Methods

  • The wiki's Giant Mole downgrade page offers ranged (ACB or a bow with void), magic (lowest downgrade is a Sanguinesti staff), melee Dharok-style gear, and a melee budget setup; Gnomonkey picked the melee budget setup, with a dragon dagger as the special attack weapon.1
  • Gnomonkey does not use the Falador shield in the wiki budget gear challenge, assuming anyone with that budget has not completed the Falador hard diary.2
  • For the Iron Man simulation, Gnomonkey brewed down to roughly 60-65 stats, used no stamina potions and counted two strange fruit random events, to represent a low-level Iron Man doing the wiki setup.3
  • He is doing a Giant Mole rush ASAP on the hardcore account.4

Stats and numbers

  • Giant Mole's slash defence is 80 and its other defence 200 in the clip where he checks it.5
  • In the brewed-down run Gnomonkey estimates the kill is slower than a Vorkath kill and says Giant Mole at those stats is probably about 30m gp/hr, as he guesses.6

Tips

  • A thrall makes Giant Mole dig, but Gnomonkey finds the thrall useful as a locator to tell where the mole is.5
  • Giant Mole does not dig any more once it is below 5% health, so the rest of the fight is free.7
  • A trick with the budget bone dagger setup: if Giant Mole is never brought below 50% health it never digs, so until then you are fine.8
  • Gnomonkey advises a low-level Iron Man at about 60 base stats needing the Falador hard diary kill to get help from a friend with a shield, or to make two ultracompost bottles and dig them in the corners of the room, which he says takes less time than doing the wiki setup.9
  • If he gets mole slippers he will pass them around in the group storage so every group member has a chance of wearing them.10

Gnomonkey's opinion

  • Gnomonkey calls Giant Mole the best mid-level boss in the game, with 200 health and a random chance for each hitsplat once below 100 health to make it dig around the room.11
  • Gnomonkey says Giant Mole encourages slow heavy-hitting weapons like a Dharok's set or Twisted bow and discourages claw or dragon dagger specs, which he says no other boss in the game does.12
  • Gnomonkey says fighting Giant Mole taught him corner safe spots for the Inferno, because mole digging works like an Inferno melee.13
  • Gnomonkey rates Giant Mole in highest C tier, saying it has more going on than people give it credit for but is not exceptional.14
  • Gnomonkey thinks the bone dagger special (40% spec, 25% increased accuracy and damage) is probably better than a dragon dagger special at Giant Mole because it is stab, mole is weak to stab, and it does not hit twice so it does not trigger a dig.15
  • Gnomonkey says 15 minute Giant Mole kills are not worth it and should not be suggested by any guide, and calls the low-level kill miserable and absurd.9

Records

  • With max combat stats and the wiki budget gear, Gnomonkey's first Giant Mole kill was about three minutes and a later kill took about a minute.7
  • The brewed-down wiki-gear Giant Mole kill took about 1,000 ticks, roughly 10 minutes, and ended with Gnomonkey one damage short of 5% before finally landing the kill.6
  • The Gearscape-suggested budget setup, brewed down, killed Giant Mole in about eleven minutes and cost roughly 1.3 million gp to assemble, with Gnomonkey saying the first half of the kill went well.17
