Chompy bird hunting is the activity of inflating frogs with swamp gas and shooting the chompies they attract. All of the western diaries require some amount of chompies to be hunted, which in turn are required to unlock elite Void.1 After the elite diaries, players can keep hunting for further ogre hats or a chance at the Chompy chick pet at 1 in 500, which Gnomonkey says is the most common pet in the game.1 He describes his full-process times as about four hours of hunting to complete the chompy kill requirements up to the elite diary.5
Requirements and gear
- Bow: an ogre bow or ogre composite bow; the composite bow fires faster, has the same bonuses and slightly less range.1
- Arrows: brutal arrows. Gnomonkey uses adamant brutals for a more reasonable cost; rune brutals are best for a quick finish.2
- Quest: the composite ogre bow and brutal arrows require Zogre Flesh Eaters, so he recommends finishing it first.2
- Void: not worth using, because the ogre bows have a weird damage multiplier that does not stack with Void, so only the accuracy bonus applies, and even dragonhide gives better accuracy.2
Inventory
He brings 20 ogre bellows, acquired with a drop trick at Rantz's cave by searching the chest and dropping bellows until enough are on the ground; if not using potions he fills the inventory with bellows leaving three free spaces.6 He brings divine ranging potions to speed up hunting, since chompies are weak but not always one-hit because the bow and arrows are awful, and skips prayer potions because they take too many spaces.7 A basket of strawberries is his food, because brews cannot be used with divine potions and strawberries are the highest-healing single-space food besides sweets and brews.7
Method
The best place is the peninsula south-west of Castle Wars, which seems to have the most frog spawns; reach it with fairy ring code BKP or a ring of dueling to Castle Wars.3 Fill the bellows with swamp gas (AFK or by spam-using bellows on the bubbles), inflate frogs, and place them on the ground anywhere; each placed frog has a chance to spawn a chompy that can then be shot.8 The player can carry a maximum of three inflated frogs, so he keeps three spaces open; extra inflated frogs escape one at a time.8
Diaries speed this up: the easy western diaries raise the chance of a second chompy spawning by 25%, the mediums by 50%, and the elites guarantee a second bird.9 When completing diaries back to back he recommends getting the bare minimum kills for each easy and medium diary and leaving to complete those, since they dramatically speed up the process.9
Tips
- Chompies try to eat placed frogs if they have not yet been attacked, so he tags each chompy in a row and focuses on those closest to flying away to avoid depleting bait.10
- Standing between the chompies and the frogs helps, since approaching within one tile makes them screech and back off, giving time to shoot.10
- Plucking is not worth it for diaries because it gives only a few feathers, but it is worth it when pet hunting because each hunted and plucked chompy gives a second roll at the pet.11
Chompy Hunter plugin
He recommends the Chompy Hunter RuneLite plugin, which counts chompies hunted, highlights them and shows a timer; chompies fly away after sixty seconds.11 It outlines chompies that fly in and adds a 60-second timer over each, helping prioritise targets.12 It is an external plugin, installed from the plugin hub at the bottom of the plugins tab; he says RuneLite endorses these plugins as safe, though some external plugins stop working over time, while this one worked perfectly.13 He calls it a huge help if hunting chompies at any point, though not one used every day.12
Rates and pet
With the elite diary completed and plucking most chompies, Gnomonkey got about 285 kills an hour, a rate similar to having just the medium diary and only killing them.4 At that rate the pet should take an average of about an hour, but his own took three and a half hours.4 He received his Chompy chick from plucking a bird.11
