Farming is a skill topic that Gnomonkey covers in 5 videos between 2025-03-26 and 2026-06-04. This article is a stub: his statements are grouped by type, repeated ones merged.

Requirements

  • The very high Farming level in the Sailing prep (92) is needed to plant the new rosewood hardwood trees.1

Stats and numbers

  • The blog adds corals that can be farmed underwater (compared by Gnomonkey to giant seaweed), used in potions, and new hop seeds: flax, hemp and cotton, used mostly to make nets and ship supplies.2
  • The new corals take two hours 40 minutes to grow, compared with about 40 minutes for seaweed, according to Gnomonkey.3
  • The new hop seeds take 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes to grow, similar to herb runs, and Gnomonkey thinks some will be worth growing for profit on a herb run.3
  • The new hardwood trees take a long time to respawn and will not replace teaks for XP, but could be profitable at 1.5 tick because people need the logs for Sailing; Gnomonkey likes that it is a choice between profit and max XP.4
  • The rosewood tree needs level 92 Farming, which Gnomonkey says is really high, and he is curious how much XP it gives.5
  • A lot of new Farming content for Sailing sits in the 70s, including potion materials, new coral to farm for new potions, and cotton-like flax crops used to upgrade sails.1
  • According to the blog's estimates, the coral changes give about one extra frag at 77 Farming, but about six less at 99 Farming for the first coral, with similar patterns for the other corals: much more at low Farming, less at 99.6

Tips

  • Farming, Woodcutting and Construction together are needed to get the full upgrades out of your ship; pushing Farming to 92 lets you plant rosewood trees.7
  • Gnomonkey suggests farming patches get a darker shade when composted, with the shade deepening up to ultracompost, so players can tell at a glance that a patch has been composted.8
  • Gnomonkey wants farmers' stores to sell a spade, since a spade is needed to plant things and dig up dead crops and is the most important farming tool.9

Gnomonkey's opinion

  • Gnomonkey notes trees are excellent XP and only need a brief visit, but take a very long time to grow, whereas snape grass would be far faster to regrow.10
  • Gnomonkey says he does not think players should be encouraged to farm allotment patches and that it would not improve the Farming skill, even though it would be great for XP.11
  • Gnomonkey says Farming is his least favorite skill and that he would skip training it if he could, because he dislikes breaking up content to do runs.12
  • Gnomonkey believes players mostly either love Farming or hate it, with very little in between.12
  • Gnomonkey says trees are currently both the lowest-engagement and highest-XP way to train Farming, and he would like a more interactive method like Tithe Farm.13
  • Gnomonkey says he would prefer more methods like Tithe Farm that give options to players who do not want to do daily chores.14
  • Gnomonkey considers adding an hourly bonus method to Farming a net negative even if it raises XP rates, because it will feel worse to train.15
  • Gnomonkey says he wishes Jagex had invested time in skills that need love, such as Farming, instead of spending all that time making Sailing.15
  • Gnomonkey wants Jagex to add Farming methods like Tithe Farm that are actually fun, such as a plant-based skilling boss or group boss, not just waiting for a plant to grow, clicking once and logging out.16
  • Gnomonkey was concerned that growing would be the only way to get the new corals, but the blog says they will also drop from mobs, which he says is great; he did not want constant seaweed runs on Iron Men.17
  • Currently there is no way to tell that a patch has been composted without running up to the patch and using inspect.9
  • Gnomonkey admits he has never planted coral on any account, and says coral was giving very good herb XP to ironmen and UIMs at high level, which the change targets.18

Events

  • Coral (Sailing-era farming coral) changes: all coral now get six harvest lives, up from four, and the chance to obtain coral frags from their associated thieving chest is reduced to 1 in 20 from 1 in 15, with some behind-the-scenes yield stat adjustments.18
