Grand Exchange is a mechanic topic that Gnomonkey covers in 3 videos between 2020-07-21 and 2025-05-29. This article is a stub: his statements are grouped by type, repeated ones merged.

Stats and numbers

  • Items under 50 gp are still not taxed and the Grand Exchange tax cap of 5 million per item remains in place for high-value trades, so it is not 10 million.1

Tips

  • Gnomonkey enables actively traded prices from OSBuddy in the RuneLite Grand Exchange plugin, so the Grand Exchange shows the buying price from OSBuddy, and also shows exact total value.2
  • A fuzzy fallback search option in the Grand Exchange plugin shows items even if you misspell the name by a character, which Gnomonkey says is super handy.2

Gnomonkey's opinion

  • Gnomonkey says that once Yama contracts are on the Grand Exchange and in players' banks, removing or radically changing the tradable system would require ripping out a huge chunk of content.3

Events

  • When asked what to buy or sell for the update, Gnomonkey hinted that a boss some people consider a chicken will be quite important, without elaborating.4
  • As of the late-May 2025 update, the Grand Exchange tax rate was increased from 1% to 2%, doubling it.1
  • Offers existing at the time of the update stay taxed at 1% or untaxed; only newly created offers after the update use the 2% rate.1
  • Low-value and early-game utility items such as low-tier food, energy potions, teleport tablets, early-game ammo and mind runes were made fully exempt from Grand Exchange tax.5

Trivia

  • Jagex's stated reason for the change is that GP entering the game has steadily increased while money sinks have not kept pace, so the tax increase is meant to curb inflation.6
  • Jagex explains that most Grand Exchange tax is deleted from the game to remove GP, while a small slice is used by the game to buy certain items from players and permanently delete them (the item sink system).7
