Jal-ImKot, the Inferno melee monster, spawns after wave 9.1 It hits for up to 49 but has very low accuracy.83 Gnomonkey considers it, together with blobs, the main killer of players: in 2024 he called it probably the second bane of the first cape, and in 2025 said that melees in combination with blobs kill the most people because players panic and tank hits.69102 Once the corner traps and safe spots are learned, he says, melees become irrelevant.9

Attributes

  • Spawn: after wave 9, flipped from the Fight Caves, where rangers come third.1
  • Damage: melee only, max hit 49.111
  • Accuracy: extremely accurate in 2021, when he said they cannot realistically be tanked.1 From 2022 he says the opposite: very low accuracy, so they almost never hit, and he advises against tanking them on purpose.8 By 2024 he gives about 25% accuracy because of a very low attack level, so they can be tanked in a pinch while killing them.3 Figures vary: about 30% when a blob is also on the player, where a tank has never hit lower than 46 (2024), and about 30% in 2025; about 25% with a shield in the 2026 setup.4512 Typically they hit zero.212
  • Health: pretty low, so they can be killed with the melee killer ring and blowpipe specs.13
  • Magic level: fairly high, so splash chances are high; this makes them hard to freeze or heal off.141516

The dig

If a melee has not attacked for about 50 game ticks it digs to the player's current location.171819620721 The player must have prayer up, because after digging the melee has a long delay before attacking: he believed this to be eight ticks in 2022 and 2024, and about five seconds in 2026.2262324 The dig defeats ordinary safe spotting.20

  • Reset by tanking: a melee hit resets the timer to a full 50 ticks (or praying melee and tanking one hit). He later describes this as a pinch option that buys time under time pressure.17251126272829 A splash delays its attack by two ticks.27 In 2022 he said a tanked hit stops digging for the next 15 ticks (with "I think"); later videos describe a full reset.18
  • No digging while engaged: a melee cannot dig while it is on the player or attacking, so off-ticking a melee is a great idea, and one cannot dig while a mage is being shot off-ticked.30831
  • Frozen melees can dig.32

Safe spotting and corner traps

A monster's pathing "brain" is its southwest tile, which can be shown with the NPC Indicators plugin. It is the only part that tries to reach the player, so a melee cannot attack when that tile cannot get a straight line, and tiles behind a pillar are safe even a few tiles out (up to three tiles on both sides of a pillar).333435363738

A corner trap works because monsters move east or west before north or south: a melee trying to go east into a pillar will not move north or south and gets stuck.39404142 It works from any side of the pillar, even from the bat safe spot, and on every monster type, not only melees.434441 Things hit only once the player fully rounds the corner, so the player can rotate round the pillar and pray as they go.32 A melee dragged to a corner can still be hit with the Bofa, since it cannot see the player.45 Double melee waves are easy, because both dig at the same time and both can be corner trapped.46 If a melee digs onto the player's tile, click around the pillar first and then down to the corner trap, since it can wiggle free if the player runs straight through it.47

Strategy

  • Priority: kill the mage first and the melee second, since the melee is the time constraint.48 By 2025 he says to kill the melee first when possible, because a wave is not solved while a melee can still dig, and it is also hard to heal off.162149
  • Melee alone is not very threatening, but combined with blobs or other dangerous monsters it can kill. A melee and blob cannot be flicked realistically, so safe spot the melee away from blobs; corner traps are possible on any corner north or south of the north pillar.1750
  • On first reaching a melee, keep it alive and experiment to see how it can be safe spotted.51 Learn corner traps and safe spots early so they do not have to be learned under time pressure.52
  • Corner trap as a default start-of-wave move: cast, go to the pillar corner and trap whatever is there.53 Corner trapping after a dig is something used all the time, and some pillar positions let the player trap the melee and kill the mage first.4354
  • Always have a plan for a dig, usually moving to a corner-trap tile; from the bat safe spot or further up, any of those tiles work.55
  • When a melee digs, turn and shoot it with blowpipe specs rather than panic.56 Blowpipe specs are recommended in a bad spot, as they heal and are more accurate.57 Just shooting works surprisingly often, and he wears the Lightbearer so more specs are available.58
  • Rule of thumb: if a melee is on the player, kill it; killing melees puts a player ahead of 80% of players, since many sit and full-tank them.59
  • Because of the long delay after a dig, the player can stand in melee range and then step to the corner-trap position.60 When under a melee, do not click anything; wait or it will kill the player.61
  • A dead monster can still get an extra attack off.62
  • Do not freeze melees (or stand under them): it is risky and inconsistent, takes about three casts on average, and a splash is likely. Spam blowpipe specs instead.631464 Do not ice barrage them either, because the player's mage accuracy against them is very low.65
  • Running around praying randomly will get the player killed; tank a mage hit rather than all of a melee's hits, but reposition to safety if possible.66
  • A rare solve on wave 64 involves going behind the digging melee; it came up twice in one run.67
  • Melees can be safe spotted on the side of the pillar many players never use.68
