Soul Wars is a team minigame entered through a portal in Edgeville. Gnomonkey does not enjoy it as a minigame: he was never fond of Jagex adding it, especially with a pet tied to it, noting that minigames are not his thing but pets are6. He values it for the pet and for early money. The Lil' Creator pet is easy to obtain with an alt in about 30 hours, and he placed it in D tier in 2022 for its giant-mouthed, doofy look3. By 2025 he calls Soul Wars very good money for an ironman, with the runes, gems and ores in the crates useful early on beyond raw gp7.

His standard approach, laid out in 2022, is a two-account method that earns the pet and zeal without playing real games6. The 2022 guide was still accurate in 2024, the only change being that a salve amulet now works8.

Requirements

Soul Wars requires 500 total level, which is why fresh ironmen go there at that level for early gp2.

The two-account method has these requirements: * Main: high Ranged and Agility. Elite Void is helpful9. * Alt: at least 75 Ranged to wield a blowpipe, ideally Rigor unlocked. Elite Void is better than regular ranged armour here but not necessary9. * Locator orb from Dragon Slayer II, the hardest requirement. A Dwarven rock cake can technically be used instead but is much more annoying9.

Gear and inventory

  • The main wears max Ranged gear with Void and wields a dark bow with dragon arrows. He wears Graceful boots and an Archer's ring because he has no Ring of Endurance or Pegasian boots10.
  • The main's inventory holds a blowpipe and the runes for telekinetic grab. The alt's inventory is the same with only a blowpipe, plus the locator orb10.
  • An Ava's assembler on the alt saves more ammo, though an accumulator works fine with a little ammo lost9.
  • Dragon darts on both accounts make the method more lenient. Amethyst darts are perfectly fine to save money1.

Setup

  1. Use the minigame teleport to reach Soul Wars1.
  2. On the first visit, use the Ava's device on both accounts on Nomad. The Soul Wars cape is forced on in the minigame, but this still allows the device to save ammo1.
  3. On both accounts set quick prayers to protect from melee, preserve and Rigor, turn on accept aid and turn on auto-retaliate1.
  4. Each account joins its own clan, then both enter the Eastern portal surrounded by lava. Right-click challenge on both accounts and accept to start the game11.
  5. Grab multiple potions from the lobby table on both accounts. They provide prayer and a near-overload stat boost, so prayer is not a worry. The locator orb is used to move the alt down as the game goes on11.

The method

The method is rigid and requires playing two accounts at once, which takes getting used to, but it is fairly lenient timing-wise11.

  1. Each account heads to opposite sides of the north or south soul obelisk and kills ghosts. The goal is 28 to 32 fragments combined, usually 8 to 12 on the main and 16 on the alt12.
  2. Once the main has roughly enough fragments, it runs to the centre obelisk while the alt is placed within range of the main's dark bow. The main must not walk past the ruins, since standing in that area caps the obelisk12.
  3. The alt is specced with the main's dark bow, a guaranteed minimum of 16 damage at ten tile range. When the alt dies, the main telegrabs the fragments it collected from across the river, waits near the obelisk for it to be capped (shown by the colour change and the bar filling at top left), then sacrifices the fragments13.
  4. After capping, the alt clicks its portal and gets ready to exit, while the main runs to the avatar and blowpipes it for a minimum damage contribution of roughly 300, a bit less depending on fragments deposited14.
  5. The clock must be watched carefully. As soon as it reaches 1210 the alt leaves and forfeits, which ends the match and awards 19 zeal if the criteria are met14.

Each game takes 2 minutes 50 seconds, and a fast player can start the next game within 10 seconds. At about 3 minutes and 19 zeal per game this comes to 380 zeal per hour5. Gnomonkey puts the method at 1.2m gp per hour6.

Soul Wars cape

The cape costs 2,500 zeal and gives +8 prayer bonus, by far the best in slot for prayer bonus4. Gnomonkey would not bother getting it: it is a 6.5 hour grind for +2 prayer bonus over the Ardougne cloak 4, and in most cases where a prayer bonus cape helps, a hitpoints cape helps more4.

Reward crates

Reward crates contain a wide variety of loot: raw fish, runes, bolts, arrows, coal, mithril, rubies, diamonds, soul runes, rune armour and rune ore, plus rare dragon gear and coins15. In 2024 the last crates of a long session gave bolts, around 30k gp, soul runes, rune arrows and adamant bolts, which he called a very solid first ten16.

Sub Wars (2024)

In 2024 Gnomonkey did a lot of Soul Wars to get the gp and supplies needed for the Fight Caves, since the group hardcore had no gp17. He planned only a brief warm-up, but gifted subs each added or removed crates from his total, turning it into a long session called Sub Wars18. The crate target rose through 20, 30, 50 and 100, with some gifts subtracting from the total, until about 30 crates remained near the end19.
