Methods

  • Switching is quickly changing gear, typically during weapon cooldown; an eight-way switch swaps the weapon and every other gear slot.1
  • Most inventory management is used in raids (Chambers and Theatre of Blood); other places to learn switching are safe and easy bosses like Kalphite Queen, Dagannoth Kings and Barrows to an extent, which have huge downtime for switching.2
  • Bosses requiring quick switches are Zulrah, Grotesque Guardians, Nightmare and melee Nex; Gnomonkey says Zulrah is a safer introduction to quick switching, while Nightmare and Nex are harder but will not kill you for slow switches.3
  • The Gauntlet teaches other aspects of inventory management: it needs no real switches but requires careful tracking of food and prayer and where they are in the inventory.4

Stats and numbers

  • The fastest an eight-way switch can typically be done is three ticks for the entire switch, sometimes two ticks; Gnomonkey has seen a one-tick eight-way but says very few people can do it.1

  • Inventory management also includes keeping track of food, prayer and special attacks, both the meter and the items.1
  • Gnomonkey highly recommends laying out switches in a horizontal or vertical 2x2 pattern and zigzagging the mouse to equip them, which makes switches faster and more accurate.2
  • In Chambers, Muttadile, Vanguards, Vasa and Olm all need decent switches, with the 4-0 Olm method arguably the most demanding switches in the game; in Theatre of Blood switching is reactionary and depends on role, such as mages at Maiden and the melee role hybriding to magic at Nylocas.4
  • Raids also require careful supply management, even dropping potions in good locations so you can equip or unequip items; Gnomonkey calls Inferno the definition of supply management, though gear switches are not used there.5
