The Ourania Altar (ZMI) is a runecrafting method Gnomonkey describes as more complicated than other methods but much less intensive1. It has no Runecrafting level requirement, but it scales with level, so a higher level gives more XP and better runes. The chance of better runes only increases every 10 levels, such as 1 to 9 and 9 to 19, all the way up to 9915.
Requirements
Lunar Diplomacy must be completed for the Lunar spellbook, which provides the Ourania Teleport and NPC Contact to repair pouches1. Gnomonkey recommends not starting until the player has high Agility and the Graceful outfit, because the method involves a lot of running1.
Gear
Gnomonkey prioritises run energy bonuses, then defensive bonuses, because so many players are at ZMI that enemies in the dungeon very rarely attack5. His gear was full Graceful, an amulet of glory (a fury is better), a dust battlestaff, a Dragonfire shield (not necessary), and the best defensive shield available5. He also brings an Explorer's ring for run energy restoration and a blessing in case prayer is needed2.
The best-in-slot ring is the Ring of endurance, which came out with the Sins of the Father quest and is obtainable from the Hallowed Sepulchre; it cost around 40 million at the time2. It lets the player use two doses of stamina and reduces run energy drain by 15%, which stacks with Graceful's 30% run recharge bonus2. He calls the drain reduction a unique effect that is incredibly useful at ZMI, so it is the priority if affordable. An imbued ring of suffering is also a good choice for its extra defensive bonuses6.
If the player is hit too hard to keep HP up, Gnomonkey recommends Rapid Heal and Protect from Ranged, praying at the altar between runs; he barely got hit because of the huge number of players there4.
Inventory
The inventory needs a rune pouch with cosmic, astral and mine runes. Cosmic and astral are for NPC Contact and the Ourania Teleport, and mine runes are for opening the bank because they are the cheapest rune in the game. Law runes can be used instead of cosmics, pulling out a cosmic when pouches need repair6. He skips law runes because at least one is almost always crafted at the altar7.
All runecrafting pouches should be brought, as without them a rune is more likely to be missed; they can be obtained in the Abyss, reached with fairy ring code ALR7. He prefers one-dose stamina potions because with vial smashing unlocked at the Barbarian Outpost the remaining potion does not need banking7.
The run
- Set the spellbook to Lunar, cast the Ourania Teleport and go down the ladder to the north; he recommends marking the ladder so it is easier to click8.
- The banker near the ladder offers quick payment deals. Selecting mine runes means a left click on the banker pays twenty runes and opens the bank. Any rune can pay; mine runes cost 3 gp each at the time8.
- At the bank, pull out essence and fill the pouches. A stamina potion lasts about two runs, so pull it out on the second essence withdrawal with a giant pouch, or the first without one9. The ZMI bank is used three times per run with a giant pouch, or two times without9.
- Run to the altar and craft all essence. Each run gives about 25 seconds of AFK time33.
- When pouch essence is used up, teleport back to Ourania and start another run4.
Tips
- Remove placeholders from pouches and the rune pouch, and fill the bank with bank fillers, so crafted runes can be banked quickly9.
- Drop the cheap runes between crafts to improve XP rates, since otherwise essence has to be pulled from the pouches and extra crafts made3.
- Many players follow others to AFK the run to the altar. He recommends using something such as a piece of essence on a player, which improves pathing and prevents getting stuck on geometry. Huge trains of people can be found on world 3273.
Pouch repair
A pouch degrades after about ten trips with the giant pouch, or around thirty-one trips without it4. To repair, use NPC Contact, talk to the Dark Mage and complete his dialogue; afterwards the spell's right-click menu shows the last person contacted, so the player can right-click and choose Dark Mage to save time10. Talking to the Dark Mage in the Abyss to receive the Abyssal book skips a dialogue option when using NPC Contact7.
