Jal-MejRah (the bats) are monsters of the Inferno that spawn from the very first wave1. Gnomonkey treats them as the highest kill priority whenever they are on the player: they hit hard, drain stats and run energy, and he has seen people die to a couple of bats78. His advice has been the same since 2021: do not tank bats, kill them first9102.

Combat stats

  • Max hit 19 with ranged attacks, which can be devastating if two are tanked at once125. Two bats hurt a lot and push things around and stack things up. He took about forty damage from two bats while praying Rigor11.
  • Bats attack every three game ticks, the fastest attacking mob in the Inferno5.
  • Bats have a short range of four tiles, whereas the blowpipe has a maximum range of five3212. They and the nibblers are the only Inferno monsters with short range3.
  • Bats cannot melee, while blobs can134.
  • Bats have negative 20 mage defence6.

Drains

Every hit drains run energy by three, including zero hits, and it happens even while praying32. A hit off prayer also has a chance to drain a combat stat by one, which the bat adds to its own stat35. Being drained below 94 Magic removes the player's autocast314.

As of a Jagex patch (noted in 2021), bats can no longer drain stats if the player prays ranged correctly, but they still drain run energy15. Gnomonkey therefore prays ranged at the start of waves where bats spawn12. Bats also heal off the player and boost their own stats when they hit, so a shot that would kill them can let them heal and survive16.

Safe spot and tactics

  • Safe spot. A tile where the bats cannot reach the player but a blowpipe can, since bats have four-tile range and the blowpipe five1718. One such tile is one tile away from the corner of the pillar, which lets the player shoot bats even on rapid without being attacked9. The player can avoid an attack by stepping one corner out from the pillar to just outside range19. The same tile doubles as a melee corner trap tile when a melee is about to dig20. Killing bats from the safe spot stops them draining run21.
  • Priority. When several monsters are on the player, always kill the bats first1025.
  • Special attacks. A great time to use special attacks is on bats22. He double pipe-specs them to kill them instantly, saying the blowpipe spec is the "kill button" rather than the "heal button"23.
  • Rigor. Anytime two bats must be killed, he usually puts on Rigor, since it gives defence24.
  • Healing. The best targets for phantom heals are bats, blobs, bloblets and later rangers25. Bats are decent monsters to heal off, and good health can be gained from them with blood barrage626.
