Cooking is an AFK and profitable skill, and Gnomonkey calls it an incredibly good 99 to do early on a main account, with about 10 million gp profit going to 992. Actively training by one-ticking karambwans can pull upwards of 800k XP an hour while profitable, and 99 can be finished in one day with an all-nighter2. This article reflects his 2020 guide, so the profit figures are as of that year.

Gear and locations

  • Cooking gauntlets (after Family Crest) are the only real gear to get before heavily training Cooking, and only for AFK training since they do not help with karambwans3. A tweet by Mod Ash says they only work on lobsters, swordfish, monkfish, sharks and anglerfish3.
  • Cooking cape: it makes it impossible to burn any food entirely4.
  • Fire cape and Hosidius favour: he recommends both before grinding, as they unlock useful cooking locations. The Hosidius range reduces burn rates by 5%, or 10% with the elite Kourend diary4. A range has marginally lower burn rates than a fire for all foods5.
  • Elite diaries: he does not recommend waiting for the current elite diaries (79 Cooking if boosting, 90 Slayer, 85 Woodcutting), because the extra 5% burn reduction is very small. He recommends stopping at 50 Cooking to unlock the Hosidius range6.

Where to cook

  • Hosidius range: six tiles from a bank, so worth using only if food can burn. He calls it the best range for karambwans until 997.
  • Mor Ul Rek: many assume the Myths' Guild is best, but the sulphur vent in Mor Ul Rek counts as a range, is equally close to a bank and is much easier to access, needing only a fire cape shown once to the guard5.
  • Without a fire cape: the next best is the Cooking Guild with the Varrock hard diary, two tiles from a bank. Otherwise the Rogues' Den fire is zero tiles from a bank but has higher burn rates7.

Training

Going from 1 to 35 costs about 15k gp8. Cook's Assistant gives level 4 and Gertrude's Cat gives level 12, both without requirements8.

About 200 shrimp are needed for 1-15 because a little under half burn8. Get cooking gauntlets at lobster; at the Hosidius range with gauntlets lobsters stop burning at 61, monkfish at 82 and sharks at 891115. As of the video, monkfish gave 97 gp profit each or 0.65 gp in XP, and at a 25% burn rate they roughly break even, while swordfish lose money regardless16. Sharks gave 128 gp profit each or 0.61 gp in XP13. He disagrees with the wiki's suggestion of starting anglerfish at 84 and suggests going back to Mor Ul Rek for the last level17. Dark crabs and manta rays were not worth cooking: dark crabs have much less profit, and manta rays give only slightly more than anglerfish but burn more, and gauntlets do not help so they burn up to 99 even at Hosidius18.

Karambwans

Gnomonkey says karambwans are the best option for getting 99 as fast as possible, from level 30 and beyond19. They can be cooked from level 30 with the Tai Bwo Wannai Trio quest, with a 51% success rate at 30 rising linearly to 100% at 9919. They stop burning at the Hosidius range at level 93, and from 93 give up to 950k XP an hour. Even at 30 at a regular range they give up to 475k XP an hour1. Reaching 99 from 93 would need 30,731 karambwans20.

To one-tick them, after cooking one successfully hold space and click the cooking spot with proper timing19. To avoid losing money to burning, he recommends waiting until 52 to cook them at the Hosidius range, or 57 at any other range, the break-even levels21.

Wines

Wines from level 35 are only worth doing on an Iron Man account, as the method is more intensive than others and costs about 0.7 gp per XP. A wine chain gives no XP drop until it stops, allowing massive XP drops22.
