fixed by Jagex, so fire can be counted by tick rate28.
- Timer and layout: the timer pauses on taking the stepping stone to the next floor or crossing to the Grand Hallowed Coffin29. Running out of time only prevents looting; agility XP and pet chance are still earned, so he never resets by logging out30. Floors reset on entry unless another player is present, since the Sepulchre is not instanced; other players can occasionally help but mostly waste time, so a low-population world with low ping is advised2931.
- Floor variants: floors 1 and 2 have four variants each (north, east, south, west), floors 3 and 4 have two that converge, and floor 5 has one32.
Coffins and challenges
- Coffin mini challenges can be failed but never send the player back28. Loot scales with depth; earlier coffins have a similar table with more junk and fewer hallowed marks (one per coffin on floor one), while later coffins give rune items, large piles of blood and soul runes, ranarr weed and seeds and four to six hallowed marks3334. In 2020 he typically only did coffin challenges on floors four and five34.
- Lockpicking has a small chance to fail and poison for two damage; a strange old lockpick reduces the chance further and the Hallowed ring outheals the poison35.
- Grapple: failure is common and wastes about five ticks, as it requires grappling across and back; the hallowed grapple raises success36.
- Portal frame: cast an enchant jewelry spell, float across, lockpick and float back; a second failure cracks the portal. With level 7 enchant he never cracked a portal and failed once in about fifty runs with the Hallowed focus; with Onyx Enchant he failed once in ten with the focus37. He recommends a lava staff and skipping Zenyte Enchant once the focus is owned38.
- Bridge: two planks and five nails; each failure wastes about one tick and bends five nails. He uses runite nails, and mahogany planks for extra Construction XP3839.
- Brazier: cannot fail; two vampyre dust (one with the symbol) gives 60 Prayer XP per dust39.
- Floor five's portal challenge is almost always taken, as its coffins are very rewarding for money and marks40. With over a minute left at the end of floor five he takes the bridge coffin before the final stepping stones and portal41. The timer can read zero seconds and still allow the Grand Coffin41. Afterward, quick exit via the obelisk restarts at the lobby42.
Training advice
- Early on, skip coffins to have time to finish, then add coffins starting from the end of the run backwards43. He recommends slow runs copying his tile markers, laying out every marker on floor five3044.
- Floor 5 is the hardest and longest floor with three total levels, and its last section is the hardest single section; it took many run-throughs to do consistently4546. Its fire statues stay active only two ticks, so counting is twice, not three times44. Floor 5 is often warped by other players because it is the only variant44.
- In 2020 he listed route notes for floors 1 to 5: floor one north and south4748, floor two north and west4950, floor three515253, floor four54555645 and floor five405758.
- Gnomonkey says only the very last part of floor 5 needs intense focus59. In 2026 he said each floor higher is worth about 10k Agility XP an hour more, with most of the fun and XP at floor five; the 72 to 82 stretch on floor three is a slog1415.
- Fletching: bolt tipping suited the Sepulchre better than rapid fletching, since time spent waiting for traps can be AFK tipping. He could tip about 1,000 bolts per five-floor run, adding 50k GP profit and 7k Fletching XP per run, about 50k XP an hour and 350k extra GP an hour. It needs a large cash stack and time for Grand Exchange offers (buy limits typically 11,000)6061. See Fletching.
Rates
| Source | XP/hr | GP/hr |
|---|---|---|
| 2020-06-14 (just after an XP-lowering update of about 10k/hr) | 70k looting five coffins plus the Grand Coffin; 80k skipping all coffins | about 1.5M without rare drops; 2.8M with a 50M Ring of endurance at 1/256 (2.25M at a 30M ring) |
| 2020-07-25 floor 3 at level 72 | about 65k without looting | n/a |
| 2020-07-25 floor 4 at level 82 | about 70k (65k looting) | 700k-1M looting floors 3 and 4 |
| 2020-07-25 floor 5 at level 92 | 80-85k looting floors 4 and 5; 90-95k Grand Coffin only (very fast players) | about 3.5M for a very fast player, about 25 hours per Ring of Endurance |
The ring figure is stated differently across 2020 videos: the first assumes a 1/256 drop from the final coffin62, the later one a 1 in 200 chance from the grand coffin, ring worth about 60m, about 150m (roughly 2.5 rings) between 92 and 9910. Earlier 2020 figures: 70k XP/hr after the nerf and about two days straight of practice before consistent rates3363.
In 2020 Gnomonkey said Sepulchre GP beats Vorkath because supply cost is very low, but is inconsistent since the money comes mostly from ring drops10. Hallowed marks buy the Dark Graceful outfit and Dark Swirl recolor4; see Hallowed marks.
Records and milestones
- Dark Graceful recolor: just over a hundred Grand Coffin loots, with about twelve fails64.
- Grand Coffin looted 485 times by level 99, with about 20 failed runs while learning10. He planned to go for the Agility pet there after 99 as the best pet chance before the penguin course59.
- A bug let a player lowered to one HP and wearing the hallowed ring run through traps without being hit or teleported back. Records set this way still stand on the board, which Gnomonkey says makes them impossible to beat legitimately; the bug also affected max XP rates. He maintains the Sepulchre is the best XP in the game6566. See Bug abuse.
Gnomonkey's opinion
- XP and gp rates are tremendously better than any other agility method, but not without practice63. Lower floors have lower rates; in 2020 he thought it only worth doing at 92 Agility, though lower-level rates were untested11, and later said level 72 is where it becomes efficient, starting at floor 3, looting only floor 3 at first4.
- He does not consider it overpowered and asked Jagex not to nerf it, as it is one of the most difficult skilling methods and most value is ring drops59.
- In the 2022 PvM boss tier list he called it the agility boss and very good content that pushes movement to its limits, with floor 5 great for its high skill cap and some of the best scaling money in the game. He placed it in A tier, just below Nex, noting that the placement is arbitrary as it is not a boss676869.
- In 2026 he noted that the update lets players skip the floor 3 slog and joked it is an excuse to burn through summer pies15.
