Methods

  • Gnomonkey's improved mage setup for Yama used the void mage set, a purging staff because it is cheap, a mage book and Seers ring, with the Amulet of the damned.1

Stats and numbers

  • Because magic can splash, it is much less accurate than other styles against any monster with even a semblance of magic defence; a monster's magic defence is calculated from both its magic defence and its magic level.2
  • Against monsters with no magic defence, magic accuracy only slightly affects damage output, which is why some people mage wearing full melee armour.3
  • The only things that affect max hit are the spell used and the gear's magic damage bonus, except for staves with built-in spells such as the trident, which also scale with magic level.3

Tips

  • The guide assumes you already have a few million gp lying around, and Gnomonkey says realistically you should not be using magic at very early levels.4
  • People mage at places like Barrows, Dust Devils and Nechryael because those monsters have no magic defence and only level one magic.2
  • The slayer gearing section applies to situations where a monster has extremely low magic level and defence, which can also apply outside Slayer, such as Dagannoth Rex or Scorpia.5
  • The regular gear section applies to bosses where you are forced (or practically forced because of high defence against other styles) to mage, such as Zulrah or the Olm; for other cases check the monster's stats on the wiki.6
  • For staves whose spell scales with magic level, it may be worth boosting levels over buying a piece of gear, and that you should check the wiki to see if you are close to gaining a max hit.7
  • In the mage run Gnomonkey reached a max hit of 60 on Yama, which he liked far better than the roughly 30 he got with the wiki mage setup.8

Gnomonkey's opinion

  • Gnomonkey says making every piece of gold go as far as possible helps account efficiency tremendously, and this guide focuses on getting the most DPS from magic equipment, though defence or accuracy matter more in cases like bossing.9
  • Gnomonkey would always recommend investing in ranged or melee before magic, as you very rarely use magic for bossing, and notes none of the upgrades exist in a vacuum.4
  • Gnomonkey says magic accuracy is almost always much less important than magic damage bonus, which is the main stat the guide focuses on.5
  • Gnomonkey says the mage setup is easier to use than the melee setup, and slower, but not horrible; he found it easier to use during enrage.10
