Leagues V: Raging Echoes (Leagues 5) is a temporary ironman-locked game mode in which players are restricted to certain areas and unlock more by completing tasks.1 It has massively buffed XP rates, relics that give large buffs to skills, utility and combat, and a unique Echo boss fight in each region with very powerful item drops.1
Gnomonkey considers it one of the most well-rounded Leagues to date, with something for skillers chasing the Dragon cup, players wanting a challenge, and those wanting to try late-game content.7 After playing it he said he thinks it was the best Leagues yet, and that Jagex should continue to refine and do more PvM-related Leagues events.6 His pre-launch guide gives his perspective on having fun rather than a min-maxing spreadsheet; choosing a non-meta pick to have more fun elsewhere is never a bad idea.1
Regions and drops
Every player starts with Misthalin and Karamja unlocked, and neither has an Echo boss. Completing tasks then allows a first, second and third region, and the order matters because a first region without early-game boosts can make the start much harder.2
- Each raid can drop a mega rare note instead of the usual Scythe, Twisted bow or Shadow, so every raid has access to every mega rare item and no player is locked to one raid for a build.8
- Raid purples drop for every person in the team if anyone rolls one, so group raids farm purples extremely quickly.8
- Partial drops that normally need combining, such as the Ultor ring, Rancor and Avernic components, drop as the completed item. For example, choosing Morytania means Asgarnia is not needed to finish an Avernic defender.8
- All Echo items and relics are in the Gearscape DPS calculator, which can also generate setups using only items in the bank or only items available in the region.9
Combat masteries
Melee
Gnomonkey considers melee a very solid choice, but ranged far stronger.3
| Tier | Effect | Gnomonkey's comment |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 25% chance to roll damage twice and take the higher roll | Quite a big average DPS increase10 |
| 2 | 10% chance of an echo hit dealing 50% of the initial hit | Less DPS than tier 1 but can generate massive hits10 |
| 3 | 80% attack speed, rounded down | Strengthens early four-tick weapons such as the Rune scimitar11 |
| 4 | 5% chance to heal 40% of damage dealt | About one-third of a permanently attached Blood fury, with larger, rarer heals11 |
| 5 | 50% attack speed, rounded down | Two-tick Scythe, three-tick Dharok's set12 |
| 6 | Echo hits at 20% chance, chaining up to eight times (1 in 80,000 for a full chain) | Small DPS increase but allows crazy RNG boss kill times3 |
Ranged
He considers ranged stupidly busted this Leagues because of the combat masteries.4
| Tier | Effect | Gnomonkey's comment |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Minimum damage roll of 30% of max hit | Incredibly good with fast weapons13 |
| 2 | Each subsequent ranged hit has 5% higher max hit, stacking to 20% then resetting | 13 |
| 3 | Faster attack speed, two-tick weapons become one tick | A one-tick Toxic blowpipe within seconds of starting13 |
| 4 | Heals 5 hit points on every fifth ranged hit | Reliable HP usable for tick eating if you hit4 |
| 5 | Same attack speed boost as melee | Two-tick Twisted bow and Zaryte crossbow4 |
| 6 | Ranged attacks no longer miss | Ignores defence such as Bloat's 800 ranged defence and Sol Heredit's 8254 |
Ranged heals about five times more than melee when shooting, and he speculates the designers knew Blood fury existed and decided ranged did not need more.14 Onyx bolt (e) procs boost damage and also heal, which is better than the pure healing he first assumed.15 With the tier six ranged relic and a ranged weapon equipped, all spells are 100% accurate, including Ice Barrage.16
Magic
Magic is the weakest build, so weak compared to last Leagues' magic that he suspects Jagex saw its high pick rate and wanted to squash it.5 He also finds it strange that magic was shafted while ranged dominates, and says more thought on the combat relics would have helped.17
| Tier | Effect | Gnomonkey's comment |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Hits rolling above 90% of max hit hit 50% harder | Rarely procs5 |
| 2 | Max hit up 5% per tick between attacks | Super bad5 |
| 3 | Faster attack speed | 18 |
| 4 | Heals 10% of damage dealt when rolling over 90% of max hit | Heals far more than other styles; ideally stacks with Blood barrage18 |
| 5 | Two-tick Shadow and Barrage | 18 |
| 6 | Max hit up 1% per 100 hit points remaining on the target, up to 10%; max if target is below weapon max hit | 18 |
With the Devil's element, a 100 max hit Fire Surge can be cast at an Ice demon.19
Relic picks
Gnomonkey's pre-launch picks and opinions by tier:
- Tier 1: the harpoon relic (buffing Fishing and Hunter) is absurdly better than the mining and woodcutting options, with faster chinchompas and traps that never fail, especially good with the Hunter Guild in Varlamore. The woodcutting relic's extra Firemaking effect of never failing to light a log is bafflingly bad, while AFK fishing from the fishing relic is a great food source.2020
- Tier 2: he picks Forager because buffing Herblore is solid for ironman modes: it saves secondaries 90% of the time and makes four-dose potions, so no herb run is needed. Agility is nice for passive training but not needed since he has Sepulchre; Dodgy Deals for thieving GP and blood shards is a clear second choice, with Tirannwn-style AFK thieving of Tizar-type guards possible with ice gloves.2122
- Tier 3: Clue Compass is the clear best, because its clue-location teleports cover the bank and fairy ring options of the other relics, for example teleporting to a clue stash to bank.23
- Tier 4: he picks Reloaded to take Dodgy Deals, with thieving options in his region of Vyres for blood shards, Wealthy citizens for GP, and Tizar with ice gloves from Asgarnia for AFK training. Golden God for Prayer only seems exceptional with a house altar or the Wilderness, and Equilibrium (buffed to 20% when the trained skill is your lowest) is weak and boring.2424
- Tier 5: he picks Slayer Master because being on task all the time, including boss tasks and all of God Wars Dungeon, is a clear choice for PvM. Production Master is insanely strong for money from gem stalls and Treasure Arbiter is popular for clues.25
- Tier 6: Recall remembers stats before locking in, useful for abusing specs on bosses and recalling for free spec energy or teleporting to Barrows; Banker's Note suits skillers. He took the note last Leagues and prefers something different.26
- Tier 7 (new this Leagues): he picks Grimoire because using all offensive prayers and swapping spellbooks gives huge DPS and utility. Pocket Kingdom suits bulk resource collection and Overgrown suits players with very limited time.27
- Tier 8: disappointing overall. Last Stand's ridiculous 3 minute cooldown makes it a non-pick, and the Guardian Horn is just a super thrall for a minor DPS gain, worse than last Leagues because its two-tick resummon tech was patched out. The special attack relic is by far the best choice, and it changed his region pick from the Elf lands to Asgarnia, since his only spec options would otherwise be Burning claws and Bone dagger.2829
He also noted that the Echo bosses were downplayed on stream.17
Gnomonkey's playthrough
His first stream covered roughly 16 hours at the start of the League, with plans to stream for a while and make a second ranged account.30 He did the Fight Caves for another combat mastery as an alternative to repeatedly attempting the Colosseum, and was having a blast.3132 In the first weekend he was doing funny melee builds, planning a ranged build afterwards.33 He calls the 1 HP Dharok bomb build "a disgusting build", saying he could not beat Dharok in the tunnels so he joined him.34
On 1 December 2024 he switched his final region to Tirannwn (the Elf lands), having seen how horrible the Echo Cerberus fight was and not wanting to be stuck somewhere with a bad boss. This reversed the plan stated in his guide to take Asgarnia for the special attack relic.2935 His next goal was the Last Stand relic and a 1000+ damage Dharok bomb hit on Echo Sol, despite having called Last Stand a non-pick before launch.2835
By 9 December he did the Leagues Inferno on the range machine build right before tier 6 Mastery, thinking the build gets stale once everything can be one-shot, and advised anyone scared of Inferno, even in Leagues, to just do it because it is easy with no downside.3636 After a 1000+ hit with Dragon hunter lance he returned to the Hardcore Ironman he had been AFKing on the side.36 He thinks the ranged build is enjoyable up until tier six and expects it to be stupid at tier six.37
On 20 December he said he was done with Leagues. Not having unlocked his final combat mastery hurt his 1000 invocation attempt.66 He suggested the melee relic would be strong on the Warden's core but not on phase 2.38 A chat suggestion to make an account built around total 1000 invocation raids with no combat mastery did not appeal to him, as it would mostly be banker's note plus redemption-style tricks.39
