RuneLite is the third-party Old School RuneScape client that Gnomonkey uses for all play. Across 2018 to 2026 he promotes its plugins (GPU, ground items, inventory setups, tile indicators and boss-specific helpers), shows how he configures it, and states that he will never play the official client over it.

Gnomonkey's opinion

  • 2024: RuneLite is more widely used than the vanilla client, runs better and dramatically improves the experience; anyone doing PvM without it is "shooting themselves in the foot"1. Plugins bridge a quality-of-life gap Jagex cannot currently provide, and being able to use RuneLite was one of the main reasons he came over from RuneScape 31. He would not want to play without Menu Entry Swapper and Custom Menu Swaps2.
  • 2025: he says plugin support is extremely important to him and was one of the driving factors in leaving RuneScape 3 in 2017; his top plugin category is visual helpers, since Jagex is bad at visual cues, audio cues and clickboxes34. He prefers third-party plugins only, is unhappy with the state of the official client, and says he will never play the official client over RuneLite, calling it ten times worse than RuneLite even compared with RS3's client, lacking quest helpers, minigame helpers and tile indicators5. If Jagex removed RuneLite, as he says they have tried before, he does not know whether he would still play6.
  • He calls RuneLite key to the game's success and community-made, with built-in custom modes such as Prop Hunt and Bronzeman Mode; he wants Jagex to stay out of it, noting every minigame gets a plugin the day it releases and plugins fix things developers break, such as the Rune Pouch update78.
  • For official plugins he ranks menu entry swapper and quest helper most important, quest helper first even though it helps once per account9. The official mobile menu entry swapper cannot swap some bank entries and rune pouches are similarly annoying; minigame plugins matter, but he never wants to play minigames like Giants' Foundry, Mixology or the Fletching activity on mobile10.

Safety and the Plugin Hub

  • He warns that scams and phishing through the wrong RuneLite client are common; the real one is at RuneLite.net or linked from the official OSRS page, and the only third-party clients allowed by Jagex are RuneLite and HDOS1112.
  • The wrench button has three sections: default plugin settings, profiles (saving whole-client configurations) and the plugin hub. Plugins should only be taken from the hub inside RuneLite122.
  • In May 2020 he explains that external plugins are not in vanilla RuneLite, are confirmed safe by the RuneLite developers, and carry a use-at-your-own-risk warning because they may be unmaintained; all those in the video had worked well for over a year13. In July 2020 he considers none necessary except Inventory Setups, which he cannot understand missing from default RuneLite14.
  • He cannot export his RuneLite settings; some of his tile markers are on a pastebin and others, such as radius markers, must be found via commands in his Twitch chat1.
  • He recommends logging in with a Google account before setup so runelite.net stores loot and Grand Exchange history15.

Setup (2020)

In July 2020 he deleted his settings file to demonstrate configuring RuneLite from scratch16. Settings he describes: - Stretched mode on, scaling at 100% for a crisper UI; resolution matched to the screen (he plays on 1440p)171819. - Not always on top, tray and game message notifications on, notifications always sent and focus requests off, with a custom notification sound202122. - Small tooltip font, regular interface font, shift required for the overlay menu, tooltips under the cursor22. Overlay color on stops mouse macro keys counting as clicks23. - Metronome pinned to the top for counting ticks24. Holding Alt moves overlays; moving the enemy health bars to the top is one of the most useful changes25. - He closes the video saying these are all his plugins and the setup should mostly be accurate26.

Official plugins

  • GPU: in 2018 he calls it an absolute godsend even with bugs, since the graphics card drives the game; its extended click radius allows clicks up to 45 tiles away versus about 20, and he told viewers to abuse it while they could because he expected Jagex to have it removed2728. In 2019 he adds that it gives better render distance, anti-aliasing and a skybox, and with animation smoothing makes the game look closer to RuneScape 2; Zoom Unlimiter plus GPU render distance brings great utility2930.
  • Ground Items: his favourite plugin, nearly necessary, showing drop names and values with customizable colours; he wanted it on mobile and the desktop client3129.
  • Clue Scroll Solver: controversial because it solves steps when opened, which he says is not much different from googling; it handles every clue type32.
  • Tile Indicators: highlight current true tile shows the server tile, and hovered tile shows where a click will go33.
  • Timers, Nightmare Zone and notifications: he enables game notifications for events such as a power surge or low prayer34; in the NMZ plugin only power surge power-ups are checked, with notifications for overload ending and absorption below 5034. A 50-second interval timer lets the player flick rapid heal to keep health at 135. A boost timer for stamina potions is useful in the Timers plugin36.
  • Agility: the Sepulchre trap hitbox highlighting was moved into it and is on by default37.

External plugins (2020)

  • Inventory Setups is his stated necessity: a bank-tag-like plugin without clutter, highlighting missing items in red, extremely helpful for Slayer (his example setup is for the Alchemical Hydra)38.
  • Quality of life: Spec Regen Timer, which he thinks belongs in the main build39; Banked Experience40; Skills Progress Bars, with the size reduced from three pixels to one41; Herb Sack Price Calculator, also deserving main-build status42; Essence Pouch, which he says should be in the Runecraft plugin43; Custom Left Click Drop44; Menu Swapper Extended45; Tray Notifications46; NPC Idle Timer, a 300-second timer useful for thieving47; NMZ Utilities48.
  • Money and information: Flipping Utilities, which he calls incredibly useful for merchants49; Bank Value50; Probability Calculator51; Calculator52; Equipment Inspector for the Wilderness53; the Wiki Crowdsource plugin, then only tracking cooking burn rates54.
  • Positioning and bossing: Player Tile, helpful for Vorkath, Woox walking and most of the Theatre of Blood55; Zulrah Helper, a manual rotation side panel56; Ground Markers With Labels, useful at the Inferno and Theatre of Blood57.
  • Privacy and content creation: World Hider58; RSN Hider, because social engineers can find password hints in post history59; Green Screen and Detached Camera60.
  • He names Inventory Scrabble his personal favourite external plugin61.

Plugins by content

  • Vorkath (2019): tile indicators for acid tiles (Shift and right-click) and hybrid tiles, destination colour 3A3632, boost timers on and moved near the inventory, the zombified spawn in NPC indicators, ruby bolts highlighted green, a bank tag tab and a default lowest-ping world; he notes potion timers can be off by 20 seconds, and sets Protect from Missiles and Rigor as quick prayers6263646566.
  • ZMI Runecrafting (2020): a bank tag tab with essence and stamina potions, inventory tags in red for droppable runes, and the Essence Pouch plugin, which was not working for him6768.
  • Hallowed Sepulchre (2020): he cannot imagine doing it on mobile; GPU render distance is incredibly important (kept at 90), animation smoothing lets him count fire ticks, ground markers are practically necessary, and the Widget Hider hides the UI on a keybind69373370.
  • Theatre of Blood (2021): turn off auto retaliate, bind F keys with key remapping, tag moving bosses in NPC Indicators, enable the true tile, use the RuneWatch and We Do Raids ban list plugins, and set anti drag to 10717273.
  • Corrupted Gauntlet (2026): the Gauntlet plugin (required resources set to seven ore, seven bark, seven linum and 450 crystal shards in the video), tile indicators with true tile on the tornadoes and NPC indicators for Hunllef, an attack timer metronome, a CG recolor plugin that makes the grind more tolerable, and a CG performance tracker showing prayer mistakes, wrong-style attacks and lost ticks747576777879. His demonstration run showed 124 lost ticks, four hits from wrong prayer and seven wrong-style attacks; the tier-one run lost about 12 ticks. He aims for a 95% "use ticks" figure and notes wrong-style hits are not counted in lost ticks808182. The speed CA guide repeats the same plugin list and advises recording and reviewing runs8384.

Jagex membership survey (January 2025)

  • The survey's cheaper-membership limitations included not being able to use plugins or third-party clients, which would mean paying for the premium tier to use RuneLite; he says the plugins Jagex would restrict are basically required to play8586. Gating an API behind payment would block plugins pulling highscore data unless players pay87.
  • The CEO apology said Jagex will not make plugins or features on the official client paid options, nor gate features including for community clients such as RuneLite and HDOS88. See Opinion: Jagex CEO survey apology.
