Requirements

  • The only requirement is 77 Slayer; Gnomonkey recommends at least 75 Ranged for a blowpipe and 74 Prayer for Rigor, and says they can technically be killed with as little as a ringed crossbow but much more slowly.1

Methods

  • At the dragons, drink the extended antifire and divine ranging potion, put on Protect from Magic and the best boost prayer (Gnomonkey uses Rigor) and begin.2

Stats and numbers

  • Brutal black dragons also provide about 80k Ranged XP an hour and 20k Slayer XP an hour.1
  • It takes about 60 seconds to kill a dragon and the player can AFK that whole time; trips give roughly 5 to 7 kills before the inventory is full.2
  • Using the dragon hunter crossbow, a task of 53 dragons took just under an hour and gave 1.4 mil GP, an ancient shard and a lucky elite clue (a 1 in 250 drop), with 10-15 world hops; more is expected if the worlds are empty.3

Tips

  • Gnomonkey highly recommends extending black dragons, as the assignment goes from 10-20 to 50-60; Duradel assigns them with a weight of 9, so they come up often.4
  • The armor stays basically the same: a Slayer helmet or black mask on task; off task Armadyl should give better DPS than void but void is a very good choice.4
  • Gnomonkey wears blessed dragonhide as he could not afford Armadyl, with Barrows gloves, an imbued archers ring, Ava's assembler or accumulator, and an anguish or fury.5
  • The best off-hand with the crossbow is a twisted buckler (+18 ranged attack), as the player has to pray magic regardless of dragonfire protection; secondary options are an odium ward (+12) or Book of Law (+10); Gnomonkey uses a dragonfire ward, which is only 3 less ranged attack bonus, because he lacked 5 mil for a buckler.6
  • Brutal black dragons drop soul bearer heads rarely, so bringing the soul bearer on average wastes an inventory space.7
  • Inventory: a Xeric's talisman to get there, two prayer potions, one dose of divine ranging potion (a second may be needed with a blowpipe on a lucky seven-kill trip), one dose of extended antifire, and no food since the dragons do no damage with Protect from Magic and antifire.7
  • Gnomonkey uses a desert amulet 4 to restock; it was buffed the day after recording so it now teleports right next to the altar. Without it, use a rune pouch for home teleport runes with a pool in the house, or rings of dueling to Clan Wars.7
  • Brutal black dragons can only be killed in the Catacombs of Kourend; the first time the player must run through the catacombs and climb up the vine to unlock the shortcut, and afterwards a Xeric's talisman teleports to Xeric's Inferno and the player runs to the shortcut.8
  • The player should avoid sitting in melee range, as brutal black dragons can hit very hard with melee.2

Gnomonkey's opinion

  • Gnomonkey calls brutal black dragons very AFK and one of the best Slayer tasks for profit, around 1.5 mil GP an hour, and says the worlds for them are constantly packed.1
  • The most affordable and accessible option is a blowpipe with adamant darts; Gnomonkey says rune darts and dragon darts lose more profit an hour than they gain.5
  • The next best option is a dragon hunter crossbow with diamond dragon bolts for profit and kills an hour, according to Onus's collected data; Gnomonkey says Onus's calculation for ruby bolts is incorrect because the max damage of a ruby bolt spec is quite low.9
  • Gnomonkey says the best weapon is a twisted bow with amethyst arrows, which are cheap and provide better DPS than rune; the twisted bow uses much cheaper ammunition than the crossbow and gives about 1.65 mil an hour.10
