Methods

  • Odablock's Wilderness plan was to find a player fighting a boss, freeze them, then DD under them with crossbows out and step away on the same tick the boss's attack procs so the boss hits the target.1
  • To land this, you must catch the freeze immediately on entering the area, so Odablock says to turn on Augury, find the target and freeze right away; make sure skull prevention is off.2
  • Odablock tells Gnomonkey to bolt the target, DD under, and run at the last tick so the target keeps getting hit by the boss's circles.3

Stats and numbers

  • In Leagues 5 the Wilderness Echo boss is King Black Dragon, which drops the Thunder khopesh (a souped-up Voidwaker that calls a double lightning attack on spec and AoE lightning on auto attacks) and the Thousand-dragon ward (an Avernic-like shield with decent defensive stats that protects from all status effects).4
  • The Leagues 5 Wilderness region includes the Chaos Altar for rapid Prayer training, black chinchompas, dark crabs, zombie pirates and buffed Wilderness Agility.5
  • Gnomonkey and Odablock's first kill with this method was worth about 400k, the next was about 697k and the following one about 849k.6
  • A kill in Callisto's cave was worth at least a million, reported as about 1.2 million.7
  • Their last Wilderness kill brought the loot to about 687k, putting the total at several million for Gnomonkey's Colosseum run.8

Tips

  • Gnomonkey warns that in Leagues 5 many builds can kill you in a single game tick and that the Wilderness will likely be much more active than in the last Leagues.5
  • In the Wilderness boss fights, protect from melee when the boss is near you, and protect from range when it is not.9
  • After missing about four kills to splashing, Gnomonkey and Odablock invested in better mage bonus gear, with Odablock suggesting Mystic robes, so they could actually cast and land freezes.10

Gnomonkey's opinion

  • Gnomonkey rates Venenatis' pet B tier: it is a big red spider, only 1 in 2,000, one of the easier Wilderness pets since it is at a low Wilderness level and killed faster than other Wilderness bosses, and it is easy to escape PKers but not easy to alt.11
  • Gnomonkey says Callisto's pet is annoying to get (you get PKed all the time) but luring on an alt between two worlds is not that slow; it needs a slayer task, is 1 in 2,000, and he rates it B tier, above Venenatis.12
  • Gnomonkey says Vet'ion's pet is one of the rarest Wilderness pets that almost nobody has, since killing him above level 30 Wilderness in multi-combat means you cannot teleport and clans can kill you, and he rates it the best Wilderness pet but in B tier like the others.13
  • Gnomonkey says Scorpia's pet is the easiest Wilderness boss pet to get after the Chaos Elemental, about 20 hours with a Harmonised staff and an alt, and it can be boosted with around 10 people; he rates it high C tier.14
  • Gnomonkey says the Wilderness in 2007 was the RuneScape stomping ground, but is much less populated now due to a changing playerbase, a lack or surplus of updates and focus on the wrong areas; he notes it has been notoriously difficult for the Jagex team to improve.15
  • Gnomonkey says with gravestones now in the game the Wilderness is really the only location that still has a risk mechanic, and he thinks the reward should always be gold or saving gold, encouraging risking items for more money.16
  • Gnomonkey says the Wilderness is not his cup of tea but is a great choice for overall points for Dragon cup grinding, and the Thunder khopesh is amazing for Wilderness Slayer tasks.4

Trivia

  • The Wilderness is the only place in the game where players can attack others and take their items, making it by default the most dangerous area; it gets more dangerous deeper, with a higher level range of players that can attack you and teleports prevented past level 20 Wilderness (some unique teleports work up to level 30).17
  • The Wilderness has multi-combat areas (multiple people can attack a single target) and single-combat areas (one-on-one only), and Old School added content like Wilderness bosses, the Chaos Altar, black chinchompa hunting and revenants.16
