The TzHaar Fight Cave is a 63-wave activity ending with TzTok-Jad, completed to obtain the fire cape. Gnomonkey describes it as far less complicated than its reputation for players with decent stats and a toxic blowpipe, and has covered a standard blowpipe guide, Slayer-task and pet value, speedruns, a mage-only challenge and a low-level melee run.

Requirements and preparation

  • There are no requirements, but Gnomonkey recommends completing Animal Magnetism (for the ava's accumulator) and Rum Deal (for the Holy wrench)1. The Holy wrench gives 1 to 2 extra prayer points per prayer dose while in the inventory, which typically saves more than a full prayer potion1.
  • The caves are doable with only 43 Prayer, though higher Prayer eases supplies; he recommends 60+ Defence, and says Rigor greatly speeds up the caves2.
  • He recommends getting a Slayer task before the first run (a viewer suggestion he repeats)3. An imbued black mask or Slayer helmet greatly raises DPS on a Fight Caves task, but failing or leaving early cancels the task4.
  • Route: fairy ring code BLP and run north, or the Karamja teleport on an amulet of glory then west to the volcano; a bank is next to the cave5.

Gear and inventory (2020 blowpipe guide)

  • His footage used max gear and Void. Downgrades he lists: boots to Blessed dragonhide or snakeskin, necklace of anguish to fury or glory, assembler to accumulator6. He calls the Armadyl armour deal very expensive for a small DPS boost, and suggests black dragonhide vambraces or a regen bracelet without Barrows gloves7.
  • On a new account with no Void and no task he would bring a fury, Blessed dragonhide boots (or glory and snakeskin boots) and black dragonhide vambraces8.
  • Inventory: no Saradomin brews, since they stop use of the three divine ranging potions; a wrench, 15 prayer potions and eight sharks8. With budget gear he suggests manta rays or dark crabs, and with Defence below 60 maybe 10 manta rays and two fewer prayer potions9.
  • Each divine ranging dose damages the player by 10 but keeps the boost for five minutes; the blowpipe special can restore the health10. He stays potted nearly the whole caves and saves at least one dose for Jad11. He flicks Eagle Eye or Rigor to raise DPS and save prayer10.
  • He uses blowpipe specials when health is below what they can restore (50% of the max hit, 28 at 75 Ranged with Eagle Eye and a boost potion), preferably on Rangers1112.

Enemies and waves

Each wave adds another of the weakest enemy, and two of the same enemy combine into the next tier in the following wave13.

Enemy Gnomonkey's notes
22 (bats) Harmless but sap a prayer point per attack; fairly high priority14
45 (Keks) Lowest priority; only hurt at low defence14
90 (Rangers) Max hit 13, fairly accurate, main source of damage; high priority15
180 (melee) Max hit 25, can heal others, can be safe-spotted; low priority15
360 (magers) Max hit 54 magic or melee; protect from magic when around; medium to high priority16
  • He stays in the south-western part under the peninsula, a safe spot, for about 99% of the caves16.
  • Waves 1-6 matter little; the first Ranger spawns at wave 7, after which he uses protect from missiles when safe until wave 1517. The first 180 appears at wave 15; he stands below the rock so it cannot attack, and 180s use fewer supplies than Rangers18. A 180 spawning adjacent is lured by tanking one hit with protect from melee and running back through19.
  • From wave 22 a Ranger and a 180 chase together; the Ranger takes priority if reachable first19. Wave 29 (two Rangers and a 180) is tough and wave 30 has two melee enemies, one usually lured20.
  • Wave 31 is the first 360; he keeps protect from magic on for the rest and does not flick magic, since one misflick can devastate supplies20. Protect from magic comes off only if a 360 is trapped in the north; from wave 38 each wave has a 360 and a Ranger, Ranger first21.
  • Wave 45 has two Rangers and a 360; 180s return from wave 46, which he says makes later waves easier22. A 360 spawning adjacent can be attacked after one step toward it, gaining a tile of range while still trapping the 18023.
  • From wave 53 to 61 Rangers, 180s and three 360s are on the board23. Wave 60 (two Rangers, a 180, a 360) is the most dangerous besides Jad; wave 61 has two 180s and a 36024. Wave 62 has two 360s, one bright orange marking Jad's spawn; boosts, health and prayer should be restored first25.

Rewards and Slayer task

  • Completion gives a fire cape and 8,032 tokkul, about 85k GP if saved for onyx26. He recommends destroying the first duplicate cape at TzHaar to access the Inferno, then sacrificing extra capes for pet rolls26.
  • The pet is 1 in 100 per task base, plus 1 in 200 from sacrificing a cape, about 1 in 67 per task2728. The 2020 guide gives 1 in 100 on task versus 1 in 200 off task29.
  • The task gives 50k Slayer XP an hour29. In a later video, finishing on task gives an extra 25k XP plus kill XP (37k total), and a 40-minute blowpipe run gives about 60k Slayer XP an hour3031. With a Twisted bow he considers it worth doing even with the pet, with times near 30 minutes32.
  • He got the Jad pet on his 30th Fight Caves and relocked the task31; in 2020 he had already disabled the task for the same reason29. Fight Caves tasks are great for a Jad pet30. If starting a new account he would do Slayer after getting the fire cape4.

Speedruns and opinions

  • In March 2022 he placed a standard run in B tier and Fight Caves speedrunning in S tier, calling speedruns skill-intensive: third age bow, long-range fast hits, a website of run routes, not dragging enemies, venging when healthy, and Guthix rest to avoid wasted ticks; Jad is double-venged to end on one health3334. He dislikes that speedruns require grinding Slayer tasks but is glad of an off-task category35.
  • He put the TzRek-Jad pet in low A tier, less cool than the Inferno pet36.
  • He likes the "Jad, no time for a drink" Combat Achievement (no prayer points lost): a bat touching the player fails it, and he calls it the hardest prayer task in the game, building prayer flicking and spawn handling like the Inferno373839.
  • He says the caves came out in October 2005 and were beaten on day one40. Spawns are much faster than the Inferno's41, and NPC click boxes are better than Inferno hitboxes42.

Challenge runs

Mage only (2024). For the Wiki Guides challenge series he did a mage-only run with the OSRS Wiki setup and the worst listed downgrades43. Infinity robes were worn throughout, fire runes were carried loose (262,000 at the start)44. He considers the wiki setup poor, since it relies on Infinity-tier gear and Barrage spells he cannot afford runes for44, and prefers thralls over Ice or Blood Barrage here45. His gear had melee strength 6 and prayer 1546. Rangers have magic level 60, and he says each tier roughly doubles the previous magic level; the melee monster has about 80 health and magic 1204748. The melee monster drains prayer and heals only while meleeing4950. Base staves cannot autocast Flames of Zamorak (max hit 20, no god cape needed)5152. Finished in 121:09, using about 17,000 fire runes5354. He says the wiki's better setup (Shadow and full Ancestral, Sang, Ward, Eternal boots, Magus ring) would be much better55, and no boots beats the wiki's boots downgrade56.

Low-level melee on group hardcore ironman (2024). On a Group Hardcore Ironman he planned Soul Wars money, Monkey Madness, combat levels, the defender grind, then a melee run57. Needs: supplies, Prayer training, weapon poison (the hard part), a dragon defender and food57. He started with 64 Hitpoints, noting only Jad can one-shot him, so he must not misplay prayer there5859. Manta rays heal 22, needing 42 Hitpoints for full efficiency at max 6460. Mage monsters max 52 with magic and 54 in melee61. Pulling monsters to safe spots such as the northeast corner lets him fight them one at a time62. The 250 Temple Spiders killed for poison were worth it63, though poison helps only minorly for the defender grind and caves64; Attack potions add about 0.1 DPS on Jad, not worth it65. His setup has roughly half the strength bonus of the wiki's lowest melee gear66. He estimated forty minutes to Jad with 21 or 22 mage monsters left at wave 63, and reached Jad about 1:54 into the video, waves starting at about 51 minutes6768. He believes it may be the first no-scythe melee Fight Caves69.
