Requirements

  • Woodcutting axes unlock in order: iron at level 1, steel at 6, black at 11, then the next axe every ten levels, up to the dragon axe at level 61.1
  • Woodcutting is probably the most important non-combat stat for CM: at Ice Demon it determines kindling per chop, up to 8, and it also affects the Muttadile tree.2
  • 92 Woodcutting is important for Sailing because it is needed for the new rosewood logs.3
  • 92 Woodcutting, a bit higher than redwoods, gets rosewood logs; each new log type makes its own planks used to upgrade ships.4

Methods

  • Completing Monk's Friend, Enlightened Journey, Ichthlarin's Little Helper and the Scratch Oogwee subquest of Recipe for Disaster gives 9,000 Woodcutting XP, taking you from level 1 to level 26.5
  • From level 1 to 15 chop regular trees, upgrading to a steel axe at 6 and a black axe at 11; it takes only 97 logs to reach 15, and the Grand Exchange is a convenient spot.6
  • From level 15 to 30 chop oak trees, for example right outside Castle Wars via a ring of dueling teleport, upgrading to a mithril axe at level 21; it takes 293 oak logs to get from 15 to 30.7
  • From level 30 to 35 chop willow trees, best by Hosidius Lake or alternatively Draynor; upgrade to an adamant axe at level 31, and it takes 134 logs to reach 35.8
  • From level 90 to 99 chop redwood trees; it would take 20,232 redwood logs to go from 90 to 99.9
  • For Woodcutting, Gnomonkey would do two-tick teaks until he had the level for Sulliuscep, and do those up until level 90 for redwoods.10

Stats and numbers

  • Having the Lumberjack outfit saves over 300,000 XP on the way to level 99 Woodcutting.11
  • Gnomonkey gives the Ice Demon kindling breakpoints as 96 Woodcutting for 8 kindling per chop, 84 for 7, and roughly 72 for 6; 96 is the last breakpoint.12
  • Jatoba logs come from trees comparable to a lower XP maple tree, and the logs are used for Sailing.13
  • Camphor trees are a hardwood above mahogany used in shipbuilding and give slightly more XP per hour than mahogany but fewer logs per hour; Gnomonkey likes this trade-off since lower resources usually mean lower XP.14
  • Ironwood trees give slightly more XP per hour than camphor but fewer logs per hour, and rosewood (reserved for master sailors) gives slightly more XP per hour than ironwood; the hardwood tree patch variants respawn slower.15

Tips

  • You should buy each next axe as soon as you unlock it, since each axe is tremendously faster than the last.1
  • To upgrade to a rune axe at level 41 and a dragon axe at level 61.16
  • Gnomonkey would grab the Lumberjack outfit as soon as he had Morytania legs 3, and would spend the fossil XP from sulliusceps on Mining.17
  • You do not need any of the new log levels to do Sailing, but to train efficiently he suggests pushing to 80 Woodcutting for ironwood logs before release.4
  • Gnomonkey expects Mining and Woodcutting to be very useful on launch because players rushing Sailing will not chop trees, creating huge demand for logs and planks.18

Gnomonkey's opinion

  • Gnomonkey recommends getting the Lumberjack outfit well before 80 Woodcutting so more of the XP savings are used.19
  • Gnomonkey describes Woodcutting as a slow but profitable skill that becomes extremely AFK from level 90 on redwoods.1
  • Gnomonkey says mahogany trees are about 40% worse than teaks, so he does not think the new trees will change much and expects teaks to stay the best option, but welcomes new AFK woodcutting options beyond Forestry and teaks.14

Events

  • The Sailing blog adds new logs for Woodcutting and Firemaking and a new hardwood patch on one of the islands, with four new trees: Jatoba, camphor, ironwood and rosewood.13
