Hunter is trained by trapping creatures. Gnomonkey describes it as a very profitable skill that is typically relatively intensive through most methods1, and as a very janky skill to train, especially in the early levels, which people try to skip with birdhouses4.
Requirements and basics
Many important high-level quests require Hunter: Monkey Madness II at 60 and Song of the Elves at 701. A handful of quests give Hunter XP, but all of them require Hunter levels5. The number of traps increases every twenty levels, up to five at level 80, and the skill starts with slow, terrible methods but speeds up dramatically once five traps can be laid11.
Little equipment improves training other than the traps themselves; he recommends buying a decent pile of ropes, small nets and box traps2. The Graceful outfit is most useful because of all the running2. As of 2021 he says it is a misconception that camo outfits such as the larupia outfit help; they are purely cosmetic2.
Training methods
- Herbiboar. His preferred route to 99 is herbivore, unlocked at level 803. It gives decent money and better XP at relatively low intensity, and with no pet drop from monkey trapping he typically prefers it to monkey trapping6. In 2022 he would move to herbiboar at 80 immediately, as it generates maximum profit since he would have bought Herblore anyway, switching to black chinchompas to try for the pet before 99 if spooked7.
- Black chinchompas. There are many alternatives, since they are definitely intensive considering their location3.
- Birdhouses and Drift net fishing. Drift net fishing gives 120k Hunter XP per hour, competing fairly well with dedicated intensive methods, but has no pet chance87. To gain more Hunter XP alongside it, he buys supplies for birdhouses so a run can be done when ready, wearing a digsite pendant for Fossil Island910. In 2022 he would do a mix of birdhouses and drift nets up to level 807.
Updates
Enhanced traps (January 2025)
Ent branches from the new Fletching activity can make enhanced bird snares, net trap kits and box traps with a 50% chance to reset themselves on failure, which he calls a huge buff to Hunter11. He says Hunter lacks a relaxed training option, usually being trained actively or with birdhouse runs, so he is fine with AFK enhanced traps12. Self-resetting box traps for chinchompas could be crazy, as chinchompas are already really good XP12.
Crab hunting and Sailing (2025)
The new crab hunting method sets a trap and the crab enters after an exact amount of time rather than a random chance; higher-level crabs seem slower, and the crab meat is used for potions13. Traps are faster set manually than automatically, with the automatic option slow but consistent14. Gnomonkey says it is a set cycle (for example resetting every 25 ticks, then looking away for 10 to 15 seconds), closest to herbiboar, which he really likes, and hopes it does not have terrible XP15. Crabs are ground into crab meat for potions in the Sailing prep, and armadillo brew requires 77 Hunter to catch its crab1616.
Anti-odour salt is a stackable salt automatically consumed to smoke a trap and raise catch rates for things like chinchompas; he says smoking traps was an old, buggy system nobody used17. He thinks the super hunter potion (boosting Hunter by six) could allow early boosting to high-level hunter contracts such as herbiboar or black chinchompas, since there is currently no good consistent high-level boost18.
New bait activity (January 2026)
A new activity needs 76 Hunter to collect bait and 82 to lure and catch the creatures (heard as stim pikes); it gives pure XP and no rewards19. He expects it to be more relaxed than tick-manipulated chinchompas, with active bait collecting and chill catching, and calls it not a bad idea20. Time to kill the new blood shard Slayer creatures off-task is earned by doing it, like Warriors' Guild tokens21.
Summer Sweep-Up (June 2026)
He says the improvements were very much needed4, and thinks the deadfall and rumor changes make early Hunter rumors much better and that grinding them may become more viable22.
| Area | Change |
|---|---|
| Falconry | The player is no longer held in place while the falcon chases a kebbit and can move4. Travel time is based on distance, so moving closer to the next kebbit speeds it up23. The falcon can catch a kebbit with a full inventory23 |
| Aerial fishing | Quick-catch area increased from 3x3 to 4x423. A toggle at Alry the Angler lets the cormorant eat inventory fish when there is no bait24. A larger pool spawns that the cormorant can be sent to several times in a row, adding downtime24. Pearl chance up 50%; fishing sack down to 500 pearls and Angler's outfit to 5025. He wonders if it now rivals Fishing Trawler for the outfit, perhaps at similar speed with better XP25 |
| Deadfall traps | Trap limit from one to two, roughly doubling speed for pyrefoxes (not maniacal monkeys)26. A chance to preserve the log, and traps catch after eight ticks instead of 1526. Wild kebbit catch rate up two and a half times, since they were an outlier that reduced deadfall utility at early levels27 |
| XP | Wild, barbed, prickly and sabertooth kebbit and pyrefox XP lowered by 20%, but the other changes still give about 60% more XP per hour27 |
| Bird snaring | Two traps from level 1 instead of level 20, which he says doubles early XP rates22 |
| Other | Ring of Pursuit reveals full tracks even after one has started22. Butterfly and moth rumor drop rate improved from 1 in 75 to 1 in 40 and pity from 150 to 8028. Chompy bird hunting grants some Hunter XP29 |
In Deadman
At one point he pivoted to Hunter in Deadman to get moths because the team was out of prayer, then mixed hide for ranged gear, sunlight antelope crossbows and chinchompas for ranged levels30. The 99 Hunter cape teleport to the Hunter Guild was a very safe bank teleport, as he never saw anyone there, and the daily teleports to black chinchompas helped reach revenants31.
