Elf pickpocketing (elf thieving) is a Thieving method in Prifddinas. Gnomonkey calls it legitimately the most money you can make from a skilling method, over 3 million gp an hour at the then-current seed price, at an intensity low enough to watch Netflix or YouTube on another monitor1. It is also one of the fastest ways of getting crystal shards on an Iron Man1.

He is not sure he would recommend it below 99 Thieving, since it is slower without the cape, and suggests taking the higher XP rates at Ardougne Knights until 99, though starting early is acceptable for the money5.

Requirements

  • Completion of Song of the Elves, a built ornate rejuvenation pool (or a friend or alt with one), and at minimum 85 Thieving. He recommends 99 for the Thieving cape's extra 10% pickpocket success1.
  • The Ardougne hard diary: the method is not worth doing without it. It gives 10% more success everywhere and stacks with the thieving cape; the Ardougne cloak does not need to be equipped6.
  • The Rogue outfit, which doubles all of the elves' loot, including the enhanced crystal teleport seed7.

His rates assume 99 Thieving. With less than 99 you thieve about 24% slower, which brings gp an hour closer to 2.3 million8.

Equipment and inventory

Equipment is the rogue outfit, thieving cape and a dodgy necklace8. He also brings a butterfly net for crystal implings, which needs 80 Hunter to catch and 90 to catch barehanded8. The inventory is 19 dodgy necklaces, a chisel to cut diamonds into bolt tips (which profits more than alching them), and an impling jar if the player has 80-90 Hunter. The rune pouch is questionable because nature and death runes do not auto-add to it9.

Dodgy necklaces give a 25% chance, when failing a pickpocket, to avoid damage or stun, at the cost of one of 10 charges, and he says to always use them10. Crystal implings are worth an average of 72k with a 1 in 50 chance of an elite clue, and he saw about one an hour9.

Method

  1. Use the player-owned house in Prifddinas. Thieve the elves near the house portal and re-enter the portal to restore at the ornate pool when out of health. He sets quick prayers to rapid heal and redemption11.
  2. The elves' left-click option is Talk, which prevents left-click pickpocketing as with Ardougne Knights10.
  3. The elves occasionally drop wines, lengthening trips; on average there are about five minutes of pickpocketing before a restore is needed10.

Trapping the elves

  • Lindir is the elf closest to the house portal and never leaves his house, stuck on four tiles, so he never needs luring. With a friend you can trap him in the corner, use one-click mode and spam pickpocket without moving the mouse12.
  • Mithrandir wanders near the house west of the portal and can be soloed: open the door when she is in the corner to block her, then single-click pickpocket her. She is forced to move after five minutes, the same timer as the door shutting, so shut the door before 300 seconds, wait, and reopen it to reset her13. With four wines or fewer in a trip the player restores before she is forced to move, so no reset is needed14.
  • Kurdan, whom the wiki suggests pickpocketing near the bank, is difficult to trap because of his large wander distance. Gnomonkey says it would take at least two people and he could escape after 300 seconds14.

Loot

The elves drop coins, death runes, nature runes, jugs of wine, diamonds, fire orbs, gold ore, crystal shards and, extremely rarely, enhanced crystal teleport seeds15. He cuts diamonds into bolt tips, drops gold ores, and drops fire orbs (worth 1,400 gp each) early in the trip, filling up on orbs only as he runs out of necklaces16.

A seed can be broken down into 150 crystal shards, which is the amount needed to imbue the Blade of Saeldor17. He says the seed's price is held steady by both the Blade of Saeldor and the value of divine potions18.

Rates

A player can pickpocket about 450 times an hour; the wiki says 475, which he thinks would need several dodgy necklace procs16. At 450 an hour the method gives on average 3.2 million gp an hour, and about 600k an hour without a teleport seed2. On an Iron Man the elves give about 25 shards an hour plus about 66 on average from breaking down seeds, about 91 an hour, which he says is faster than Zalcano and the Gauntlet4. He hit 150k Thieving XP an hour very easily despite dying twice in the hour, and thinks 160k to 170k is possible3. The pet chance is about half that of the Ardougne Knights pet; he says it would take 215 hours post-99 but would provide roughly 650 million gp19.

Plugins and input

  • The external NPC Idle Timer puts a 300-second timer over an NPC's head that resets when it moves, letting the player move a trapped NPC before it escapes20.
  • He puts "your dodgy necklace has crumbled to dust" in the chat notification plugin, sets the menu swapper's home option to enter the house, and configures the implings plugin to notify when a crystal impling is nearby21.
  • Mouse keys lets the player click with numpad 5 so the mouse stays in place. Without a numpad, a key can be rebound to left click with software or AutoHotkey, which he says is allowed because it is one-to-one input22.
