Chaos altar is an activity topic that Gnomonkey covers in 1 video on 2019-10-09. This article is a stub: his statements are grouped by type, repeated ones merged.

Methods

  • Many players, including Gnomonkey, teleport to the altar with a burning amulet and a full inventory of bones, use all the bones, then sacrifice themselves to respawn, run to a bank and start another run.1
  • After teleporting to the Lava Maze, Gnomonkey flicks on Protect from Magic, Piety and Protect Item, using all three because prayer points can be restored indefinitely at the altar; Augury would be better for the added magic defence.2

Stats and numbers

  • The Chaos Altar has a 50% chance of not consuming an offered bone and gives the same XP per bone as a gilded altar, but it is deep in the Wilderness so tactics are needed to lose as few bones as possible.3
  • An Elder Chaos druid outside the altar unnotes bones for 50 GP each, and this is what player killers look for: players with a large amount of bones risking a lot of money for slightly faster XP; the area is hunted about as often as the Revenant Caves.4
  • Gnomonkey had reached 92 Prayer with the method and lost around 100 to 150 bones in total, and says the most you can lose in one run is around 15 bones because bones go through the altar very quickly.5

Tips

  • Gnomonkey uses dragon bones in the footage; wyvern bones give the same XP, so players should check which is cheaper at the time.4
  • A decent collection of burning amulets is important to teleport to the Lava Maze and run to the temple.1
  • Gnomonkey uses a Dinh's bulwark, which was nerfed not long before to remove its magic defence bonus, but is still the best defensive piece that is protected on death; he says it is not necessary but handy.1
  • Depending on the method Gnomonkey also brings a crafting cape or ring of dueling to teleport next to a bank after dying, which speeds up trips a tiny amount.6
  • After reaching the temple, rapidly click the bones and then the altar, because the faster the bones are used the less likely the player is to get killed.2
  • Respawn points of PvP worlds have banks at them, making them the fastest way of banking after dying, but there are only two PvP worlds and two high-risk worlds, which are patrolled religiously; Gnomonkey recommends using that only during off hours.7
  • If attacked while using bones, keep offering bones as fast as possible and make sure auto-retaliate is turned off so the player does not try to fight the player killers.8
  • Protect Magic plus Augury and a Dinh's bulwark make it possible to get through an entire inventory of bones if one player killer attacks.8
  • Gnomonkey hopes the RuneLite swapper plugin stays, as the method will become much harder without it.5

Gnomonkey's opinion

  • Gnomonkey calls the Chaos Altar the best Prayer training method because it is the cheapest in GP and XP and gives the same XP an hour as a gilded altar.3

Events

  • In the footage two player killers log in; Gnomonkey notices they are not using magic, swaps to Protect from Missiles, then to Protect from Melee when one runs at him with a dragon dagger, and tanks both attacks with no food and only a bulwark while using half the inventory of bones.9
